00:00 "Your tactics, they're not gonna work on me."
00:03 "You came here for the truth.
00:05 Here it is."
00:06 Welcome to Ms. Mojo, and today we're counting down our picks for the most pearl-clutching
00:10 reveals in movies released since the year 2000.
00:14 That means, sorry Sixth Sense, you just missed the cut.
00:18 And obviously there will be major spoilers ahead.
00:21 "I think I can go now."
00:25 Number 10.
00:26 The truth about Harlan's death.
00:29 Check this out.
00:30 It starts with all the trappings of the classic whodunit.
00:33 The old gloomy country house, the rich victim, the unscrupulous, money-grubbing suspects.
00:39 Then things take a turn at the half-hour mark when it's revealed the victim, Harlan Thrombey,
00:45 wasn't murdered.
00:46 After his nurse Marta accidentally gave him what was thought to be a lethal dose of morphine,
00:51 he quickly put together a convoluted plot to protect her.
00:54 "He's not here, Harlan.
00:56 I don't know why he's not here.
00:59 He took his own life, staging it to look way more complicated, and exonerating Marta.
01:04 "And everything will be just fine."
01:07 "No, no."
01:08 "I promise."
01:11 The story takes several insane turns from there, but it's the movie's biggest signal
01:15 that it's doing something very, very different.
01:19 Number 9.
01:20 The real ghosts, the Others.
01:22 A war widow, Grace and her light-sensitive children become convinced their house is invaded
01:27 by undead spirits.
01:29 That's the traditional storyline, isn't it?
01:31 Family in a creepy remote house, dark corridors, unexplained events.
01:36 Surely it's ghosts.
01:37 "What have you done with my daughter?"
01:38 "Are you mad?
01:39 I am your daughter."
01:40 "You're not my daughter!"
01:47 Well it is, but in the end, it turns out the invading spirits are the living.
01:51 Grace and her children are actually the ghosts.
01:54 After being overwhelmed by grief, she did something horrendously unforgivable, and later
01:59 awoke thinking it had all been a dream.
02:02 This one has really satisfying payoff if you pay attention to all the little foreshadowing
02:07 moments.
02:08 "She didn't kill us!"
02:09 "Children, if you're dead, why do you remain in this house?"
02:14 Number 8.
02:15 The past is actually the future.
02:17 Arrival.
02:18 When her young daughter dies in the first scene, we watch the movie through the lens
02:22 of Louise Banks' grief.
02:24 However, when she learns the true nature of the visiting extraterrestrial's language,
02:29 all becomes achingly clear.
02:31 "I know what it is."
02:33 "What?"
02:34 "It's not a weapon, it's a gift."
02:36 Exposure to the alien language creates a disconnect in the way Louise experiences time.
02:42 Some of her memories are actually of future events, including the death of her daughter.
02:47 The trajectory of Louise's life is mapped out, and she has the ability to see it and
02:51 anticipate all its joys and pain.
02:54 Even with this foresight, the ending gives us the impression that she'll let things
02:58 play out the way they were meant to.
03:01 "Yes.
03:03 Yeah."
03:04 Number 7.
03:07 Woo Jin's payback.
03:09 Old boy.
03:10 This turning narrative, adapted from a manga, hit us with several gut punches.
03:15 After being locked in a private prison for 15 years without explanation, Oh Dae-su is
03:20 told by his captor, Woo Jin, that he has five days to figure out why he was locked up.
03:25 "I'll give you a score.
03:27 The deadline is July 5th."
03:30 "Oh, you're still writing."
03:34 As it turns out, Dae-su found out something about Woo Jin he probably would have been
03:38 better off not knowing.
03:40 Woo Jin gets his revenge on Dae-su by manipulating events in order to make him fall in love with
03:45 a woman who would turn out to be his own daughter.
03:57 The revenge is thematic in nature and probably one of the most dastardly plans in movie history.
04:04 Number 6.
04:05 Billy's death.
04:06 The Departed.
04:07 The entire narrative of this 2006 crime thriller works because we're rooting for Billy Costigan,
04:13 the South Boston tough guy who had to become a bad guy to be a good guy.
04:17 As a mole in crime lord Frank Costello's organization, he susses out Costello's own
04:22 mole in the police department, Colin Sullivan, and is about to bring him to justice.
04:27 "Some sense into you.
04:29 Alright, just act professional.
04:30 I can get you your money.
04:32 Just act professional."
04:33 "What'd you say?"
04:34 "I can get you your money."
04:35 Just when you think Costigan's gotten away with it, bam, another crooked cop shoots
04:40 him to death.
04:41 The good guys do eventually win, with Costigan's colleague taking his revenge in the movie's
04:45 very last scene.
04:47 "Okay."
04:48 It doesn't make the moment any less impactful though.
04:55 Number 5.
04:56 Leonard's identity.
04:58 Memento.
04:59 This is a story told in reverse order about a man avenging his wife's violent death.
05:04 The film consists of several black and white sequences, as well as some in color, which
05:09 adds a whole other layer of confusion and mystery.
05:13 In the end, Leonard is revealed to have already avenged his wife's attacker.
05:18 His contact, Teddy, is an officer who's been exploiting his condition.
05:22 Pointing him in the direction of targets Teddy feels are worthy of some extrajudicial punishment.
05:28 Not only that, but we're also confronted with the realization that Leonard is responsible
05:32 for his wife's death.
05:33 "Your wife surviving the assault.
05:36 I do not believe in your condition.
05:38 The torment and pain and anguish tearing her up inside."
05:42 Suddenly, everything we've just seen clicks into place.
05:47 "You're gonna pay for what you did.
05:51 Beg forgiveness, and then you pay."
05:54 Number 4.
05:55 Amy is alive and mad.
05:57 Gone Girl.
05:58 What starts as a mystery thriller about a man having to prove his innocence in his wife's
06:02 disappearance takes a nasty and delicious turn halfway through.
06:07 Based on the bestseller by Gillian Flynn, Gone Girl is notable for the revelation at
06:11 the midway point.
06:12 Cool and sociopathic Amy Dunn reveals that she has faked her disappearance to teach her
06:17 adulterous and inattentive husband a lesson.
06:20 "And my lazy, lying, cheating, oblivious husband will go to prison for my murder."
06:26 Not only that, but she's made a little game out of it that only he can play.
06:31 The monologue where she lets us in on her secrets is a burn burner of rage, cultural
06:36 commentary, and sheer wicked fun at her husband's expense.
06:40 "Grown-ups work for things.
06:44 Grown-ups pay.
06:47 Grown-ups suffer consequences."
06:50 Number 3.
06:51 The Snap.
06:52 Avengers Infinity War.
06:54 Generally in a superhero movie, we know how important it is to stop the supervillain's
06:58 evil plans from coming to fruition.
07:01 There wouldn't be a movie if there weren't high stakes.
07:03 What would it mean if they failed?
07:05 Few superhero movies ever really went there.
07:10 "One to go."
07:15 The third Avengers movie, however, definitely went there.
07:19 Having completed the Infinity Gauntlet, Thanos snaps his fingers, and many of our beloved
07:24 heroes across the Marvel Cinematic Universe turn to dust before our eyes.
07:28 "Up.
07:29 This is no place to die."
07:34 T'Challa, Wanda Maximoff, and even Nick Fury are just some of the victims.
07:40 Worse still is Peter Parker, who at just 16, falls apart in his mentor Tony Stark's arms.
07:47 "Please, please, I don't want to go.
07:51 I don't want to go."
07:54 Even as it's happening, you still can't quite believe it.
07:58 Number 2.
07:59 The Sunken Place - Get Out
08:01 You go into Jordan Peele's masterful suburban horror knowing something is not quite right
08:06 with Rose and her parents, Missy and Dean.
08:09 Our first real glimpse into the evil is The Sunken Place, the dark void where Missy sends
08:13 Chris during an intense hypnotherapy session.
08:16 "Sink into the floor.
08:19 Sink."
08:20 "Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait."
08:27 Here he experiences the existential horror of being trapped in his own body and unable
08:32 to control it.
08:34 It's completely harrowing, for Chris and for us, and that it happens so early in the
08:39 story really sets the stage for just how wild this ride is going to get.
08:43 "You live in the sunken place."
08:46 "Now you're in the sunken place."
08:52 Before we unveil our top pick, here are a few honorable mentions.
08:56 The Housekeeper's Husband - Parasite
08:59 The housekeeper reveals the secret she's hiding in the basement.
09:13 Teddy is a patient - Shutter Island
09:16 A US Marshal's entire investigation is revealed to be an elaborate treatment plan.
09:21 "You've been here for two years, a patient of this institution."
09:25 "After everything I've seen here, Doctor, you really think you're going to convince
09:34 me I'm crazy, huh?"
09:35 The Bride's Daughter - Kill Bill, Volume 1
09:38 Bill reveals the vengeful protagonist's presumed dead daughter is still alive.
09:43 "One more thing, Sophie.
09:47 Is she aware her daughter is still alive?"
09:50 The Button - Drag Me to Hell
09:53 Just when Christine thinks she's safe, the curse returns with a vengeance.

10:24 Minutes from Rescue - The Mist
10:26 Bloodthirsty tentacled monsters shrouded in an otherworldly mist have swarmed the world.
10:32 As David, his 8-year-old son, and a group of survivors escape a besieged supermarket,
10:38 destruction rains down around them.
10:40 With only a few bullets left in a revolver, rather than face a painful death, they decide
10:45 to take their lives.
10:47 The burden falls on David to do the deed, and he mercy kills everyone, including his
10:52 son.
10:53 "We gave it a good shot.
10:54 Nobody can say we didn't."
10:57 Then in a cruel twist of fate and irony, the mist parts.
11:01 The military is on the scene, beating back the monsters.
11:04 The group was only minutes from rescue when they took their lives, and we were left gripping
11:09 our armrests in complete disbelief that the movie actually went there.
11:21 Which of these reveals had you questioning everything?
11:24 Let us know in the comments.
11:25 "Don't speak to them!"
11:26 "Why?"
11:27 "They're dead!"
11:28 Do you agree with our picks?
