Ahead of Super Bowl 58, where a repeat of the 2020 final will take place in Nevada, we sat down with Phoebe Schecter, Britains first female NFL coach and now NFL presenter on Sky Sports, for a beginners guide on one of the most anticipated sporting events on the planet.
Transcript
00:00 Super Bowl 58 will determine the champions of the National Football League for the 2023 season.
00:08 A rematch of the 2020 final will take place between San Francisco 49ers and defending Super Bowl champions, Kansas City Chiefs.
00:17 So for those new to the sport, here's a small guide on what to look out for to maximize your understanding of the climax to another NFL season.
00:26 Just how many players are on a team and how many points are awarded throughout the games for different plays?
00:33 In the NFL, you have 53 man rosters. So the reason you have so many people on a team is because unlike rugby or football,
00:42 you have a specific set of group for offense, a specific group for defense, a specific group for special teams.
00:49 And then you've got coaches that go along with that as well. So you'll have around 16 coaches per team.
00:54 So it's a lot of people that are flying together. And then what happens is, in essence, you have four attempts to move the ball 10 yards.
01:03 And if you don't get that fourth attempt, then you punt the ball away to the other team and they try and get the best field position as well.
01:11 And obviously the Super Bowl is upon us again. How do how the two teams that play in that Super Bowl sort of final decided?
01:20 Yeah. So the Super Bowl essentially is our finale of the season.
01:24 So we've 32 teams and they're split into two conferences, the AFC and the NFC.
01:30 And throughout the year, they're competing in 18 regular season games.
01:34 And then you get to the playoffs and then you build up to getting to where we are now, the Super Bowl,
01:39 where the Kansas City Chiefs have won the AFC and the 49ers, San Francisco 49ers, have won the NFC.
01:46 The winner, the winners on the night, what do they actually get awarded?
01:50 I've seen pictures of the incredible trophy. It looks absolutely massive.
01:55 But I was actually watching an episode of Storage Hunters and they found some NFL sort of rings. Is that correct in saying that?
02:03 So this is Super Bowl 58. So only 58 teams will have ever won a Super Bowl.
02:10 You get a you get the big trophy, which is a Vince Lombardi trophy, which is what looks like there's a football on top.
02:17 And that's I mean, that's an incredible honor. Then each team can design their own rings.
02:22 But what I love about the NFL is it's not just the players and the coaches that are on the field that get these rings. Right.
02:29 It's the entire organization, because there's a real belief in it takes all of us.
02:35 So whether you're talking about your community team, your marketing team, ticketing,
02:41 you are part of what's helped to get your team to the Super Bowl and win. So I really love that aspect of it.
02:48 Well, a firm breakdown of this monstrous event and as fans across the world are gearing up for Super Bowl Sunday,
02:56 whether it be for the commercials, the actual game or the halftime show, it's guaranteed to be a good one.
