00:07 Hi, I am Tara DeMarco, and I am the visual effects supervisor
00:11 for Marvel Studios' "The Marvels."
00:13 Today, we are going to be looking at the powers
00:16 of our three leading ladies.
00:17 [MUSIC PLAYING]
00:21 Carol, Monica, and Kamala all have light-based powers.
00:26 In this film, it is so important to get
00:29 the look of these powers right, because the characters
00:32 are entangled.
00:32 [MUSIC PLAYING]
00:36 What the--
00:37 Where's our daughter?
00:38 Yes, where is Kamala?
00:39 Who's Kamala?
00:40 [SCREAMING]
00:40 Oh, my god, oh, my god, oh, my god.
00:43 Is this an Avengers test?
00:44 In our film, "The Marvels," we allow
00:47 Kamala to push the boundaries of the powers
00:50 she unlocked in her show.
00:51 She creates slides, shields, and orbs.
00:55 Kamala's hard light is interesting in that it
00:59 is trapped light, but we don't want
01:01 it to seem self-illuminated.
01:03 It isn't designed to be super glowy or stretchy.
01:08 So we try really hard to keep it faceted
01:11 and to look a little bit like crystal
01:13 and a little bit like light.
01:16 In visual effects, we always want something
01:18 real for the actors to have, both so that they feel
01:22 that they are doing the action and also
01:24 so that there is something for us to track to later.
01:26 Occasionally, we would bring in plexiglass discs
01:30 for her to jump on.
01:31 She also had a big plexiglass platform
01:34 that she fell on for the falling swap
01:36 sequence above Jersey City.
01:38 I can't.
01:40 Can you--
01:40 I got it.
01:42 In "WandaVision," when Monica walked through Wanda's hex,
01:47 she discovered that she could see,
01:50 kind of like a spectrometer, she could
01:51 see all the different wavelengths
01:53 and could tune her vision to see powers or electricity
01:56 or sound waves or all different things.
01:59 Monica, as she grows through the marvels,
02:03 discovers that she has more and more powers.
02:06 She learns how to fly.
02:08 We see her build up and blast.
02:11 We see her invisible.
02:13 We see a few forms of her intangible.
02:17 Monica's intangible design in this film
02:20 sometimes looks green and sometimes looks blue
02:23 and sometimes it looks like all of the colors,
02:25 in the same way that her spectrum vision can
02:29 see all different colors of the electromagnetic spectrum.
02:33 But we also wanted to preserve all of the amazing performances
02:36 of Tiana.
02:37 So Monica, when she is intangible,
02:39 is still partially visible.
02:42 We did not want to turn her into an invisible person.
02:45 In the finale of the marvels, Monica really levels up.
02:50 She is blasted with all of the power of Carol
02:53 and all of the power of Kamala's bangles
02:56 and can absorb that energy and hold it so that she can help
03:01 close the tear in space time.
03:03 This was a huge power change for Monica.
03:05 And I think it best resembles how far she comes in the film.
03:09 Carol Danvers, prodigal child of the Milky Way.
03:13 Carol, a.k.a.
03:14 Captain Marvel, has her light-based power
03:17 based on the jet engine of an Air Force fighter plane.
03:22 We wanted Carol to be familiar to the audience in every way.
03:27 She has her photon fist, her binary effect.
03:32 And in this film, we wanted her to grow hotter than ever
03:36 before, because in the finale of our film, she restarts a sun.
03:40 [MUSIC PLAYING]
03:43 Carol's binary effect is made of a few different layers
03:46 that we can dial up or down based on what
03:49 she's doing in the scene.
03:51 We never want the binary to be distracting
03:53 from the performance.
03:55 So we have elements that go in front of her and behind her.
03:58 And depending on the nature of the shot,
04:01 we'll increase the visibility of what's on top of her
04:04 or what's behind her.
04:06 The interesting thing about working
04:07 on a film with three heroes is that often the design
04:11 will leapfrog, a breakthrough in the look of the design
04:15 of a powerful one character might lead the studio
04:19 and the filmmakers to look at another character and say,
04:21 hey, that person could use it too.
04:23 There is a subtle flaring that we took reference
04:27 from the Aurora Borealis.
04:29 This was established in the first Captain Marvel film
04:32 with her binary effect.
04:34 And we have a hint of that effect in Monica
04:37 and Kamala's powers as well.
04:40 We're a team.
04:41 No, no, no, no, we're not a team.
04:42 We're not a team.
04:43 The Marvels was such an exciting project to work on.
04:47 We have three lady heroes, a lady villain, a Nick Fury,
04:52 and an incredible female directing and producing team.
04:57 It was truly an honor to work with this group.
