00:00 [BLANK_AUDIO]
00:10 All right, everybody, we've got Coach Payne here.
00:36 I'll let him open us up and then we'll take questions.
00:38 Again, if you have a question, please use the raise hand tool and
00:41 we'll get started.
00:43 Coach, when you're ready.
00:44 >> First of all, I thought hats off to Syracuse.
00:48 They played hard, did a lot of good things well.
00:52 They attacked us, got the ball in the paint.
00:55 One guy made up for the three point shooting.
00:59 He had eight, Bell did.
01:03 But overall, I thought we played hard enough and well enough to win.
01:09 Made some mental errors at critical junctures.
01:12 But I'm proud of the guys for their fight.
01:16 A lot of guys played very well.
01:18 Trey White, Brandon for stretches played well, Sky played pretty well.
01:23 So I would love to have walked out of here with a win knowing that that team was
01:30 10 and one at home, but we fell a little short.
01:34 Questions?
01:35 [BLANK_AUDIO]
01:42 >> Not seeing the raise hand tool.
01:44 [BLANK_AUDIO]
01:46 Michael McCammon, go ahead.
01:48 >> Hey Kenny, it's another game where it's kind of the first one almost to 100 wins.
01:55 What's it gonna take or how do you get across the need to really clamp down
02:01 consistently defense to this group?
02:03 >> Well, we keep working on it.
02:06 We keep drilling on it.
02:08 We keep telling them the importance of defending.
02:11 We can't stop doing it.
02:14 We have to emphasize it.
02:15 We have to discipline guys when, or groups of guys when we're practicing and
02:19 they don't do what they're supposed to do.
02:22 Or don't fight through a possession or open up and give a guy a driving lane
02:26 toward the basket, which we work on every day.
02:29 But when you break it all down, it comes down to,
02:34 we have to be great as a group defensively.
02:39 We know we're gonna break down somewhere.
02:41 Well, somebody has to cover for us.
02:44 For example, the last three bell got, we're playing ball screens two on two.
02:50 There's no reason that we should leave the guy that got seven threes.
02:55 But we have to make sure that we do a better job of communicating and
03:00 fighting through the things that we have to do to win games.
03:03 >> Brooks Holden, go ahead.
03:05 >> Hey, Kenny, you talked about just having last game of the team
03:13 needing to show better poise down the stretch.
03:17 I'm wondering how would you grade that today?
03:19 Sky made a big shot there to tie it, but then also just giving
03:24 up a super easy chance at the rim right after.
03:27 Just how would you grade that, knowing that you had a six point lead and
03:31 heading into the final five minutes and change?
03:33 >> Well, I thought we did some good things, but
03:36 I also thought that we made some mistakes.
03:40 I thought that on the three that Sky made, I hadn't seen it fully on tape yet.
03:44 But we come down and we celebrate instead of sprinting back and getting a stop.
03:52 We have to make sure that everything that we're doing down the stretch of games
03:58 are tight, Brooks, and that's just the reality of it.
04:01 We played good enough to win, there was progress made from last game to this game.
04:08 As far as down the stretch, not looking and playing to lose,
04:12 just was more of a situation where we were playing to win.
04:15 And we made big plays, we got big offensive rebounds.
04:19 That's how we gotta play, but we have to be smarter.
04:22 We gotta make sure we're not fouling shooters.
04:25 We gotta make sure if we're scoring four or five, six times around the basket,
04:30 that we just don't take the ball stand on the perimeter three pointer.
04:35 Our three pointers come from penetration and kickouts, not the other way around.
04:40 >> Ken Spencer, go ahead.
04:41 >> Kenny, did you get an explanation on the goal tend at the end of the game from
04:48 the officials?
04:49 What did they tell you?
04:50 >> They said it was definitely a goal ten, they looked at it two or three times.
04:56 I have to see it on film.
04:58 All the guys, all the staff guys looked at it and said it was not.
05:04 But look, I don't expect to get breaks.
05:10 I expect us to make our breaks.
05:12 And if I'm fortunate, if it was not a goal ten, but we still did it.
05:19 There was enough plays within that game that we still should have came out of here
05:23 with a victory.
05:23 [BLANK_AUDIO]
05:26 >> Any more questions?
05:27 [BLANK_AUDIO]
05:31 Yeah, Brooks.
05:31 >> Yeah, this one was played at a super crazy pace.
05:36 Syracuse, I'm trying to pull up the fast break stats now.
05:41 33 to 6 in the fast break.
05:43 I'm just wondering, what kind of strides there can you make to try to keep that
05:47 from happening again?
05:48 And are there things that you saw that you can fix quickly just based off that
05:53 performance?
05:54 >> Well, first thing is that we can have turnovers.
05:58 So some of those baskets or points off turnovers,
06:02 33 points off fast break points or some of that is we turn the ball over,
06:08 they go down and lay it up, lie ball turnovers kill us.
06:10 We're not a team that can afford to do that.
06:14 So that's first taking care of the ball.
06:17 Second is we have to, we attack the lane so much, we gotta have floor balance.
06:23 And what I mean by that, if Sky's driving,
06:25 then the two or the three have to rotate back.
06:28 But a part of us having success is we're very good rebounding the ball.
06:34 So we had 14 offensive rebounds.
06:37 I don't wanna give that up.
06:39 But I also want us to have floor balance to get back in transition and
06:42 talk to each other so that we're not scoring and
06:45 then giving up layups or something like that.
06:48 >> Anything else for coach?
06:52 [BLANK_AUDIO]
06:56 All right, thank you all.
06:57 >> Thank you.
06:59 [BLANK_AUDIO]
