Storm chaser Dr. Reed Timmer was at the shores of Malibu, California, which was already littered with flood debris the morning of Feb. 6. Another flash flood warning is in effect for the area.
Transcript
00:00 Flash flood warnings are in effect this morning again in the Malibu area where
00:04 over a foot of rainfall happened in the Santa Monica Mountains just above town.
00:08 Malibu Creek is again flowing very rapidly and you can see all the flood
00:12 debris deposited on the beach here from a very flooded Malibu Creek over the
00:17 last couple of days. Now the heavy rain is focusing off to the south down near
00:21 the Oceanside area south Los Angeles Metro. New flash flood warnings have been
00:26 issued with a considerable tag down there and you can see that plume, that
00:30 plume of moisture that is coming into Southern California. The Weather
00:33 Prediction Center has a slight risk for excessive rainfall but localized
00:37 significant impacts today as the atmospheric river has weakened, settled a
00:43 little bit further south, but the individual rain echoes are moving a lot
00:46 slower and so there is heavy rain that's persisting for a lot longer and there is
00:50 up to an inch per hour rainfall rates happening within that band into the south
00:54 Los Angeles Metro already today. Day three of this significant atmospheric
00:59 river event. I've already heard of one fatality so far from this event so at
01:05 least that's good is that the people did stay off the roads for the most part as
01:09 this life-threatening flash flooding played out. It happened in the middle of
01:12 the night, the night before last, especially up in the eastern edge of the
01:16 Santa Monica Mountains. That's when a bulk of that rainfall happened but that's
01:20 also the worst timing when those flash floods happen in the middle of the night.
01:23 That's the most dangerous situation here but you can definitely see that the
01:27 heavy rain today is settling off to the south along the south side of the Los
01:31 Angeles Metro today. So certainly do heed those flash flood warnings. There is a
01:36 considerable tag on that one for life-threatening impacts down in the
01:40 south LA Metro. Definitely day three of this atmospheric river event but more
01:45 localized life-threatening impacts.
