00:00 The day I met her was actually the day that this project got greenlit for her.
00:04 She was like, "I actually have the two leads casted already,
00:07 but there's one character that I'm still looking for an actor for."
00:11 And she was like, "Maybe you would like to audition?"
00:14 And I was like, "Um, sure, I'll take a look at the script."
00:17 I'll take a look at the script.
00:18 [laughs]
00:18 Hi, Liza.
00:24 I'm Rachel, and welcome to PEP Exclusives.
00:28 For my first question, I would like to ask,
00:30 how does it feel now that your film will be showing in the Philippines after the long week?
00:38 I'm super excited, and I just feel so blessed that I'm given this opportunity to work with
00:44 a production house that has created movies like "Brokeback Mountain,"
00:47 "Last Night in Soho," "Fifty Shades of Grey."
00:50 To be able to work with a studio this big and have it shown here in the Philippines,
00:55 where my home is, where my people are, you know,
00:58 I feel very honored to be able to share my dreams with them and my excitement with them.
01:03 But of course, with that comes a little bit of nervousness as well,
01:06 because I haven't been on the big screen, at least here in the Philippines, in a while.
01:11 And so, you know, I don't know how people will receive the project,
01:15 but I'm just really hoping that they will all look forward to watching it,
01:19 be excited about it, and when they do, that they'll learn a few things from Lisa Frankenstein,
01:24 but also just feel very happy and excited when they get home after watching it.
01:28 Are you excited for your fans to see that your role for this movie is really big,
01:33 because you're actually, I think, the third from the main cast?
01:38 Yeah, I'm excited. I'm excited about my character and my participation in this film.
01:45 You know, it was such a fun character that I got to play, and it's so different,
01:48 I feel like, from any of the other characters that I've portrayed before.
01:52 But it's still not that unfamiliar from what people are used to seeing me for.
01:56 I feel like my character is still very, like, funny and charming and lovable.
02:02 Even if the film is a genre that people haven't seen me in before,
02:07 I feel like they won't be too thrown off guard by the character itself.
02:13 I did get a lot of screen time with Catherine and Cole, and it's just,
02:17 it's so nakakakilig to be next to such amazing leads like them,
02:22 who have been in the industry for decades already, despite their young age.
02:26 And I learned so much from them and from this project, too.
02:30 So I'm excited for people to see it.
02:31 Okay. What was it like working with Cole Sproud and Catherine?
02:36 They were so fun to work with because they just really love what they do,
02:40 and that's what inspired me the most about them.
02:43 I know that, like, being in the same industry for so many years,
02:47 eventually, like, you get burned out or, you know, you start wanting to do other things.
02:53 But what I saw in them is, like, that they truly love
02:56 and cherish, like, every project that they do and everybody that they get to work with.
03:01 And, like, that really shows in the work that they do.
03:04 And so that resonated with me, too, on a more personal level.
03:09 It made me very appreciative of, like, everything that I've experienced in my career so far.
03:14 And it really helped me to kind of feel more comfortable around them on the set,
03:19 because at the end of the day, acting for them is a job.
03:24 It's not, like, their whole identity.
03:26 And so when they're acting, they just feel like they're having fun.
03:29 And that's what I want to feel like when I do projects.
03:31 I just want to have fun, tell amazing stories,
03:34 and have people enjoy these stories that we show them.
03:39 I think even Cole mentioned that he really enjoyed your character,
03:43 the positivity of Taffy.
03:45 So did you have a lot of bonding moments with him on the set?
03:50 Actually, sadly, I don't have a lot of scenes with Cole.
03:53 I'm not sure if you saw the movie already.
03:55 But we did get to bond a lot, because while Catherine would be filming her solo scenes,
04:01 I would be in my trailer or, like, right on the side of the set,
04:05 because I was also kind of ghosting Zelda Williams, the director,
04:08 while she was filming, because I wanted to learn how to direct as well.
04:12 And so in those, like, in-between scene moments,
04:15 me and Cole would catch up and have really, really good conversations about life,
04:19 about our careers, about acting in general.
04:23 And I wish that I had more scenes with him, actually.
04:27 But I was really happy with the time that I got to spend with both of them.
04:31 And of course, you've mentioned the director and the writer,
04:34 because especially Diablo,
04:37 she was able to create a lot of unique films in the past.
04:41 What did you learn from them during...
04:43 From the directors and writers?
04:44 Director and writers.
04:45 Yes.
04:45 It was such an honor to be able to work on a Diablo Cody project.
04:50 A lot of her projects, like Juno, Jennifer's Body,
04:53 were projects that I grew up watching and kind of changed my perspective on, like,
04:58 films and everything.
04:59 And so when I learned that she was the writer of the script,
05:02 I was like, "I really want to be in this project, because I'm such a fan of hers."
05:07 And also her life story.
05:09 Like, she's such a badass b*tch.
05:12 And with Zelda, she is like the biggest sweetheart ever.
05:17 A lot of people know her as the daughter of Robin Williams,
05:20 so they have like a certain expectation when it comes to meeting her.
05:25 But she's just like the most humble human being I've ever met.
05:30 She is quirky, she's nerdy, she's very artsy.
05:34 And she's just a sweetheart.
05:36 She always remembers to text me, like, every two weeks, I feel like.
05:40 She's always like, "Hey, Lovebug, just checking in. I hope you're doing fine."
05:44 And she's like, "Come back to LA already. I miss you."
05:47 And I heard from my managers that she's out there championing me,
05:51 which I feel really blessed, because she's such a great friend and such an amazing director.
05:56 And what I learned from her is, again, just like Cole, I think,
06:00 is just to have fun with whatever you're doing.
06:04 Don't do anything that doesn't make your heart want to burst from love and joy.
06:09 And I remember you said in a previous interview that it was
06:12 Zelda who really convinced you to audition for this project.
06:16 Yes.
06:17 The day I met her was actually the day that this project got greenlit for her.
06:21 She was like, "I actually have the two leads casted already,
06:24 but there's one character that I'm still looking for an actor for."
06:29 And she was like, "Maybe you would like to audition?"
06:31 And I was like, "Sure, I'll take a look at the script.
06:34 I'll take a look at the script and see if it's something that interests me."
06:37 And she was like, "For sure."
06:39 And then I read the script and I was like, "Oh my gosh, it's everything I've ever wanted in a script."
06:44 I got back to her and I was like, "When can I audition?"
06:46 And she was like, "Well, the auditions haven't started yet."
06:48 And there was a few months in between that and when I did audition.
06:53 So I kind of thought that they had already casted someone for the project.
06:57 And then when I auditioned for it, I sent the videos to her first,
07:00 and I was like, "Is this what they're looking for?"
07:03 And then she was like, "Oh, just a few tips.
07:05 These are the standards in Hollywood when passing an audition.
07:08 So you have to have certain framing.
07:10 You have to do certain things like not looking at the camera, which I did on my first take."
07:14 So she really guided me throughout that whole process.
07:17 And I'm really grateful for her because without her, I wouldn't be here right now.
07:22 What was your honest reaction when you saw the script?
07:25 Because it's very different from what you've done in the past, right?
07:30 My heart was racing the whole time.
07:32 Like I finished the script, I believe, in like less than 30 minutes,
07:35 which is really fast for me because I'm a slow reader
07:38 because I try to like visualize everything in my head.
07:41 And I'll go back like a few pages each time
07:44 if I feel like I'm getting a little lost and I can't see it.
07:46 I got so excited because like I mentioned, it's a mixture of all the genres that I love.
07:51 And it's just like the right combination of quirkiness,
07:57 romance, and horror, and everything that I just couldn't say no to it.
08:01 Like I was instantly drawn to the project.
08:04 Any personal takeaway or anything that you were able to relate with your character in this movie?
08:11 So I actually asked Zelda about that.
08:13 I had a conversation with her before we went into filming.
08:16 And I was like, "What traits do I have that you would say are similar to Taffy's?"
08:20 So that I could kind of draw from that.
08:22 And she said, "Taffy is very earnest.
08:25 Like she's just very genuine and truly deeply cares for everybody that she lets in her circle.
08:32 She's frank because that's something that she gets from her mom.
08:36 And I think that's also the American in me.
08:38 I get it from my mom too.
08:40 I'm very straightforward, very frank.
08:42 Sometimes I don't think about the things I say before I say them.
08:45 But you know, that's just me being me sometimes.
08:47 And just being very genuine and honest about how I feel about certain things.
08:51 But at the end of the day, I have pure good intentions.
08:55 And I think that's how I resonate with Taffy.
08:58 She's just a genuine soul.
09:00 She just loves people.
09:01 She loves to love.
09:03 And I think I'm like that too.
09:05 For my last question, I feel like you really enjoyed doing this film because of the theme.
09:11 And it's from the 80s, the setting.
09:14 So, right?
09:14 It's really different from the usual modern take about love stories.
09:19 Yes.
09:20 Yeah, I got really excited also when I learned that it takes place in the 80s.
09:23 Because I've never had the chance to play a character that takes place in another time period.
09:28 So, I actually did a lot of research beforehand on the 80s.
09:32 Because I wanted to know like what was pop culture like during the 80s?
09:36 How did people sound?
09:37 Like how did English sound during the 80s?
09:39 Because you know how like back in the day, English kind of had like a certain twang or accent to it.
09:44 So, I wanted to study that too.
09:46 But then I also wanted to understand some of the references that Diablo put in the script.
09:51 Because there's some lines where I completely didn't understand what we were talking about.
09:56 And so, I had to ask Diablo Zelda and do my own research so that I could understand and
10:00 actually relate to all of these things.
10:02 All right.
10:02 Thank you so much, Liza.
10:03 I'm so happy and excited for everyone to see this film.
10:06 Can you invite Pepsters to watch the Lisa Fragans night?
10:11 Hey, Pepsters.
10:13 This is Liza Soberano.
10:14 I would like to invite all of you guys to watch Lisa Frankenstein this February 7th
10:19 in theaters nationwide.
