Ten years after its launch, the Porsche Macan is heading into its second model generation, now in all-electric form. Through its progressive, timeless design, characteristic Porsche performance, long-distance range and high everyday practicality, the new Macan 4 and the new Macan Turbo aim to completely fulfil the requirements of Porsche customers choosing an SUV.

The electric motors draw their energy from a lithium-ion battery in the underbody, with a gross capacity of 100 kWh, of which up to 95 kWh can be actively used. The HV battery is a central component of the newly developed Premium Platform Electric (PPE) with 800-volt architecture, used by Porsche for the first time in the new Macan. The DC charging output is up to 270 kW. The battery can be charged from 10 to 80 per cent within approximately 21 minutes at a suitable fast-charging station. At 400-volt charging stations, a high-voltage switch in the battery enables bank charging by effectively splitting the 800-volt battery into two batteries, each with a rated voltage of 400 volts. This enables particularly efficient charging, without an additional HV booster, at up to 135 kW. AC charging at up to 11 kW is possible at household wall boxes.

Up to 240 kW of energy can be recuperated via the electric motors while driving. The Integrated Power Box (IPB) also contributes to the efficiency of the new Macan models, while also saving weight and space. The innovative and compact IPB combines three components – the on-board AC charger, the high-voltage heater and the DC/DC converter. The combined WLTP range is up to 613 km in the Macan 4 and up to 591 km in the Macan Turbo.

00:00 Michael, welcome back.
00:01 Ladies and gentlemen, let's give him a round of applause as he takes us through the ins and the outs.
00:07 And I think the first thing I want to know is, I think it's beautiful, you all agree?
00:12 Stunning. But I want to know as the designer, which is your favorite part, Michael?
00:18 You know, it's always hard to ask a designer what is the favorite part.
00:21 There are some favorite parts, but I would like to refer briefly to the front because
00:27 that was, I think, the most challenging part of the car.
00:33 Why?
00:33 You know, the very successful current Macan has a very strong product identity,
00:40 a very strong Macan identity.
00:42 And then you could say to work on the next generation is in a way business as usual.
00:48 So you have to have this close connection between the predecessor and then the follower.
00:56 But in that case, as well, combined with this change of technology.
01:00 So we wanted as well that we are visualizing that this is an EV.
01:05 And therefore, you could say we in a way borrowed the headlamps of the Taycan,
01:10 very flat, very low, very slim with these four elements and try to close the front much more.
01:18 So I would really say that was the toughest part.
01:22 OK, so subtle, distinctive, something that if you saw it in your rearview mirror,
01:26 you would still pay attention.
01:28 So some of the other design elements then.
01:30 Talk us through some of the other parts.
01:31 For example, on the interior, I mean, no combustion engine, no rev counter.
01:36 So the display, the instrument, curved and free floating, one of my highlights in the interior.
01:44 Or if we have a brief look at this car over there as well, the colors.
01:50 So we try to as well to introduce new colors that are light and complementing,
01:58 let's say, this new technology.
02:00 And it does look stunning from the rear here.
02:02 This is also a very distinctive look and feel.
02:05 Yeah, I mean, for us in Porsche, the proportions are very important.
02:09 So again, today's Macan already has great proportions.
02:13 And looking at the car, especially from the back, I mean, this width to height ratio.
02:20 So the stance of the car, something I think we even improved.
02:25 And again, underlines that this is the sports car in the segment.
02:29 OK, so let's talk a little bit about those design principles that we've touched on.
02:33 I mean, obviously, a few of the key things that we're noting is the tension that we notice on each of these curves.
02:39 But some of the trends, when you talk about automobiles, they come and go.
02:44 Some work really well and some kind of don't.
02:48 But Porsche has managed to hold on to that essence.
02:52 And it's always been very notable.
02:53 But obviously, there is change involved.
02:55 So how do you maintain that?
02:57 I mean, as a designer and as a brand, as a company, you should never be so arrogant not to listen to customers,
03:04 not to look closer at the competition, what's happening.
03:07 But again, I think in the end, you have to keep, you're saying, the essence, the brand identity.
03:13 And therefore, we have a very clear design strategy.
03:17 We were briefly talking about these keywords that always help us whenever we have to take a decision,
03:24 if we go more to the left or to the right, besides these trends, to take, let's say,
03:30 the right decision for the Porsche brand to keep this strong brand identity and product identity of the Macan.
03:37 So obviously, then, when you had to create an all-electric Macan, right,
03:42 you were projecting into the future.
03:44 How do you do that whilst retaining that brand essence?
03:47 Yeah, I mean, we have, let's say, this kind of internal system.
03:51 It's so secret that I can't talk about it.
03:53 But you're going to share something, right?
03:56 It's basically, we always have this idea, this picture in our mind that we throw a stone pretty far into the future,
04:04 very much into the future, knowing that a lot of ideas we are creating in this process
04:09 are not realistic at that point in time, today.
04:13 That's what we call forecasting.
04:15 And from there, we go step by step back.
04:18 We call it backcasting.
04:20 And therefore, then, we believe that we found a pretty good way, again, as I said,
04:24 to keep the thread between the history, the heritage, and find the right amount of innovation.
04:33 And with that, we now have this brand new all-electric Macan.
