00:00 >> Good in the back.
00:02 All right, a little bit of questions for Coach.
00:04 >> [SOUND]
00:07 >> Come on, you mad at me?
00:09 >> Yeah, going back to Tuesday's game,
00:12 as you go back and watch film of that, did you grow more frustrated
00:18 with some of the mistakes you all made in the first half?
00:22 Knowing how close the game was down the stretch, did you go back and
00:26 after watching, just feeling more frustrated just by some of the mistakes
00:29 that were made to lead to such a big hole early?
00:31 >> Great question, I think that when I look back over the game and
00:36 watch the film, I saw careless turnovers.
00:38 Look, the game was close.
00:42 The 12 points going in at halftime was really like six or eight points.
00:46 We were right there up until the last two or three minutes of the half.
00:50 When you look back over it and you see
00:53 throwing a ball across your body versus a defender.
00:58 Dribbling the ball off your foot, a charge.
01:04 Things that you could avoid, unforced,
01:08 undisciplined turnovers, of course you're frustrated.
01:11 But then on the flip side, to face a team and you don't have an eight point guard,
01:17 you got all wings out there and bigs.
01:20 And for them to fight to get back in the game, it showed what they're capable of.
01:26 >> Yeah, just to follow up quickly, I mean, after you watched the film of you guys
01:32 playing, you talked about Mike having to be point guard for times.
01:36 Just how did you like that set and
01:38 just things that were working there versus, I'm obviously, I mean,
01:43 I hope to not have that sort of a lack of depth at point guard.
01:46 I'm moving forward, but just what did you see there that you liked?
01:50 >> I just liked the fact that they fought and they competed.
01:53 There were stretches where we got multiple stops.
01:56 There were stretches where Trey White did a lot of good things.
02:01 He showed what I brought him here to do.
02:04 He showed flashes of it.
02:06 And not just the shooting and the scoring, but
02:10 I love the fact that he had 14 rebounds.
02:13 I love the fact that some of those offensive rebounds he got,
02:17 Brooks, he left from the three point line and when he got them.
02:20 So his will to win and fighting for us to win, he showed.
02:24 I love the fact that Mike James fought through and had to play the point and
02:29 Curtis did some good stuff and Curtis was unbelievable on defense.
02:33 We need that for a full game.
02:35 So there was some encouraging things there, but
02:38 of course there was some disappointing things there as well.
02:40 >> Yeah, just a health update on Sky and Tyler Hersey.
02:47 >> Hersey is still getting consulted.
02:49 Hopefully we'll know something soon.
02:53 Sky is practicing today, Tyler was practicing today, so
02:57 we'll see where they are, probably game time decisions.
02:59 But we hope to have everybody healthy and playing well and
03:05 confident because it's hard out there without a point guard.
03:08 >> And you mentioned the fact that you liked the fight in your team when they got
03:14 down, what's the secret to them to play desperate when the score is much closer?
03:20 >> I don't know that there is a secret.
03:24 I think that they have to go out there and have confidence in what they're doing and
03:29 how they're doing and competing.
03:31 I think they have to understand that they need each other,
03:35 that you can't make careless, casual plays on the court.
03:41 I think that every inch matters.
03:43 If I was to sum it up, Brandon, you can't give an inch.
03:51 That guy moves an inch, you're fighting him for that inch.
03:55 Not a foot, not a yard, an inch.
03:57 If I had a whole team that was fighting their opponent for inches,
04:02 we'd be in a different situation here.
04:04 Regardless of the talent level, regardless of who's better,
04:08 who won the rankings, any of that.
04:10 When you have a group of guys that are fighting together and
04:13 fighting their hearts out, you got a chance to win.
04:16 >> I guess for some of those mistakes and things that you kind of alluded to,
04:22 I don't know, is it game slippage?
04:24 Some of those situations you see where they maybe get a little flustered in those
04:28 moments and it, I guess, takes them a minute to respond.
04:31 >> One, I think we're playing really good teams.
04:33 I think we're playing really good players.
04:35 I think in the general, when you look at the ACC,
04:39 all the teams have gotten better from a year ago.
04:42 And we've gotten better.
04:44 Is that enough?
04:46 You know the answer to that.
04:49 It's not enough.
04:50 We need to fight more.
04:51 But when you talk about good players, it's not easy to go out there and
04:57 play against guys that are really good, that are on the borderline of being
05:00 a NCAA tournament team, that means they're pretty good.
05:06 And we have to understand that and we have to be disciplined.
05:09 We have to play 40 minutes.
05:10 We gotta be connected with each other on offense, but
05:13 also covering for each other and fighting on defense.
05:16 And not having turnovers, that's what happened a year ago.
05:22 If we eliminate that, we give ourselves a chance.
05:25 But if you're not gonna rebound, you're gonna turn the ball over, and
05:30 you're not defending, that's a lot to overcome.
05:33 And so we have to make sure that we handle those three areas.
05:37 >> When you go back and look at the performance by Trey,
05:41 how much of it do you think that he was able to have the ball more in his hands
05:46 and create stuff for himself?
05:47 >> Great question, Rick.
05:51 I think for me, to say it different,
05:54 I thought he went north-south more than he did east-west.
05:59 I thought when Trey White plays within the floor of the game and he catches the ball
06:03 and he attacks right away and he's going toward the basket, he's tough to deal with.
06:07 I think whenever he catches the ball on the perimeter and he dribbles it and
06:11 he's not going anywhere to process what's happening on the court,
06:15 the defenses are gonna say, and then he gets into the crab dribble mode.
06:21 I want him to play north-south.
06:23 I want him to make quick decisions.
06:25 I want him to pass it quick.
06:26 He's one of our best passers.
06:28 I want him to attack defenses.
06:31 I want him to get downhill and go attack and make plays,
06:34 whether that's to score or to get assists.
06:36 And I want him rebounded.
06:38 I don't wanna look at the stat sheet at the end of a game and
06:41 he has two, three rebounds.
06:43 That kid is capable of getting and averaging ten rebounds.
06:46 That's a mindset.
06:48 I have to make sure I stay on him and
06:50 challenge him to make sure that his mindset is where it needs to be to play his best.
06:56 >> I'm gonna stick it with Trey, Kenny.
06:58 It seemed like after he came back from his injury, after he had to sit out,
07:03 he has kind of had an uptick in his play.
07:08 What do you attribute,
07:09 what did he see differently from having to sit out that he's applied?
07:14 >> Well, I can tell you what I hope he saw.
07:17 I hope that he saw how important defense is.
07:21 I hope that he saw that he's one of the leaders on this team.
07:25 I hope that he saw that he has to play in a way where it's not predictable.
07:33 So if you catch the ball and you dribble and you do set up dribbles,
07:36 you're predictable.
07:37 The defense is gonna close the gaps and you're playing teams like Virginia,
07:41 who are very good defensive teams, that if you're playing with the ball and
07:45 you're not going anywhere, they're gonna say, you're not gonna get the shot you want.
07:50 So the ball has to move, you have to move off the ball,
07:52 you have to offensive rebound, you have to post make quick decisions in the post.
07:57 But you also have to be complete in how you get assists as well.
08:01 I hope he saw that.
08:03 He demonstrated that in the last game.
08:06 I wanna see how he follows that up.
08:08 [BLANK_AUDIO]
08:11 >> Yeah, Florida State has already passed its win total from last season,
08:15 both a total and in conference.
08:17 I'm just wondering, what do you see from them in scouting them that speaks to just
08:21 how they've been able to bounce back and just have more success this season?
08:26 >> I think it starts with their defense.
08:28 I think they're energetic.
08:30 Defensively, they get after you, they disrupt the game.
08:33 At times, you won't be able to run offense,
08:35 you have to spray at the floor and attack them.
08:39 They're a good rebounding team.
08:41 They're offensively, they have one guy that can really, really shoot the ball.
08:45 And the rest of the guys can really, really drive the basketball.
08:48 They're scores, and they play well together.
08:51 They're fighting, they play with great energy.
08:53 Coach Hammond's done a great job with this team.
08:56 They're a good team, and we have to make sure that our energy,
09:01 our effort is 1,000% or it's gonna be a long night.
09:06 [BLANK_AUDIO]
09:09 >> Yeah, Trey had that good game.
09:12 He had games, and Brandon's had really good games.
09:15 Mike's had good games, Sky.
09:17 But not enough games where three or four of them have their best games.
09:21 Do you ever think about how to solve the puzzle to get them
09:27 all playing at a high level at once?
09:29 >> Well, I think they have to solve that puzzle.
09:33 For me, I need them, and I tell them this.
09:36 I need three or four of you guys to play well on the same night.
09:40 Doesn't mean you all will score, but I need you to play well.
09:44 I can't have, I ask these guys after every game,
09:47 give me a grade on your game.
09:48 If three of you are giving me Ds and one guy's giving me a B,
09:54 how are we gonna win?
09:55 I need four, five, six, seven guys giving me Bs and As.
10:00 That's how we win.
10:01 Basically, to your question, I need multiple guys playing well on the same night.
10:07 Doesn't necessarily mean scoring.
10:10 Really means defending, sharing the ball, playing the right way.
10:15 >> What kind of grades do they usually give themselves?
10:17 >> Cs and Ds.
10:19 >> What grades do you give them?
10:20 >> I just, when they give me that grade, I'm like, okay, we're on the same page.
10:24 [LAUGH]
10:26 >> Anything else for coach?
10:28 All right.
10:29 >> All right, guys.
10:30 >> Thank you.
