00:00 Am NOT dying to give up pieces of this current team when you are
00:06 First in the NHL and you are a true Stanley Cup contender at this point
00:11 I don't think now is the time and I get it like if let's say, Nebraska Grizzic walk in the offseason
00:16 That stinks, you know, you didn't get anything for them
00:19 But at least you will have gotten a playoff run out of them, you know
00:23 And I think that's the biggest thing at this point that you have to focus on
00:26 *Music*
00:35 And welcome in to poke the bear episode
00:37 199
00:41 One away from 200 which is I think it's safe to say we'll get to 200
00:47 My guess is Ty Anderson will be on the next episode so he can celebrate the 200
00:53 But since Ty's there, it's not me. So we're not going to the we're not going to
00:58 The Kowloon no, no meet-and-greet podcast the Kowloon, unfortunately
01:03 Did you see Sam Houser from the Celtics is doing like some meet-and-greet on
01:07 Valentine's Day at the Kowloon
01:10 What what a more romantic place in the entire Commonwealth of Massachusetts Evan like that's where I would love to go
01:16 Honestly, it's a pretty good idea might might might show up not for Sam Houser just for some saugus wings
01:21 That I mean honestly, it's a beautiful romantic atmosphere there. It's the Venice of the Venice of Massachusetts the Kowloon
01:28 It is I just panicked because I was like, I hope I saw that correctly and I didn't just spread some misinformation
01:34 But I did see it correctly. I went and looked
01:36 Who from the Bruins could you see making a Kowloon meet-and-greet? There's one in mind. I have one in mind
01:42 I was gonna say like I was gonna say like all of them, but yeah, but I have one particularly in mind
01:48 Oh, yeah, who is it? I'm going with Lauco Lauco would would do something at the Kowloon like that big people
01:54 He is he is a complete now that he tweets all the time and he's probably the number one Bruins Twitter follow
01:59 He just skyrocketed to the top of that
02:01 He he's a man of the people you nailed it. Like he's just he's he's for everybody
02:06 So there'd be some Lord of the Rings tie-in at the Kowloon
02:10 Maybe they'd have some people dress up as like Lord of the Rings characters
02:12 Or the maybe that's the only way you can get in you got a dress as a Lord of the Rings character
02:16 Maybe he would be dressed as one too. So that's what I do. Anyway when I go to Kowloon, so
02:20 That's this Lord of the Rings character
02:24 So anyways, that's Connor Ryan, by the way, I'm f maranofsky Connor. What's up?
02:29 Evan I'm doing well. How you doing doing great doing great now. I'm hungry for the Kowloon
02:35 No, no, I want to go and dress up in the Lord of the Rings costume
02:41 But anyway, maybe we'll just discuss that for this whole episode because a little bit of a break here Bruins hockey
02:46 It's like, you know, what what else can we talk about?
02:49 But fortunately we have many topics that you guys we know will know and love
02:54 And we'll start here and then we'll go bigger picture as the episode progresses
02:58 Second half Bruins are 49 games in
03:03 In the second half. What are the top? What is the top storyline? You're gonna want to follow in the second half
03:09 Yeah, I think for me it has to be
03:12 How the birds can keep that their offensive float right because I mean right now enter the holiday break
03:18 I think they were 22nd in the league and goals scored
03:21 Very reliant on you know, the man advantage very reliant on the usual suspects Pasternak
03:26 Marcian coil those those guys but since the holiday break which I think ended on December 27th
03:34 Bruins are pretty much the top offensive team in the whole league and number one in goals scored
03:38 That power play is like skyrocket back up to top five, which is I think the PKs dipped at the same time
03:44 So it's a little bit of a monkey's paw situation there
03:46 but I mean they're tied for first in the league in five on five goals over this stretch and this isn't like a
03:52 Flash in the pan, you know, we're talking about since December 27th
03:57 It's been 17 games and they're scoring, you know, they're averaging close to four and a half goals per game
04:02 So I think that's gonna be the biggest key
04:05 We mentioned this before as to what's you know, the main priority for this team
04:09 I still think it goes back to defensively tightening tightening things up
04:12 but if you're a Bruins team and all sudden you have guys like Frederick and DeBrusque and geeky and you know
04:19 Patra and all these other guys that are all pulling on the rope. Also, you've got a pre
04:24 Stacked lineup where you know, maybe the star power isn't there but you've got three or even four lines of
04:32 Full words out there. They can do a lot of damage in the right situation
04:35 So I think that's something is whether all these different kind of key pieces across the lineup and keep this going on after this
04:42 Extended break after you have few pina coladas get a little Sun. See if it let's see if it carries over, right?
04:48 Agreed and I you know, you look at sort of what they've done in the last month and I think the second and third efforts on
04:54 Goals and kind of getting dirty down low in the zone and winning puck battles and winning net front battles
05:00 And you look at like part of the reason I think this is gonna continue is because of the cast you have doing that
05:06 It's not like these are all skilled guys who are you know, finally getting greasy down low like Frederick geeky
05:12 Ben reams Dyke Lauco
05:15 You know coil these are guy I mean Marcia and a posh not fit into this too
05:19 But you know newer guys who are contributing fit into that role of even DeBrusque
05:25 They are not afraid to get down low and win puck battles and create
05:29 Chances from behind the net from the sides of the net from in front of the net
05:33 I think that's how they've been getting a lot of their goals
05:35 And that's why I think they've sort of struck gold in the sense that they have that so I agree with you
05:40 I think that's a huge storyline to follow in the second half. I'm gonna go back into the Bruins end
05:45 I'm gonna go in net. I am fascinated to see what happens with Jeremy Swain
05:52 Does he what is the the divvying up of?
05:55 Of games in the second half over these last bunch of games who's getting more?
06:01 And does Jeremy Swain and continue to sort of pull away
06:05 And how do they you know?
06:08 How do they make sure Linus Hallmark is fully healthy come the playoffs and also I mean Swain's health is also a thing
06:14 But with all marks, you know thing that happened in Arizona
06:16 How do they manage that so?
06:19 And I also think in terms with Swain and like we've talked about this a lot of last couple weeks when he made those arbitration
06:24 comments
06:26 You know does he continue to raise his value and do they get something done?
06:30 Now like I you know because again his values only going up doesn't really show signs of stopping
06:37 You know I think the value only goes down if he lays an egg in the playoffs
06:40 I think at this point we know he's gonna be getting playoff games right now. I think he'd be the game one starter
06:47 But how does he sort of respond over these next couple weeks and just how many games do they give him?
06:52 I mean do they give him a little bit more do they transition him into playing a lot more to rest?
06:58 Oh mark like I I don't know. I'm fascinated to see that just because they have gone
07:03 You know the last season or two with sort of a you know trying to go every other but that feels like it could maybe
07:10 Break up over the next couple months
07:13 Yeah, be very fascinating see if Jim Montgomery kind of stays with it kids again as we always say it's one thing to
07:18 Do it in November and December in the middle of the regular season
07:23 It's one thing to you know, I think Jim Montgomery said in I think was late November
07:27 Mentioning that they want to keep the goalie rotation going in the playoffs
07:30 Let's see being carried out in practice once we get you know
07:34 February and March and even when the playoffs and we've said like that's going to be the biggest trial
07:40 I think for Montgomery and this team is staying the course there right like I think we see that this team is at its best
07:45 When those two guys are playing off each other when they're both, you know staying fresh. They're both kind of you know
07:51 Getting the best of that internal competition of both wanting the net
07:54 But what happens when one guy hits a little bit of a lull here, you know
07:59 Swimming as a shutout in game one
08:01 You're not gonna go back to him for game two like you stay in with the plan there
08:04 That whole thing is gonna be fascinating because I feel like a strong
08:08 Form to net from ideally both of them unless one of them just goes unconscious is going to be the most important thing for this
08:14 team
08:15 going on a deep run, but
08:17 It's gonna be it's gonna take a lot of conviction from Montgomery to stick with it because again
08:23 That's been their game plan last year. They went away from it and all kind of imploded in on them
08:28 So we'll see what uh what this year brings but even going off of your point to you have enough swayman
08:34 Same thing I think with like a guy like the brusque in terms of like to the Bruins bridge the gap now and start looking
08:39 At contracts warm because again like swayman's one where value seems to only be going up
08:44 Maybe the brusque wants to wait it out now. Maybe the Bruins have seen enough where they want to keep them
08:48 That's another thing worth keeping tabs on is they don't really have a whole lot of free agents this year at least
08:54 Guys that you can project as being part of maybe the next couple of years
08:59 but the brusque is definitely something to keep tabs on as to whether or not the Bruins just
09:04 Kick that down the road for the offseason or whether they want to maybe take care of some business
09:08 Once maybe the trade deadline passes, they got to make sure they're standing on business Connor. That's the biggest thing
09:13 They gotta be stanced up on business
09:15 Like the kids say
09:19 Ben Reams Dykes an interesting one in terms of free agents because you know, he's gonna be going to negotiating table being like
09:25 Gonna need a little more than a million dollars for one year gonna need a teeny bit more than that
09:31 So I think he's gonna be maybe it'll be another two mil
09:34 That'll be like he'll make he'll learn from detective crash more like he's got a quota. This is quote not a quota
09:40 It's his quote two million two mil
09:42 Just no tattoos. No touch. Oh god, no tattoos. So you're not getting any Christmas presents that year just
09:49 Just that year though. Yeah restarts on January 1st. Thankfully. Yeah, all the people who haven't watched
09:56 I think you should leave her like what the fuck are they talking about?
10:00 Anyways before we get to the rest of our conversation a quick word from our friends over at fan duel

10:36 With fan duel an official sports book partner of the NFL
10:40 so on Bruins beat we talked about Elias Lindholm and we kind of shot down the notion of
10:45 They probably shouldn't be going after the big fish in the pond at this deadline
10:50 you don't have a ton of assets you don't want to give up your few assets and
10:55 Kind of want to run it with this group and see what happens
10:58 You've got the goal tending you have the top dogs on D. You have enough offensive contributors to try and see if you can make this
11:06 thing work
11:07 That doesn't mean they won't do anything though in terms of realistic trade targets. I want to emphasize the word
11:13 Realistic because I think that's important to note here. I think a lot of people and I get it
11:18 I said this on Bruins beat I get fans wanting the big fish. I get it
11:24 You want to see your team can you know compete in the arms race?
11:27 But in terms of realistic trade targets, who do you look at and say?
11:31 Be an interesting fit for the Bruins. Yeah, I think for me. I'm just focusing on two areas the lineup
11:37 I'm gonna say like third pairing D whether it's a guy that can slot in there or even like a depth defenseman
11:44 So I think you're looking at guy like Ilya Lubushkin who is obviously
11:48 Over in the west coast now was with Buffalo last year, but isn't flashy, but he's right shot guy
11:56 Physical block shots wins a lot of hits. I don't think you want him in your top four, but
12:02 You know if something happens we get to slot in the guy like Weatherspoon if you have Kevin Chatten Kirk struggling
12:09 Derek forwards a guy who also was limited at the end of last week with I think the same lower body injury
12:16 That's a bit of a concern right like again
12:18 I think you've got really good insurance and a guy like weather's been out there
12:21 but you might have to add another guy to either step into a spot there to cover for a guy like Grizzly Kerr Chatten Kirk or
12:29 Maybe I just have more of a 70 role. So, you know, I got a little bushkin could be a possible target for the Bruins
12:35 Nick sealers a guy for the Flyers again. They're in the playoff mix right now
12:41 So you wonder if they are actually gonna move off some of those pieces the Bruins have killed the flyer. They're out. They're gone
12:47 Over after Saturday's game. Yeah, so maybe he's a guy and not flashy but third third pairing guy
12:52 I think he's kind of more than the top four this year for the Flyers which might elevate his value but six to
12:59 simple game
13:00 I think those are the guys on defense you're looking at as opposed to like a
13:05 Noah Haniff and a Chris Tanne of some of those more flashy names out there
13:09 But those are two guys. I think you keep tabs on defensively and then on the forward group
13:15 I'm looking more like fourth line guys like tone setting type of players
13:19 So like no tie tie and I mentioned Liam O'Brien who Arizona?
13:24 Agoon like that's kind of what he does but
13:28 Agoon. Yes
13:31 Why if you're looking for a guy that can set the tone can you know, maybe doesn't play every game in a playoff
13:38 Series, but can jump in the lineup and make things happen
13:42 He could be a guy worth looking at he sure sounds like a fucking brewing. It sounds like he's from hang them, you know
13:47 Yeah, I think he's from Nova Scotia, I believe but big red
13:50 Yeah, Bruins fans would love a guy like that. But even a guy like Brendan do him
13:55 For the wild which you wonder if that team's gonna start selling again
13:59 lands a lot of hits plays a pretty straight line game on the fourth line like if you're able to even add just maybe a
14:05 more
14:07 established type of player like doing him on that fourth line that even slot in there and kind of set the tone for
14:12 a
14:13 Group there that I say maybe is like more impressionable where you've got a younger player like Lauco, you know
14:18 Beecher's in that mix Boquist is in there now
14:21 But you have a lot of young hungry players that are fighting for those fourth line spots
14:25 If you're able to get a guy like do him almost in the same vein as like what Hathaway was last year
14:31 I think that can go a long way towards setting the tone and building a little bit more of a identity on the checking unit
14:36 So that's kind of what I'd be prioritizing is fourth line and then third pairings spare defense
14:42 Not really, but no I agree
14:44 I saw we are thinking the exact same wavelength on this of these are the kinds of guys you want to acquire
14:50 You're not getting the highly skilled top six winger. You're not getting a top four defenseman who you sign long-term
14:57 I have another name from Minnesota that I'm sure
15:01 People would be very interested in having come here. That's Pat Maroon
15:06 Pat Maroon is an interesting one because he's won a lot of cups big guy
15:11 My guess is he wants to go to a cup contender?
15:14 I know flurry is like the big one with Minnesota if they move him or not because they're out of you know
15:19 As spokesy would know the Minnesota Wild they're out of the picture
15:21 But I do wonder if maroons
15:25 Physicality, I think he's another guy who would not play every night
15:29 That would be kind of matchup based
15:31 But if you need an injection of physicality in a playoff series a voice in the room type of guy
15:36 Um, he's been through
15:38 Various Stanley Cups. He beat you in 2019 with the Blues
15:42 That's an interesting one. And I don't I can't imagine it's gonna take a ton to get him
15:47 I know going into the year. I think the Bruins looked at Luch each is that guy?
15:51 Obviously that has not worked out. So bringing a guy like maroon be an interesting idea. I wouldn't be opposed to it
15:58 I mean again like as long as you're not
16:01 You know if if he's coming in and he's completely limiting the fourth lines role and they you know, they're never out there
16:08 They don't get to do much
16:09 Okay, you know then you got to reevaluate but the physicality into things, you know
16:14 The being a little bit more imposing one of the problems the Bruins have had over the last
16:18 Like five years in the playoffs as they do get thrown around a bit
16:22 He might help with that. So that's maybe a guy that you want to have in there. So maroon would be an interesting one
16:29 Another one would be a local guy Colin Blackwell if you're looking for a little bit more of a you know
16:34 Potential third liner as well as a fourth liner. That's an interesting one. I think teams could be after him
16:40 I wonder if the value again the deadline you're always no one's paying fair price. You're always paying a little bit more
16:46 local guy like to me that seems like an interesting fit of some a depth piece in your in your bottom six who can you
16:54 Know contribute on the score sheet and also, you know play responsible in their own zone
16:58 So I'll go with either of them. I mentioned Henrik on Bruins beat Adam Henrik with the Ducks
17:03 He's a little bit bigger of a fish
17:07 so that's one and then two names on defense I'd give is Justin Schultz with Seattle and
17:13 Marco Scandella with st. Louis both depth pieces scandala might be a little expensive in terms of like his actual contract
17:20 But both can you know Justin Schultz?
17:23 I know was good last year for the Kraken in the playoffs
17:25 And Scandella has played a little bit better this year older guys veteran players who could kind of fit in your on your third pair
17:33 I
17:35 Mean Schultz could potentially play every night like I see other things
17:38 So I don't know you have to clear cap though for a lot of these guys, you know
17:42 That's the other thing is how do you do that? So what do you think of those names any any strong feelings towards them?
17:47 Yeah
17:48 I mean
17:48 I think all of them kind of fit the tone of what we've been kind of saying now is that you maybe have to lower your
17:53 expectations as to getting a big fish or a top six dollar even like a
17:57 You know do Claire or a guy like that, right? That could maybe be a 20 goal score. I just think it's look
18:03 you're looking more at
18:05 depth pieces or guys that just add a little bit more in terms of what you might expect in the playoffs again as you said an
18:11 O'Brien or a
18:14 Guy like Scandella or even
18:17 You mentioned like Pat Maroon. Are those guys going to like augment the entire DNA the team? No
18:23 But like they can surely help you out
18:25 It's like if you're driving through a blizzard or something like that
18:27 Which is like the akin to what the ceiling got playoffs are
18:31 It's like maybe add a little bit like the the chains for the tires
18:34 I mean, that's what Pat Maroon is it gets you over that one little bump
18:37 You need to a little bit of extra heft there. I would say to help you out in that spot
18:41 So I think that's kind of what you're looking at
18:44 it's maybe these things that are viewed as marginal upgrades, but
18:48 they come in handy when you have a critical moment in a game where it's like
18:52 it's almost like you'd rather have a spot where you have a guy like an O'Brien or a maroon or a
18:57 Doohan where things get physical, you know
19:00 You have a guy that you can turn to as opposed to not having
19:02 Anyone or it falls on a guy like Frederick who can do it. We all know that but
19:08 Frederick is now a middle six
19:11 Playdriver, which he's playing like it right now. Like it. Yeah, it shouldn't all fall on him is more or less my point there
19:17 I completely agree and I think that's why adding some physicality
19:22 Adna adding some toughness at the deadline. I don't think is a bad idea for this team now
19:27 In terms of moving guys off the current roster. That's a big question. And I think it's another question of
19:33 What are you giving up to get guys like maroon do hame?

20:49 And now let's get back to the show. Let's get back to the show is right. Let's get back to that show. Why not?
20:55 in terms of
20:58 Dealing anyone off the current roster. We talked a lot back in the summer about
21:04 Hey, what if this team is average and you get to the deadline and you got to make some tough calls van Reams
21:11 Dyke to brusk grizzly. We've talked a lot about to brusk and grizzly throughout the year in terms of dealing them
21:16 Where are you at with dealing guys off the current roster? I
21:21 Mean, I think I'm at the point now where I don't think you move any player unless it's to clear up the necessary
21:29 Capsules to bring someone else and I'm not either moving gala for future assets
21:34 because I think guys people mentioned maybe their value has been hampered that you know, I wouldn't move like grizzly for a
21:40 Fourth round pick one, even though I think he's had some injuries this year and he struggled below what I think people were expecting
21:47 I'm not moving him for a fourth round pick when you can still have him be a useful piece for the playoffs
21:51 Especially when we know injuries gonna happen. I got in the Bruins are well aware of
21:55 It feels like a long time ago
21:57 but I think Donna Sweeney and the Bruins are still remember that Ottawa series when it was like
22:03 Tomorrow like Tommy Cross and all those guys like I don't think they're gonna willingly subtract from an area like that on defense
22:11 But yeah
22:14 I'm at the point where again unless you're like really just trying to clear cast space out with with moving a deal like that a
22:20 Contract like grizzly. I'm not seeing the move like obviously all marker to brush or anything like that. I'm not seeing any
22:26 blockbuster headline stealing
22:30 Trades by the Bruins at all
22:31 But I really can't see them moving too many assets off office team other than being a more of a transactional
22:37 Making the money balance out but here see what your thoughts are. Yeah, I don't I think they've passed it
22:43 I think you've passed you're too good to deal off a top six forward and Jake DeBrusque
22:49 Or a top four left shot defenseman and Matt Chris look and I know people will disagree with us on this
22:54 They'll say oh put low rye in there
22:57 Who are you trusting in the playoffs? Like again low rye has a lot of upside
23:02 We both think he's gonna be really good and he showed it at times up in Boston this year
23:06 But are you ready to go on a deep cup run with a rookie?
23:11 I mean, that's you know, that's a real question
23:14 You got to ask yourself and I get it right we've said all along and I've been consistent in this you need to get future
23:19 Assets you need to find ways into the first round
23:22 You need to keep your draft picks in future years
23:25 especially the high ones obviously have to give if you have to give up a fourth or a fifth for someone like
23:29 You know a depth defenseman you got to do what you got to do
23:32 but the high ones you want to keep or go out and get but to me like
23:37 you need
23:40 keeping DeBrusque and grizzly are kind of like
23:42 Adding guys at the deadline in the sense that for a long time
23:46 We figured Oh grizzly will get dealt off potentially or oh, you know
23:49 You might need to trade to brush off you keep those guys for the stretch run
23:52 You keep them and I think also that their play could improve because they know they're not getting dealt
23:57 I think that's hung over both of their heads this year, especially someone like grizzly who is from here. So
24:02 I'm not trading anyone off the only Pete like I saw like Pluto wrote this the other day about Johnny Beacher potentially being
24:10 a trade chip
24:13 Okay
24:15 Fine, I mean I'm not thrilled about it
24:17 If it if it upgrades your team you do you have to do what you got to do because again
24:22 He's in Providence right now and you know Boquist has found his way up here and you have depth forwards
24:26 but in terms of guys on the roster like I don't know and as you said unless it's to make the money work and
24:34 And you are better because of it both short term and long term
24:37 But I am not dying to give up pieces of this current team when you are
24:45 first in the NHL and
24:47 You are a true Stanley Cup contender at this point
24:49 I don't think now is the time and I get it like if let's say Debreskin grizzly walk in the offseason
24:54 That stinks, you know, you didn't get anything for them
24:57 But at least you will have gotten a playoff run out of them, you know
25:01 And I think that's the biggest thing at this point that you have to focus on
25:04 Yeah, and I think even like maybe the last point there too is like we haven't mentioned
25:10 You know guys like Laurie or Lysel or a murky lava or what have you but again comes back to I?
25:16 Can't see this team being in the pursuit of some top trade targets out there
25:21 We may be would part ways with a lore
25:23 I the right guy was available because you just don't have the money that works like I I can't even like
25:28 Examine those scenarios where they're gonna subtract from they're already pretty barren farm system
25:33 But like again if the right piece came along your hands are more or less tied
25:37 But just the way the cap works out where all right, maybe you can trade
25:41 Look, you know, whatever Laura and murky love and grizzly can make some of the money work
25:46 But you still if you're trying to add an impact piece
25:48 Which you'd imagine would be the asking price for if you're including some of your younger prospects like that
25:53 So gonna move like another contract to to make that whole thing work
25:56 so I just don't really see it being a
25:59 viable option in terms of one them moving guys off the roster for the sake of
26:04 Getting an asset or what have you and even down on the down in Providence or in college down on the farm wherever it may
26:10 Be I can't I can't see the the Bruins either taking that route either. I can't I
26:16 Just I don't think it's the right thing to do
26:19 And I you know, you keep your roster as is and it's starting to gel
26:24 I think that's the biggest thing is over the last month. We talked about it with the offense
26:29 They're just starting to come together and they're they're still in first place and I add to me
26:35 I just go back to there's no reason to trade guys off the off the off the current roster, but
26:40 Anyways, that's been this episode of poke the bear Connor
