More than 22,000 people have become citizens this Australia Day. In the capital on the shore of Lake Burley Griffin 16 people from 10 countries pledged their commitment.

00:21 For the 16 attendees who had their Australian citizenships conferred on them today, the
00:27 invitation was a surprise.
00:29 We weren't expecting this at all and we applied way back and when we got that phone call,
00:35 actually my wife, she got the phone call and yeah, we weren't expecting this at all.
00:40 But we were just finally talking about what if, what if it actually happened, so really
00:46 excited and thankful.
00:48 It was a surprise, but I was very excited to, you know, like witness that moment.
00:54 The 16 people who became Australian citizens here today join some 22,000 people taking
00:59 part in ceremonies right around the country.
