00:00 First of all, I thought that there was segments of the game where we showed our growth.
00:07 We've shown that at times we can play with a team like Duke.
00:12 But there was a few things that stood out to me.
00:17 One being in the second half, 16 second chance points.
00:21 Another being time and score.
00:26 So we're having success attacking them, moving the ball, attacking them, putting them on their heels.
00:31 And then for some reason we take a shot out of that norm.
00:35 Not a fear for what's going on, the plays before them, and a guy comes off and just takes three dribbles and shoots the ball.
00:42 Time and score is critical, especially with teams that are, whether that team is better than a top 15 team,
00:49 it's more like a top 10 team.
00:52 They're skilled, they're talented, they've got great players.
00:59 So in order to beat them, we can't shoot ourselves in the foot.
01:03 And also in the first half, we go down 38 to 20 and then we fight our way back.
01:10 We have to be better, more disciplined than that team.
01:13 Questions?
01:19 When Duke started this game, it missed only its first three shots, or missed only three of its first 10 plus.
01:27 Just wondering how you guys--Duke only missed three of its first 11 shots to start the game.
01:34 How did you guys tighten up the defense there?
01:36 Do you want to keep this one closer in the second half and ultimately come back and make it closer?
01:42 Are you saying that to start the game they made eight of their first?
01:45 Yeah.
01:46 Okay.
01:47 Well, our game plan was to not let the ball in the ball screen, let the fireman get below us.
01:54 So we're supposed to always be ahead of him, so we're dropping.
01:57 So it's two on two and the guard is supposed to force himself around the screen and square the ball up.
02:03 There was a time when Brandon Hart showed instead of walling and zoning up.
02:08 And so the big guy got below him, they throw him the ball, we're in rotations,
02:13 which we should not be, and they get wide open shots.
02:17 We made the adjustment, but from that point on we had dug a hole for ourselves defensively.
02:23 And that's how that team is really talented.
02:26 So, you know, I think that we just got to keep plugging away, continue to get better at ball screen defense,
02:35 communicating with each other, knowing our job, doing our job, and fighting through it.
02:40 Ken, what did you think of Huntley Hatfield?
02:45 He went toe to toe pretty much with both fouls being in.
02:49 I thought he played well.
02:52 You know, he had 11 rebounds, a great indicator for me.
02:58 He scored pretty much at will around the basket, made good strong moves toward the basket, thought he was good.
03:06 We went to him quite a bit.
03:08 We found him in different areas.
03:09 He attacked.
03:11 He played good.
03:12 I just needed other players to play a little better.
03:19 Kenny, you kind of touched about it in the second half before, just those flashes where you guys did have some good possessions
03:25 on offense and just leading to open shots for Duke on defense.
03:28 How do you tie those things together and just build momentum and keep it on your side?
03:33 Well, it's tough because, you know, these teams are really good teams and we're sort of young, but we're trying.
03:40 The biggest thing to answer that question is we have to get better at communicating
03:45 and anticipating what's going on on the court.
03:48 We know what player they're running.
03:50 They're running it over and over again.
03:52 We've seen it on film.
03:53 So you have to talk your way through plays and be alert to what's happening and anticipate and get there.
04:00 And, you know, I think the second half, Proctor went down the lane and just laid us up multiple times.
04:06 We've got to be better than that.
04:08 We have to.
04:14 Any more questions?
04:19 Russ, can you pass that mic to Russ?
04:22 Russ.
04:27 Kenny, in playing with a lot of these games competitively, you know,
04:32 down five in the second half at Carolina and within three tonight,
04:37 is there a point where it almost feels like getting close is as close as you're going to get?
04:44 Like what is it going to take to kind of get over that hump and pull these kind of games out?
04:51 You touched on something.
04:53 It shows something that we're able to get the game close.
04:57 In order to get over the hump, we've got to tighten up.
05:00 We don't have a team that two guys can put us on our back or one guy can get six straight rebounds.
05:08 We have to do it collectively.
05:10 And in order to do that, everybody has to be on the same page, and we have to continue to fight and fight together.
05:17 We can't -- listen, we're playing really good teams,
05:20 and they are experienced, really good teams.
05:23 So we have to make sure that we're doing everything in our power to execute our offense
05:29 and execute defensively and communicate defensively in order to come out with the honors.
05:37 Yes, you talked about you're playing a really good offense, sharing the ball,
05:41 doing the things you need to do, and then somebody takes three dribbles and shoots the ball.
05:45 Is that just guys' immaturity or not being experienced or trying to be heroes, or what do you think it is?
05:54 Probably a little bit of all of it.
05:57 You know, they have to -- we have to understand shot and score.
06:01 We've got to understand time.
06:04 Critical junctions of the game, we're taking a set of dribble and we shoot a ball.
06:10 Well, they're a top-20 team for a reason.
06:14 They're going to defend you, and that's not going to be a good shot for us.
06:18 We have success when we get the ball in the paint and we draw fouls and we spread out.
06:23 We don't have success when we dribble the ball three or four times and then the guy shoots it.
06:28 Some of that is an experience.
06:29 Some of that is learning.
06:32 They're young, but we have to be more disciplined in how we play offense, but also in how we play defense.
06:38 We have to know our job and do our job.
06:42 You know, there are times when not just me, but the whole staff is saying, "Move it, move it, move it,"
06:46 and a guy still dribbles, and he's trying to make a heroes play.
06:52 There are no heroes in this.
06:54 This has got to be togetherness.
06:58 Anything else for Coach?
07:00 All right, thank you.
07:01 Thank you.
