00:02 - That's where art starts, with a doodle.
00:08 That's where I started.
00:11 I'm in school and I'm doodling around,
00:13 pretty soon it's a drawing.
00:14 I'm somebody that just really loved it and admired it
00:21 and brought it forward and found a home for it.
00:27 He set the bar, everything was compared to him.
00:31 Came from surf world, pot rod world, rock world,
00:33 and I was going, I'd rather work with this guy
00:35 way more than the other dude.
00:36 I mean, to me, this dude has more soul.
00:38 - You're all fired!
00:40 - You're all fired!
00:42 - And the mantra is, everything else fails and that succeeds.
00:46 That's all you care about.
00:47 When an idea comes to you out of nowhere,
00:50 that's the real thing,
00:51 so that's what you pay attention to.
00:53 - You've seen his work, Mr. Jim Phillips is here.
00:56 - Oh, hi.
00:57 - Surfing and skateboard artist, Jimmy Phillips.
01:00 - The volume of work that he has done
01:03 is just beyond anything I've ever known.
01:05 - He changed art on skateboards forever.
01:12 - Screaming Hand, Rob Roscoe, all that stuff,
01:17 that's as iconic as the Rolling Stones tongue or something.
01:20 - He was super collaborative with everyone.
01:25 He knew how to make Tom Nox look like Tom Nox.
01:27 He knew how to let me be me,
01:29 even when I didn't even know who the (beep) I was.
01:32 These guys were punks.
01:33 They wanted the wild stuff,
01:34 and so I was right there for it.
01:36 - It's hard for an artist to work at times
01:41 when the business end of things is pushing and tugging
01:44 and due dates and deadlines.
01:46 I was losing ground and I just couldn't do it all.
01:49 (dramatic music)
01:52 - I thought it was all over.
01:57 I thought I had a month to live.
01:58 I didn't think I'd see the end of some of my projects.
02:01 - Happened so fast, there's no taking it for granted.
02:08 - Jim Phillips!
02:13 - He was giving skateboarding its identity.
02:18 - Jimmy was probably the most famous artist
02:21 that nobody ever knew.
