00:00 50% of men over 50 will develop an enlarged prostate,
00:04 which is almost very commonly benign.
00:08 Only one in 10 are cancerous,
00:10 and nine out of 10 cases of prostate enlargement are benign.
00:14 The symptoms are troublesome,
00:16 and they can often be managed with medicines
00:18 or lifestyle changes.
00:20 However, they can suddenly deteriorate,
00:22 in which case the symptoms are very inconvenient.
00:25 The prostate is a walnut-sized gland
00:27 that sits at the base of the bladder,
00:29 and when it enlarges, as it always does in men as they get older,
00:32 it can compress the water pipe and cause urinary symptoms
00:35 such as, you know, the need to go urgently or more often,
00:39 a weaker stream of urine.
00:41 These are very common symptoms,
00:43 and when men get those symptoms,
00:45 they should see their doctor, have it investigated,
00:47 rule out anything else, including prostate cancer,
00:51 and, if necessary, go on to treatment,
00:53 which is often tablets to start with,
00:55 lifestyle changes and, as I say, surgery.
00:57 various forms of surgery, but very commonly done.
