00:02:29 Welcome back, skating fans.
00:02:32 You know who I am.
00:02:33 You know who she is.
00:02:35 I'm Caitlin Weaver, joined by my Pairs analyst, Kirsten Moore
00:02:39 Towers.
00:02:40 We are back for the penultimate event of the day,
00:02:44 Pairs long program.
00:02:46 We have the best in hardware on the line.
00:02:49 Kirsten, what did you think about the short program
00:02:51 yesterday?
00:02:52 Oh, well, I just want to say penultimate event and best
00:02:55 event.
00:02:56 I am biased.
00:02:58 I know.
00:02:59 You're just warmed up from the ice dance.
00:03:01 I just love pair skating so much.
00:03:03 And the short program-- I was going to say rhythm dance--
00:03:05 the short program in the pair event was really fantastic.
00:03:08 We saw some uneven performances, but we also saw some really
00:03:11 incredible stories from some of the less experienced teams who
00:03:15 are coming to this event to be the pinnacle of their season.
00:03:18 We saw some really big wins yesterday.
00:03:20 We also saw a few missteps from reigning champions, Deanna
00:03:24 Stiletto-Dudek and Maxime Deschamps.
00:03:26 Surprising.
00:03:27 They will be hoping to have a better day today,
00:03:30 a day that's a little bit more indicative of who
00:03:32 they are as skaters.
00:03:34 We also saw a fantastic short program from Leah Pereira
00:03:37 and Trent Michaud and Kellyanne Lorrain and Luca Etier.
00:03:41 Those are our top three heading into tonight.
00:03:43 I can't wait.
00:03:44 Oh, it is going to be so exciting.
00:03:46 Thank you for joining us.
00:03:48 Throughout the whole week, we've watched incredible skaters
00:03:51 at the junior level.
00:03:53 Now we're almost finished with our senior events.
00:03:56 And not just saying this because you're my friend, but seriously,
00:03:59 it has been such a joy to share the mic with you.
00:04:02 I've learned so much.
00:04:03 And I love being able to cheer on Canada's athletes
00:04:08 live here at the event.
00:04:10 Absolutely.
00:04:11 And being former skaters ourselves, it is so easy to tell these
00:04:14 athlete stories and to be their biggest cheerleaders.
00:04:17 I cannot wait to watch what they will do today.
00:04:19 Everybody's on their own journey, but it's starting now.
00:04:23 Will we crown a new Pairs champion?
00:04:26 We will.
00:04:27 Don't go away.
00:04:28 Pairs long starting now.

00:07:56 The current record by Canadians in the Senior Pair event is 215.67,
00:08:15 held by Kirsten Moore-Towers and Michael Marinaro of Ontario.
00:08:20 This record was set in January 2020 at the 2020 Canadian Tire National Skating Championships.
00:08:27 Kirsten Moore-Towers and Michael Marinaro of Ontario hold the current record by Canadians in the Senior Pair event with 215.67.
00:08:41 This record was set in January 2020 at the 2020 Canadian Tire National Skating Championships.
00:08:50 The officials for this event.
00:08:55 Please welcome the referee.
00:09:01 The judges.
00:09:11 Kirsten is out of her seat, everybody.
00:09:14 You know what that means. That means there must be pair skating afoot.
00:09:19 I'm going to stay out of my seat, Kaitlin. I'm so excited.
00:09:23 We were privy to some amazing pair skating yesterday.
00:09:28 And I think we're going to see more of that today based on practices that we've seen.
00:09:32 I just can't wait. Looking forward to it.
00:09:35 Taking a look at our judges. Everybody tries so hard to be here, including the judges and technical.
00:09:42 It takes a lot to become a national judge and to be certified, to be a technician.
00:09:49 They go through a rigorous set of studying, testing, just to make sure it's the cream of the crop.
00:09:56 To tell us who's the cream of the crop.
00:09:59 But lucky for me, I've got Kirsten Moore-Towers by my side. I am Kaitlin Weaver.
00:10:04 We just finished some amazing ice dance, but now it's time for some high flying pairs.
00:10:10 Taking the ice is our first group.
00:10:14 Leading us off from Saskatchewan, Ashlyn Schmitz and Tristan Taylor.
00:10:20 From Ontario, Summer Homick and Marty Hobrick.
00:10:26 And from Saskatchewan, Kayden Starinski and Raine Eberl.
00:10:33 Lovely to see two teams from Saskatchewan here.
00:10:36 Here they go.
00:10:44 Kirsten, you were mentioning that we had a bit of a mixed bag yesterday with the short programs.
00:10:49 Could some of these teams be looking for redemption?
00:10:52 Absolutely. I think the name of the game for these three teams is to skate to the best of their ability.
00:10:59 That's what I learned when I spoke yesterday to the coaches of both teams from Saskatchewan.
00:11:05 Garrett Goslin and Dave Schultz, they mentioned that if these kids leave the Kiss and Cry feeling proud of what they've done,
00:11:12 this week will be a success for them.
00:11:15 And really, I think that is in keeping with the goal for all three of these teams.
00:11:21 All at various places in their career and in their teams together.
00:11:26 But really just looking for those personal best skates in this group.
00:11:29 Would you say this first group is full of more of the teams that are in the development stage at the senior level?
00:11:42 Where are we at? Where are we starting off?
00:11:44 Absolutely. I mean, the team of Kayden Starinski and Raine Eberl,
00:11:50 they definitely would have been looking for better yesterday.
00:11:55 Really disappointing for them to find themselves in this first group.
00:11:58 And with a better short program, could have definitely skated later on with some stronger elements.
00:12:05 But absolutely for these first two teams in the developmental stages.
00:12:09 We spoke yesterday about Ashlyn and Tristan starting their season as juniors,
00:12:14 having to go to senior based on a rule change.
00:12:19 Looking at a double twist there by Kayden and Raine.
00:12:22 And for Summer and Marty as well, their program has several planned doubles in it.
00:12:28 The triples are in the developmental stages, but both Summer and Marty have excellent pair skills,
00:12:34 make a great team together.
00:12:37 Led by Allison Perkis, team of so many successful pair teams, Olympian coach.
00:12:45 They're in great hands. They just need to work on those more difficult elements.
00:12:50 Sorry to interrupt.
00:12:51 Kristen, you know, when you're choosing a strategy at this level, how does it stack up?
00:12:59 Do you go for the triple, even if maybe you're unsure it's going to pay off?
00:13:03 Or is it safer to go for the double and maybe get a higher grade of execution?
00:13:08 You know, that's a great question.
00:13:09 And that is a strategy that each team will have individually for themselves.
00:13:15 I think often we'll see pair teams in the senior event going for the triple twist
00:13:20 and oftentimes being awarded with a negative grade of execution.
00:13:25 But I think it's important for their development that they start getting that triple out into competition,
00:13:31 especially in the senior level when these triples really are required to be competitive in senior.
00:13:38 And I think sometimes when you know if a throw triple hasn't been landed before,
00:13:42 then it's definitely better to do a throw double with a positive grade of execution.
00:13:47 We'll see that with Summer and Marty. They will do two throw doubles today.
00:13:51 The loop in particular, not that though, that a triple twist.
00:13:54 Their throw loop in particular has tons of room to be a triple.
00:14:00 That just a strategy conversation and also often a safety conversation.
00:14:05 Caitlin, these elements are incredibly difficult.
00:14:12 And there's so much progression that takes place when learning.
00:14:17 Gratuitous fashion comments. Loving the eye makeup on Ashlyn.
00:14:27 Taking a look here at Cadence and Rain. We mentioned yesterday this team got together in 2018 only to go to Canada Games in 2019.
00:14:36 Their career has taken them so far together, but they're looking for more.
00:14:41 Really disappointing for them yesterday.
00:14:47 Here Summer and Marty. We'll see some really great lifts, a great twist from them.
00:14:58 You were here for practice earlier today, Kirsten. Ever the pair fan. How did these teams look?
00:15:06 Yeah, I was. You know what? You're right. I am the biggest pair fan.
00:15:09 I watch every minute of pair skating I can looking at a lift from Summer and Marty.
00:15:13 These teams look good. Yeah, they're difficult to dismount.
00:15:18 All of these teams looked good. We saw some mistakes, but that's where they're at in their career.
00:15:23 I think with some of the later teams, we'll see them not miss one element that they do in a week of training.
00:15:29 Whereas for some of these teams, it's still a little bit more, as you mentioned, in the developmental stages of learning these tricks.
00:15:36 Where it is customary to take a fall. Ice is slippery. These things are extremely difficult to learn and to do under pressure.
00:15:45 Summer and Marty there with coach Allison Perkis.
00:15:48 The most important thing is that they do achieve their goals here, whatever that may be.
00:15:56 Yeah, and I think that's important to note as well. Not everybody's goal is to be an Olympian.
00:16:02 There are all kinds of different journeys that we see at the national championships.
00:16:06 And I think important to note also that being a high level athlete in this sport equips you with a ton of life skills that will help these athletes in their lives when they're done with this sport eventually.
00:16:19 And I think that's one of the things that I love so much about it.
00:16:24 But of course, we are still at the national championships. And we're really hoping that everybody, all teams have their best skate and really have an experience that can lead them to to be even better next year or to go on to do better things if if this is the end of the road for them.
00:16:44 All the teams seem to be taking a moment, finishing their elements. Taking a moment together and saying, all right, we got this.
00:16:57 First team up. Last minute words. Together.
00:17:11 Representing Saskatchewan.
00:17:16 Allison Smith.
00:17:19 Smith and Tristan Taylor.
00:17:24 Allison and Tristan are coached by David Schultz and Garrett Gosselin.

00:29:32 Well, some good things from Summer and Marty opening with a really nice triple twist.
00:29:38 Probably the highlight of the program. Summer and Marty only started skating together again in September.
00:29:45 So really haven't had a lot of preparation for the season.
00:29:49 That's like five minutes ago in skating time.
00:29:51 Yes. Yeah, really not a lot of time.
00:29:55 As we mentioned before, coached by Allison Perkis.
00:29:58 She is no stranger to starting a team a little bit late in the season.
00:30:03 We saw that last season with Leah Pereira and Trent Michaud and they did that so wonderfully.
00:30:08 But definitely a developmental point for this team.
00:30:12 We saw two throw doubles.
00:30:15 We saw a side-by-side double jump that Summer missed.
00:30:19 We can't be missing double jumps and they know that, of course.
00:30:26 I was delighted by her commitment to the performance.
00:30:29 Absolutely.
00:30:30 All the way through, even with mistakes.
00:30:36 Looks like coach Allison is talking about getting a little bit tight and that's what I saw as well.
00:30:41 Especially on that side-by-side double flip, double toe.
00:30:54 Not bad. Sorry, Caitlin. Not bad on the levels on their sheet from the technical panel.
00:31:02 Triple twist in at a level two with a positive grade of execution.
00:31:08 Here it is. Here are the steps preceding the twist.
00:31:13 Nice height there.
00:31:16 Really nicely done.
00:31:19 Here, this meant to be a side-by-side triple saucow.
00:31:24 Summer just doing a double.
00:31:29 This their group five lift.
00:31:31 I would love to see a little bit more stretch from Summer in the air on that first position.
00:31:36 Losing a little bit of speed on those turns, but Marty did a fabulous job to keep that lift in the air.
00:31:45 Throw double saucow there.
00:31:47 Kirsten, when I think of your air position, I feel like it's so stretched and elongated with endless detail work.
00:31:56 Is that something that is easy to teach or are you just kind of born with that ability?
00:32:04 I think it's really hard to be in the air and requires a lot more core work than perhaps is known by the general public.
00:32:13 Especially when the timing is a little bit off and maybe the hand is not in the correct place.
00:32:18 It can be difficult to feel comfortable in the air.
00:32:21 I think this team has great ability in lifts and will continue to work on doing those in a competition setting.
00:32:30 When the anticipation and perhaps nerves are a little bit higher, we really saw that from them at Challenge this season.
00:32:39 They had a really difficult time with their lifts, which is somewhat uncharacteristic of them.
00:32:44 Everybody handles this competition setting a little bit differently and everybody channels their nerves a little bit differently.
00:32:51 That's perhaps something that this team will work on moving forward.
00:32:55 You're right, a highlight for me is this choreo sequence and this team's performance quality.
00:33:01 Total score in the long program 86.62, putting them in first total 130.4.
00:33:10 Enough for the lead for now for Summer and Marty.
00:33:15 They look pleased.
00:33:19 Last in this first warm-up group, representing Saskatchewan, Cadence Dernitsky and Rain Iberle.
00:33:32 She's 18, he's 24.
00:33:35 The third at Challenge, coached by Dave and Vicki Schultz.
00:33:40 Free program music, Leave a Light On, choreographed by Vicki Schultz.

00:38:10 >> Nice to see that emotion there from Cadence.
00:38:13 It really was a fight from this team all the way through.
00:38:18 Emotion like that makes me think there might be something behind this that we don't know.
00:38:25 I know that this team spoke last season about if Nationals would be their last event.
00:38:31 Cadence considering going away to school.
00:38:35 I don't know where they're at in terms of that decision.
00:38:40 But if this was their last time at the Canadian National Championships,
00:38:44 they can say that they fought through.
00:38:47 They had lots of great things in there.
00:38:49 Certainly some struggle.
00:38:52 Yes, but they fought through the things and then it kind of worked.
00:38:56 Absolutely.
00:38:57 And this is an example we spoke about whether or not to put the triple in the program.
00:39:02 And this triple twist is an example of that.
00:39:04 It's in it a level B, which means they were awarded no features from the technical panel.
00:39:09 But I think it's important for these senior teams to get these triples into the program.
00:39:14 We saw a few mistakes, some elements with negative grade of execution.
00:39:19 But to throw triples in the program.
00:39:22 Double Axel in combination with two double toes, a triple sow attempt that we saw Cadence take a fall on.
00:39:29 But technically the program is built as a senior free program.
00:39:35 They just had some difficulty getting everything cleanly landed and accomplished today.
00:39:42 There were some nice moments in the choreography.
00:39:45 They had nice flow.
00:39:48 Here their triple twist.
00:39:51 Whoops.
00:39:55 And into their double Axel, double toe, double toe.
00:40:00 Cadence was like a cat in here on that double Axel.
00:40:04 Certainly off axis.
00:40:05 She did well to find her foot.
00:40:07 This, the lift, we saw them miss yesterday in the short program.
00:40:11 Electing today to stay on two hands for rain.
00:40:14 So they will lose that feature that has rain coming to one hand.
00:40:18 So this lift, just in at a level three.
00:40:21 And then he let go and she still landed.
00:40:24 That's cool.
00:40:28 Throw triple lutz.
00:40:30 Big touchdown, but she's on her feet.
00:40:37 I really love the choreo sequence in this program, Caitlin.
00:40:40 I thought the program was choreographed so well.
00:40:44 Downgraded triple Salchow there for cadence.
00:40:46 So not what she was hoping for.
00:40:48 I saw her do quite a few on practice today that were great.
00:40:51 And again, the throws just look really big and a little bit out of control.
00:40:56 She could control that a little bit more.
00:40:59 She would have a much easier time seeing her say to rain there, it's okay.
00:41:04 Really great teamwork.
00:41:06 Their coaches have said that they have worked together so well as a team,
00:41:11 particularly in the second half of this season.
00:41:18 Score for the free program, 88.47.
00:41:22 First in that segment so far with a total of 132.53.
00:41:28 They maintain their lead in this first warmup group.
00:41:35 Nice to see some happy faces, surely of relief.
00:41:40 And that's exactly what their coaches said.
00:41:42 They just want to leave the Kiss and Cry proud and happy for what they've done.
00:41:46 And it looks like they're doing that.
00:41:50 Don't go too far.
00:41:52 We're just going to patch the ice.
00:41:54 Do a quick flood.
00:41:56 And then it's our top two groups of senior pairs.
00:42:00 It's about to get really good, Caitlin.
00:42:02 It's about to get really good up in here.
00:42:05 See you soon.

00:42:49 And meet me if you will.
00:42:51 Never mind, never mind.
00:42:53 I wonder what they think of me.
00:42:55 They think of me.
00:42:59 Now I'm always singing in life's prayer.
00:43:02 Oh, you took me there.
00:43:05 Oh, you're always the most you are.

00:43:56 We are so thankful that the vast majority of Canadians
00:43:59 support Canadian chicken farmers and the supply management
00:44:02 system.
00:44:04 When consumers see the Raised by a Canadian Farmer brand,
00:44:07 they can know that that chicken was raised in a healthy, safe
00:44:11 environment.

00:45:12 You just texted.
00:45:13 Wow, that looks good.
00:45:15 You know what?
00:45:16 The team sucks.
00:45:17 We were going to lose that game anyway.
00:45:18 Be home in five.
00:45:21 Hey, Nadia.
00:45:22 Hey, Peter.
00:45:23 Have you seen the online Skate Canada store?
00:45:26 For the official merchandise?
00:45:28 Yes.
00:45:29 It's literally amazing.
00:45:30 You should get it.

00:46:16 Oh, you just texted.
00:46:18 Wait, that's dinner?
00:46:20 You know, Michael bounced back.
00:46:21 He's strong, emotionally.
00:46:23 They were together, what, two years?

00:55:16 [MUSIC PLAYING]
00:55:18 Next warm-up group is starting.
00:55:23 From Quebec, Elizabeth Thibodeau-Mayotte
00:55:27 and Daniel Villeneuve.
00:55:30 From Ontario, Fiona Bombardier and Gabrielle Farrand.
00:55:35 And from Quebec, Emy Carignan and Brian Fierro.
00:55:43 I need to work on my French, everybody.
00:55:46 It's not a secret.
00:55:48 Oh, Kirsten, I'm going to miss you.
00:55:56 Me too.
00:55:57 We've got some great talent on the ice.
00:56:01 We really do have some great talent on the ice, Caitlin.
00:56:04 We have first and second place at Skate Canada Challenge
00:56:10 on the ice for this warm-up.
00:56:14 And they've been doing some really great things so far
00:56:18 this season.
00:56:19 Here on your screen, Fiona Bombardier, Gabrielle Farrand.
00:56:22 Fiona did the singles competition a little bit
00:56:26 earlier.
00:56:27 Cameraman learned from yesterday and kept her in the shot
00:56:30 on the single twist today.
00:56:31 She was prepared for a big one.
00:56:34 What an interesting story with these two.
00:56:36 Fiona's first year of pair skating.
00:56:38 She finds herself in the senior pair and the senior women's
00:56:41 event.
00:56:42 No easy feat here.
00:56:43 Emy Carignan, Emy and her partner Brian,
00:56:46 won the challenge event.
00:56:47 And I have to say, Caitlin, I've seen this team skate together
00:56:50 for a number of years, and I have never seen the confidence
00:56:53 and surety in the elements that they have right now.
00:56:57 Is it surety or assurety?
00:56:59 Suredness?
00:57:01 Sure.
00:57:06 Double twist there from Fiona and Gab, my partner.
00:57:11 And here, Elizabeth Thibodeau-Mayotte and Danielle
00:57:15 Villeneuve.
00:57:16 This team taken out of most of the season last season
00:57:19 because of an injury to Dan.
00:57:21 So really just happy to be back at the national championships.
00:57:25 They had a great skate for them yesterday.
00:57:30 And for them, really, this week is all about personal growth.
00:57:33 They're just getting back into the swing of things,
00:57:36 back into skating pairs at a national championships.
00:57:41 Turn out of a double axel there from Emy.
00:57:44 You will recognize the coaches of this warmup group closest
00:57:51 to us, Stephanie Balois and Vilenne Emard.
00:57:54 This, the team that coaches Kelly-Ann Lorrain and Luca
00:57:58 Etier.
00:57:59 Also there, we have Jose Picard and Julie Marcotte,
00:58:02 coaches of Deanna and Max and Bruno Marcotte and Raul Leblanc,
00:58:08 coach of everybody at some point,
00:58:12 but most famously of Megan Duhamel and Eric Radford.
00:58:16 Where can the pairs look to gain the maximum number of points
00:58:29 in the long program?
00:58:31 I think for the pair teams and for this group,
00:58:34 especially it really is about maximizing
00:58:38 their levels and GOEs.
00:58:40 So creative execution.
00:58:42 Often we see, we're seeing the past couple of days,
00:58:45 these teams losing levels on silly things like death spirals
00:58:49 and spins that I'm sure everybody thinks
00:58:53 takes a little bit less brainpower.
00:58:55 And to some extent you're right,
00:58:58 but these teams are going to want to do all of their features
00:59:00 very clearly and try to do all of their elements
00:59:03 with a positive grade of execution.
00:59:06 That means that they look effortless,
00:59:08 that they hit nice positions, that they have flow and speed.
00:59:13 They're doing things on time with the music
00:59:15 and all of these additional grade of execution points
00:59:19 really make a difference in the total point score,
00:59:21 or they can make a difference in the other way
00:59:23 if you're losing a lot of points on the grade of execution.
00:59:26 We will see two throws in the free program today.
00:59:30 Skaters can choose any throws.
00:59:33 They have to be different.
00:59:35 We'll see three lifts from everybody.
00:59:37 We've spoken a lot about the group five lift.
00:59:40 Skaters can do two group five lifts out of their three lifts,
00:59:44 but they have to be of a different variety.
00:59:47 Was that a throw toe loop?
00:59:49 That was a throw toe loop.
00:59:50 The only one we'll see in this event,
00:59:52 a little bit more uncommon than the loop, the sow and the lutz.
00:59:58 Looking at a lutz now from Fiona Bombardi and Gabrielle Fahun,
01:00:02 really beautifully done.
01:00:04 Also today we will see the pair combination spin.
01:00:11 Yesterday we saw the side by side spin.
01:00:14 Today it will be the pair spin.
01:00:16 We will see a death spiral.
01:00:18 It has to be different than the death spiral
01:00:20 these teams did in the short.
01:00:22 Yesterday they did a forward inside death spiral.
01:00:24 Today they will have to do one of the other three.
01:00:28 Most earning death spiral is the forward outside.
01:00:32 Almost nobody in the world does that one,
01:00:34 but we will see it today from Diana Stiletto-Dudek and Maxim Deschamps.
01:00:39 Teams will do a twist.
01:00:42 There's a double from Amy and Brian.
01:00:44 They will do a choreo sequence.
01:00:46 Choreo sequence is an automatic level one for everybody.
01:00:50 So the judges will be looking to see
01:00:53 how the choreo sequence makes sense with the program,
01:00:57 how it's musical, how the team relates to one another within it,
01:01:01 if it's unique.
01:01:03 And it is judged simply on its--
01:01:07 it has to be two different moves.
01:01:10 And they can be anything.
01:01:12 Both partners need to do two.
01:01:14 Judges will be awarding grade of execution on that.
01:01:18 You mentioned that Fiona Bombardier,
01:01:20 we've seen her already today in the women's event.
01:01:23 At what point do you think, Kirsten,
01:01:26 being in two disciplines benefits
01:01:29 but then could potentially detract from the other?
01:01:33 Is there a point when you really do prioritize one over the other?
01:01:38 I think there has to be.
01:01:40 And today we saw a lot of difficulty from Fiona.
01:01:43 I don't know if that is because of double discipline
01:01:46 or if it just simply wasn't her day.
01:01:49 It's hard to know, but doing two disciplines at the highest level,
01:01:52 such as this one, something has got to give at some point.
01:01:57 That's the end of the warm-up for group two.
01:02:01 A lot of bright lights...
01:02:06 in this group.
01:02:10 [no audio]
01:02:13 Final moments...
01:02:20 before their long program.
01:02:25 They look ready.
01:02:27 From Quebec, Elisabeth Thibodeau-Mayotte
01:02:30 and Danielle Villeneuve.
01:02:33 She's 21, he's 26.
01:02:36 Coached by Stephanie Valois.
01:02:39 Free program music, "Querer" and "AlegrĂa"
01:02:42 from Cirque du Soleil, choreographed by Julie Macott.

01:06:45 [music continues]
01:06:48 [applause]
01:07:01 Well, we started strong, Caitlin.
01:07:08 We saw them do only just a double twist,
01:07:11 but at a level three with positive grade of execution.
01:07:15 It looks ready for triple to me.
01:07:18 Had a couple of nice lifts in there.
01:07:20 Not the highest level of difficulty in this program, obviously.
01:07:24 We saw a throw double X,
01:07:26 and we saw what was supposed to be a side-by-side double flip
01:07:29 in combination, but missed by both partners.
01:07:32 Starting to see the elements in the program
01:07:38 start to make one unit.
01:07:44 I think it's clear between the first group
01:07:48 and perhaps the last group
01:07:50 where the athletes are more focused on achieving the levels
01:07:54 and making sure that, you know, the elements are clean,
01:07:58 and there's less focus on the construction of the program,
01:08:02 the transitions, the in-betweens.
01:08:05 And I feel like in this group we're really starting to see
01:08:08 those things start to come together.
01:08:11 This team's goal this week was just to show what they can do
01:08:15 and to be organized and structured,
01:08:18 and I thought for the most part they had done that in practice,
01:08:21 but we can see when you put it all together in a long program,
01:08:24 a lot is going on, and we saw towards especially the second half
01:08:27 of that program, they were really searching for each other
01:08:31 and having some missteps.
01:08:34 Let's take a look.
01:08:37 I love a tango, so they had me off the beginning.
01:08:51 I'm trying to count how many times I've heard you say that this week.
01:08:54 OK, two times, Kirsten. That was the second time.
01:08:57 Huge double twist there, and just so much room for a triple.
01:09:00 Here they're throwing triple sauco.
01:09:03 Fighting to hang on.
01:09:06 Just need a little bit more strength in the upper body for Ellie.
01:09:10 A really nice pop and lift.
01:09:13 Absolutely, yeah. That was a nice takeoff for that group 5 axle lift.
01:09:17 And here we see the group 5 reverse lift.
01:09:20 I know it's really confusing.
01:09:23 This into their carry, I saw in the practice rink,
01:09:26 Danielle was almost hitting the boards.
01:09:29 I think that's indicative of the increase in speed and flow
01:09:32 on this element, that they're having a hard time keeping it in the rink.
01:09:35 But for my peace of mind, I would love to see that
01:09:38 a little bit further away from the boards.
01:09:41 Here a throw double Lutz.
01:09:44 Obviously the triple is not ready for competition.
01:09:47 Nice, beautiful position from Elizabeth.
01:09:52 And from Danielle, I notice sometimes
01:09:55 the man's posture looks to counterbalance the woman in the air
01:10:00 and his was so straight and seemingly effortless.
01:10:04 Yeah, we're looking for really good alignment.
01:10:07 Sometimes with such maximum effort from these men in their lips,
01:10:10 we see their ribs flaring and their back arching
01:10:13 and ideally we see them with their ribs tucked in,
01:10:16 arm right beside their ear, really nice alignment.
01:10:20 And that is incredibly difficult when you're lifting a human person above your body.
01:10:24 Who's moving?
01:10:27 While you're on ice.
01:10:30 Not for the faint of heart for sure.
01:10:33 But we did see a couple of planned level 3 lifts in there
01:10:37 for Elizabeth and Dan, all 3 lifts in at a level 3 now.
01:10:41 And that is just where they are safely at.
01:10:44 Their team has decided that this is the best plan of attack for them.
01:10:47 I think it was a good one for this place in their career.
01:10:50 And they'll go home and work in the off season on getting those lifts in at a level 4.
01:10:55 They've had a change in coaches this season.
01:11:00 And are always working--we're all as athletes working to reinvent ourselves all the time
01:11:08 and to continue to shape and form who we are as teams and as people.
01:11:14 And that is how we progress and move up in the rankings in this sport.
01:11:18 And I think a lot of these elements are in a great starting place
01:11:22 and in a good spot to increase that level of difficulty for next season.
01:11:28 Which they will absolutely need.
01:11:30 In order to be competitive in senior pairs, you need to do 2 throw triples.
01:11:34 Ideally 2 side-by-side triples, and if not, 1 triple and 1 double axel.
01:11:39 But in terms of being competitive in the world, a program that's full of triples is a requirement.
01:11:47 And if there's any indication that age is not really a deterrent anymore,
01:11:57 pairs seems to be the place where athletes--the average age is getting older.
01:12:04 And I think that's such an empowering thing, especially for women who usually get a little bit more
01:12:10 flack from the media on how old you are in this sport.
01:12:15 Someone like Diana Stelarodudek is doing such great things.
01:12:20 She's better than ever.
01:12:21 And then there's Alena Savchenko and Bruno Masso who won in their 30s.
01:12:26 I think also in pair skating, Caitlin, it takes a while to develop, which is why longevity is possible.
01:12:33 I think obviously we have to take care of our bodies and remain healthy and remain strategic and train smart.
01:12:40 But longevity, we're seeing it more and more often in pair skating and certainly in pair skating in Canada
01:12:47 when our reigning champions are 40 and 32 and getting better all the time.
01:12:52 And it doesn't matter anymore, and I love that.
01:12:55 I don't think age needs to be a part of the conversation.
01:12:57 Obviously, a junior, there is a limit to that.
01:13:01 But I love that, you know, you can find your greatness at any time and your journey can, will and should look different than everybody else's.
01:13:14 And so, you know, as I'm looking down at Elizabeth and Danielle's sheet, I see 21, 26.
01:13:20 And I had to check myself even and be like, they have all the time, as much time as they want to grow

01:28:35 - In the program, unfortunately, I felt like I saw
01:28:38 the confidence sucked out of Amy when she missed
01:28:42 her double axel, popped it into a single, and then fell,
01:28:45 which is a very unusual mistake, for sure, and then
01:28:49 just never seemed to recover from that.
01:28:53 It's really a shame, Caitlin, this team won the
01:28:55 Skate Canada Challenge event in December, and I know
01:28:57 we've spoken about how the top-ranked teams in Canada
01:29:00 were not present at that event when they won,
01:29:03 but it still was a confidence booster that I saw
01:29:05 in their practices here.
01:29:07 I was seeing them really step into the best version
01:29:10 of Amy and Brian here, and this long program was
01:29:14 certainly not what they practiced for, probably not
01:29:19 what they expected today, and these are all lessons
01:29:24 a relatively young team, Amy only 17 years old,
01:29:28 and these are all invaluable lessons, but definitely
01:29:32 a disappointment for this team today.
01:29:35 - They had a strong short yesterday, definitely

01:29:41 - Looks like Julie is asking if Amy checked her head.
01:29:44 I was a little bit concerned about that as well
01:29:47 on the third triple saucow.
01:29:48 - There were some wacky things in that program,
01:29:52 and when pairs get wacky, they get scary.
01:29:57 - Absolutely, and it is the mark of a veteran team

01:30:05 I thought Brian did that relatively well on their
01:30:08 first lift, I'm sure we'll get to see it in a moment.
01:30:11 Here their triple twist, they'll want to get that
01:30:14 climbing higher and higher as they continue to work
01:30:18 on it, but certainly a solid starting point.
01:30:20 Here very weird, Emi doing a single axel and falling down.
01:30:26 This, Brian's hand slips off of Emi, and you see him
01:30:29 trying with all of his might to keep her up,
01:30:32 that in at a group five axel lift, but only a base level.
01:30:37 Just side by side double flip Euler double saucow,
01:30:41 again looking to the future, they'll want to have
01:30:44 two higher scoring side by side jumps.
01:30:49 This a highlight of the program for me, a group five
01:30:53 reverse lift in at a level three.
01:30:56 Oh, but, okay, missed the throw toe, coming down on
01:31:00 two feet, stays on her feet, and I think for that point
01:31:03 in the program and how the elements went in the first half,
01:31:06 I think that was a win for Emi, but certainly capable
01:31:11 of doing that a lot better.
01:31:14 They really fought until the very end here.
01:31:18 Pair combination spin in at a level four, the highest
01:31:22 level with a positive grade of execution.
01:31:25 - You know, when things seem to unravel as the program
01:31:29 goes, that's one thing, but for two major mistakes
01:31:33 right in the beginning, and then to rebound and pull
01:31:37 themselves together, at least to get through the next
01:31:40 elements, I think that shows a lot of grit.

01:34:18 Can you walk us through something to look out for with
01:34:22 each of these pairs?
01:34:23 Absolutely.
01:34:24 I think we'll see with those teams that really are being
01:34:30 awarded the highest levels in all of their elements and the
01:34:33 highest grade of execution, they will do their elements with
01:34:36 speed and these will watch how they fill out the ice and how
01:34:41 fast they're going into and out of their elements.
01:34:44 They will never be searching for each other in their program
01:34:47 because they will reach out their hand and they will know
01:34:50 that the other person is there.
01:34:52 There are some things to look for that maybe aren't as visible
01:34:56 to the untrained eye and that will be the features in some of
01:35:00 these elements to get the highest level awarded to them.
01:35:04 And sometimes these are the things that can make it a little
01:35:07 bit confusing for a viewer because there are so many hidden

01:35:39 Third place in the pair event.
01:35:40 Really remarkable.
01:35:41 Electing not to do singles this season.
01:35:45 When I asked Leah why, what her rationale was behind that, she
01:35:49 said for a couple of reasons.
01:35:51 She knew that Trent and her had a great future together and they
01:35:54 had huge goals for this season, which would be easier to achieve
01:35:58 with more specific pair time.

01:36:05 She also started university this year and felt like doing single
01:36:08 and pair and part-time school would be a lot.
01:36:11 That does sound like a lot.
01:36:12 She was proud of her single season last year and she felt like
01:36:15 she gave it her all, especially at nationals.
01:36:17 So to end her career on such a positive high was another
