00:00 - Me?
00:01 No!
00:02 (explosion)
00:03 (grunting)
00:04 - Robert, are you alright?
00:06 - Welcome to WatchMojo, and today,
00:08 we're counting down our picks for the best types in Pokemon,
00:11 and we'll be ranking them all.
00:13 - Alright, use Dragon Press!
00:16 (siren blaring)
00:19 - Number 18, Ice.
00:23 Let's get the good out of the way first.
00:25 Ice type is an incredible offensive typing.
00:28 It hits a lot of common and powerful types,
00:31 including Dragon, Flying, Grass,
00:34 and Ground super effectively.
00:36 (siren blaring)
00:39 Additionally, their designs are quite striking.
00:43 But like real Ice, Ice types are extremely fragile.
00:47 Even if they have good defense or a good secondary typing,
00:51 there's no getting around the fact that Ice is weak
00:53 to some of the most common attacking types in the game,
00:56 like Fire, Rock, and Fighting.
00:59 Plus, it only resists itself.
01:02 Even Ice's strong offense isn't that great,
01:05 considering so many other Pokemon can learn Ice type moves.
01:10 (screaming)
01:12 - I've seen both of you!
01:13 (screaming)
01:15 - So, there's little benefit to using an Ice type
01:22 when you can just teach a different Pokemon an Ice move.
01:26 (screaming)
01:28 - Frost Slash counter strikes with a powerful Ice Beam
01:30 that has Pikachu trapped and unable to move!
01:33 - Number 17, Bug.
01:36 This type has a reputation for being weak,
01:39 and it's pretty deserved.
01:41 A whopping seven different Pokemon types
01:43 resist Bug type attacks.
01:45 (siren blaring)
01:48 (explosion)
01:51 Additionally, while they do resist common attacking types
01:56 like Fighting, Ground, and Grass,
01:59 they're weak to common ones too.
02:01 Flying, Fire, and Rock types are everywhere.
02:05 Bug types also tend to be early-game Pokemon
02:08 who never attain the power of other types.
02:11 (screaming)
02:13 Bugs have gotten better as of late,
02:18 with newer, stronger moves,
02:20 and even a few powerhouse Pokemon to improve their stable.
02:24 Even so, they're still outclassed
02:26 by most other types on average.
02:28 (screaming)
02:30 Number 16, Poison.
02:37 For most of the franchise,
02:39 Poison has been a bottom-tier type.
02:41 Despite resisting an impressive five different types,
02:44 Poison is weak to two common powerful types,
02:47 Ground and Psychic.
02:49 But what's worse is that, until recently,
02:52 Poison was only super effective against Grass types.
02:56 (screaming)
02:58 And with Flying and Fire types being so common,
03:05 there was little reason to use Poison instead.
03:08 All that changed with the introduction of Fairy type,
03:12 a stronger, newer type that Poison is great against.
03:15 Recent buffs aside,
03:17 Poison has always been a reliable type
03:19 for defensive stall strategies
03:22 and chip damage with the Poison status condition.
03:25 While they rarely win beauty contests,
03:28 Poison types do have their uses.
03:30 (screaming)
03:33 Number 15, Rock.
03:37 In concept, Rock type sounds great.
03:40 Although generally slow,
03:41 Rock Pokemon are very physically defensive,
03:44 and they're great against types like Flying,
03:47 Fire, and the aforementioned Bug and Ice.
03:50 (roaring)
03:51 - Onix, tackle attack!
03:52 (beeping)
03:55 - It even has resistances to Normal
03:59 and Fire types among others.
04:01 But the trouble is how many types it's weak to.
04:05 Five.
04:06 As tied with another type we'll be discussing later,
04:09 as the most in the entire franchise.
04:12 They're all super common types too,
04:14 like Water, Grass, Ground, and Fighting.
04:18 - Good luck!
04:19 (screaming)
04:21 - It's even weak to Steel,
04:24 which is basically a better Rock type.
04:27 And because Rock is so often paired with Ground,
04:30 it takes quadruple damage to some types.
04:33 While Rock can be tough in some situations,
04:36 in many cases, it's surprisingly paper thin.
04:39 - Yes, I know it will.
04:41 (roaring)
04:43 - Bowser, no!
04:44 (roaring)
04:46 - Number 14, Normal.
04:48 These are just regular old Pokemon.
04:50 They may not be great against anything,
04:53 but there can also be Normal type strength.
04:56 - Aloha, Thunder Fang!
04:58 (roaring)
05:00 - They're only weak to Fighting type attacks,
05:04 and they're immune to Ghost.
05:06 While Ghost is also immune to Normal,
05:08 and it's resisted by Defensive types like Rock and Steel,
05:12 it otherwise hits everything normally.
05:15 (roaring)
05:17 Despite often featuring as the weak Pokemon
05:22 early on in the Pokemon journeys,
05:25 Normal types also have some of the most diverse moveables
05:28 in the series, often being able to learn
05:31 a wide variety of attacks to be great
05:33 against any type you need to hit.
05:36 So while they're rarely the standouts on a team,
05:39 Normal types can have a lot of versatility
05:42 in supportive roles.
05:44 - Sluggy!
05:44 (roaring)
05:47 - Number 13, Grass.
05:53 Out of the three starter Pokemon types,
05:56 Grass is easily the worst.
05:58 - You can do it, Bulbasaur!
05:59 Razor Leaf!
06:00 (roaring)
06:02 - It's tied with Rock for having the most weaknesses
06:08 of any type, with five, and most of them
06:12 are common types like Flying, Fire, and Ice.
06:15 In addition, seven different types
06:17 resist Grass-type attacks.
06:19 However, compared to many of the previous types,
06:22 Grass isn't as bad, thanks to some decent resistances
06:26 and the fact that it hits types like Water,
06:28 Ground, and Rock super effectively.
06:31 (roaring)
06:37 From an aesthetic perspective, Grass also has
06:40 some of the most iconic and striking designs,
06:43 given that most of them are based on plants.
06:46 And of course, we all love our Grass starter Pokemon.
06:50 - Barrel!
06:51 (roaring)
06:53 - Number 12, Flying.
07:00 Flying types are very common and have been combined
07:03 with every other type.
07:05 Their designs take inspiration from basically
07:07 every real or imagined creature with wings,
07:11 or the moves through the air.
07:12 - All right, Pidgeot, bust attack now!
07:15 (screaming)
07:17 - Additionally, they're great against
07:22 frequently seen types, namely Bug, Fighting, and Grass.
07:27 While they're weak against Rock, Ice, and Electric,
07:30 Flying types also enjoy some nice resistances
07:33 and an immunity to Ground.
07:35 (roaring)
07:37 Honestly, if we had to point to one type
07:44 as the absolute middle of the road for Pokemon types,
07:47 Flying type would probably be it.
07:49 It has some drawbacks, but just as many strengths.
07:53 - Star!
07:55 Star!
07:56 Star!
07:56 (screaming)
08:00 - Number 11, Ground.
08:02 In terms of offensive types,
08:04 Ground is easily one of the best.
08:07 It hits a whopping five types super effectively,
08:10 including bulky defensive ones like Steel, Rock, and Poison,
08:15 as well as quick powerhouses like Fire and Electric.
08:19 - Trio, trio, trio!
08:20 (dramatic music)
08:23 - Additionally, while Ground moves can't hit Flying types,
08:26 Ground types are completely immune to Electric attacks,
08:29 which comes in handy.
08:31 (screaming)
08:33 However, a major drawback of Ground types
08:38 is that in addition to many of them being slow,
08:41 they're weak to both Grass and Water,
08:43 which are everywhere, as well as Ice.
08:47 Regardless, Ground types can still send shockwaves,
08:50 or rather earthquakes, through most Pokemon teams.
08:53 (roaring)
08:59 - Number 10, Dark.
09:01 Introduced initially as a hard counter to the Psychic types,
09:05 Dark types are immune to the ESP Pokemon,
09:08 and hit them super effectively.
09:10 (screaming)
09:13 They're also great against Ghost Pokemon.
09:16 Often sporting high attack power
09:18 and cool and/or sinister designs,
09:21 Dark types were once near the top of the food chain,
09:24 given that their only weaknesses
09:26 were the comparatively puny Bug types,
09:28 as well as Fighting types.
09:30 (roaring)
09:33 However, since Bugs have gotten better,
09:35 and with the introduction of Fairy types,
09:37 Dark Pokemon aren't as good as they once were.
09:40 Yet, even if they've been nerfed somewhat,
09:43 Dark types remain a solid choice.
09:46 (screaming)
09:48 - Number nine, Fighting.
09:52 With a name like Fighting type,
09:54 it only makes sense that these Pokemon
09:57 have great physical attack strength.
09:59 - Knock off attack, let's go!
10:00 (screaming)
10:03 - Frequently boasting strong moves and tough designs,
10:07 Fighting Pokemon hit hard,
10:09 and they do so against five different types,
10:12 including the aforementioned Dark, Normal, Rock,
10:16 and Ice types, as well as Steel.
10:18 Their blows may pass through Ghosts,
10:20 but Fighting types strike most types pretty well,
10:24 and often have diverse move pools
10:26 to deal with the ones they don't.
10:28 (screaming)
10:31 Sadly, Fighting is another type
10:35 that fell off slightly when Fairy was introduced,
10:39 now being weak to that, along with Psychic and Flying types.
10:43 They still pack plenty of punch, though.
10:45 (screaming)
10:48 - Number eight, Psychic.
10:51 Ah, how the mighty have fallen.
10:54 Once the most broken and overpowered type in Pokemon,
10:58 the Psychic type has gotten much weaker as time goes on.
11:02 (screaming)
11:04 This is primarily due to the introduction of Dark and Steel,
11:13 which are immune and resistant to it, respectively.
11:16 That isn't to say Psychic isn't still strong, though.
11:19 Apart from those two, only other Psychics resist it.
11:22 Then sure, its weaknesses to Bug, Ghost,
11:25 and Dark are a problem.
11:27 (shrieking)
11:29 - Touch that!
11:30 (screaming)
11:32 - However, Psychic types tend to have
11:35 the highest special attack of all Pokemon.
11:39 Additionally, there are many strong
11:41 and legendary Psychic types,
11:43 making the type quite powerful on average.
11:46 (dramatic music)
11:49 (explosion)
11:52 - Number seven, Ghost.
11:55 One of the main counters to Psychic types,
11:58 Ghost hit these powerhouses super effectively,
12:01 along with themselves.
12:03 - Gate card, Shadow Ball!
12:04 (dramatic music)
12:07 - In addition to making Ghosts one of only two types
12:13 whose attacks are good against themselves,
12:16 it also makes them very similar to Dark types.
12:19 However, it's in other areas that make Ghosts
12:22 better than their fellow spooky Pokemon.
12:25 - Use Shadow Punch!
12:27 - Dust Rock!
12:28 - Ghosts are resisted by fewer types,
12:32 and they're the only type with two immunities
12:35 being completely unaffected by Normal and Fighting types,
12:39 whose moves are everywhere.
12:41 Ghost types often have tricky status moves
12:44 and the fact that they're weak to other Ghosts
12:46 and Dark types can make them a more technical type than most,
12:50 but they're still scary good.
12:52 - Where he goes!
12:54 (screaming)
12:58 - Number six, Fire.
13:01 As one of the three starter types,
13:03 Fire types are certainly one of the most popular
13:06 kinds of Pokemon.
13:08 Their fierce and fiery designs
13:10 definitely leave an impression.
13:11 - Ready, fire!
13:13 - Lucario!
13:15 - Not only do they look amazing,
13:17 they also hit amazingly well too,
13:20 striking four types super effectively,
13:23 including Ice, Bug, Grass, and Steel.
13:26 They're also surprisingly good defensively,
13:29 since they resist everything they're good against,
13:31 along with Fire and Fairy moves.
13:40 While Fire types are held back
13:42 from the absolute top tier by their weakness
13:45 to Common types, Ground, Rock, and Water,
13:48 they're still a good Pokemon type that burns brightly.
13:51 (screaming)
13:55 Number five, Electric.
13:57 Given that the mascot of the whole Pokemon franchise
14:00 is an Electric type, this one is certainly in the spotlight.
14:04 But Electric Pokemon are more than just
14:07 the face of the franchise.
14:09 (screaming)
14:11 Not only are most of them extremely fast,
14:18 they also pack plenty of voltage.
14:20 Electric attacks are fantastic against Water and Flying,
14:24 which are frequently used types.
14:26 - Man, that's fast!
14:27 - And while they might not be good against each other
14:32 or Grass or Dragon types,
14:34 they only have one weakness, Ground,
14:37 which is also immune to Electric moves.
14:40 Honestly, there's not a whole lot wrong with Electric types.
14:44 There are just some types that are better than them.
14:46 (screaming)
14:50 - Oh, I didn't connect!
14:51 (screaming)
14:53 - Number four, Water.
14:56 Out of all the Pokemon types, Water is the most common.
14:59 Water is everywhere in the Pokemon world.
15:02 Some have said there's too much.
15:04 And the glut of Water Pokemon means
15:07 that there are plenty to choose from.
15:09 The type itself is excellent.
15:16 It only has two weaknesses in Grass and Electric,
15:19 which are easy to avoid.
15:21 Meanwhile, it hits the Earthy types, Ground and Rock
15:25 super effectively, along with Fire.
15:27 Its defenses aren't half bad either,
15:30 since Water Pokemon resist attacks from Ice, Steel, Fire,
15:34 and other Water types.
15:36 (grunting)
15:39 - What's going on?
15:41 - With their ease of use and all-around strengths,
15:44 Water types may not have the power of our top three,
15:47 but any decent trainer will have one on their team.
15:51 - All right, Hydro Pump!
15:52 - Number three, Fairy.
15:56 The newest type on the Pokemon block,
15:58 these ethereal Pokemon haven't been around long,
16:01 but that just means they haven't got a chance
16:04 to be nerfed yet.
16:05 Fairy types' only two weaknesses are Poison and Steel,
16:09 which aren't typically types that are used offensively.
16:13 (screaming)
16:14 - Dodge it!
16:15 (screaming)
16:18 - Fairy type moves hit Dark, Fighting,
16:20 and Dragon types super effectively.
16:23 And they also resist these types
16:25 in the case of the former two,
16:27 or are immune in the case of Dragon.
16:30 While Fairies can't hit their weaknesses
16:32 or Fire types very well,
16:34 they're still quite powerful offensively,
16:36 and they usually boast some impressive special defense.
16:40 Fairy Pokemon may often be cute,
16:43 but they're also incredibly strong.
16:45 (screaming)
16:47 - Number two, Steel.
16:52 Sometimes the best defense is having the best defense.
16:57 Despite the Steel type having three common weaknesses
17:00 in Fire, Ground, and Fighting,
17:02 that barely matters since it either resists
17:05 or is immune to 11 different types out of 18.
17:09 (screaming)
17:11 That means there's a good chance
17:15 that whatever's thrown at a Steel type
17:17 just isn't gonna hit much,
17:19 particularly when most of them
17:21 have spectacular physical defense.
17:23 For most of Pokemon's history,
17:26 Steel's offense wasn't particularly good,
17:28 since it was only good against Ice and Rock,
17:31 two types that other more offensively-based types hit better.
17:35 (screaming)
17:37 However, given that it's one of only two types
17:43 that's good against Fairy,
17:45 Steel has gotten quite the buff of late,
17:48 helping these Pokemon shine nearly as much
17:50 as their namesake.
17:56 - You did it, Lucario!

18:14 Number one, Dragon.
18:17 This awesome type has long been
18:19 at the top of Pokemon's food chain.
18:21 Not only do most of them have cool designs,
18:24 most dragons are either powerful legendaries
18:27 or nearly as strong regular Pokemon.
18:29 (screaming)
18:31 While they're only super effective against other dragons,
18:41 their overall strength and often varied move pools
18:45 help them blow away whatever's in front of them.
18:47 They even resist the trio of starter types,
18:50 Fire, Water, and Grass, as well as Electric.
18:54 Their only weaknesses for a long time
18:56 were themselves and Ice types,
18:58 which, as we established, isn't that great.
19:02 - I'm fire!
19:03 - Although Fairy's introduction has made Dragon types
19:11 not quite as overpowered,
19:13 since dragons are weak against them
19:15 and Fairy can't be hit by Dragon attacks,
19:18 we'd argue that the Dragon type
19:20 is still the best one overall.
19:22 - Dragon claw!
19:23 - Is there a Pokemon type you'd have ranked higher?
