00:00:00 being in the junior category, which is awesome to see in Canada.
00:00:02 We've fluctuated with how many teams, so eight is a great number.
00:00:05 We're seeing teams from the West Coast in Vancouver
00:00:09 all the way to here in Quebec and all the way in between.
00:00:12 So with the short program, we're going to be seeing five different elements
00:00:15 out there tonight.
00:00:17 They're recognizable mostly by their shape and the ice coverage.
00:00:20 So you'll be seeing the intersection element, which will be an angle.
00:00:24 You'll see a move element.
00:00:25 So that's where you're seeing the spirals in this short program.
00:00:28 We'll see a no hold element, a pivoting element, which will be a block
00:00:32 and also a twizzle element.
00:00:34 So those are the things to look out for.
00:00:36 Yeah, so difficult with so many skaters on the ice.
00:00:38 I've been watching the practice sessions.
00:00:40 It's just remarkable.
00:00:42 This sport is so difficult and it's underappreciated for how difficult it is.
00:00:46 But you'll see the beauty of it.
00:00:49 Definitely.
00:00:49 And I've been chatting with a few of the other commentators
00:00:52 from the other disciplines.
00:00:53 They've been loving watching the practices.
00:00:56 I think it's again, just so invigorating to have all of the disciplines together.
00:01:00 We saw this for the first time last season in Oshawa and just incredible
00:01:04 to not to skate Canada, to see this happening again.
00:01:07 I know federations around the world are looking to skate Canada
00:01:11 as leaders in this sport.
00:01:12 And to see all of the disciplines at nationals together is remarkable.
00:01:15 Well, we welcome synchronized skating here at the national championships.
00:01:18 Up next, the junior short program starts right now.

00:04:14 >> Welcome to the Winsport Arena here in Calgary.
00:04:18 The junior synchronized short program coming up in just a few moments.
00:04:23 Joined by Lisa Carriere in Montreal at her home.
00:04:25 Lisa, welcome to the broadcast.
00:04:27 Thank you for that opening.
00:04:28 That's a little chaotic, but that was kind of fun to do.
00:04:31 >> There's always so much, a lot to go into setting up the event.
00:04:35 But happy to plug some information in there.
00:04:37 >> That's great.
00:04:38 You've been watching the practice sessions over the last few days,
00:04:41 and which is great to be able to feed that to you, of course.
00:04:44 And eight teams here, as you mentioned in our opening, that's great to see that many teams.
00:04:48 Do you feel the progress of synchronized skating is coming along?
00:04:51 I mean, we've always been world leaders.
00:04:53 We have two-time world champions, for gosh sake.
00:04:56 But, you know, is the depth of synchronized skating growing here in Canada as we take a look
00:05:00 at the officials for this event?
00:05:04 >> Personally, I would say that absolutely the development of the sport is growing in Canada.
00:05:09 The depth of talent is incredible.
00:05:13 >> Yeah, it's so amazing to see the quality of every individual skater.
00:05:18 You'll see, you know, up to 16 skaters on the ice at the same time, you know,
00:05:22 mostly in beautiful unison, but the quality of their skating skills is improving all the time.
00:05:28 What has changed in the training of teams from now to just a few years ago?
00:05:34 >> Yeah, I think more and more, especially in Canada, there's more and more of an emphasis
00:05:39 and focus on the quality of skating skills.
00:05:42 And also the incorporation of different elements
00:05:45 from the different disciplines into synchronized skating.
00:05:48 So, you know, decades ago, it used to be you were just a synchronized skater, and now we're seeing,
00:05:54 you know, the skating skill of ice dance show up in synchro.
00:05:57 You're seeing free skate elements, jumps and spins show up in synchro.
00:06:02 So certainly the importance of skating skill is growing.
00:06:05 It's becoming more important.
00:06:06 And then with that, the level of the sport just keeps elevating.
00:06:10 >> Yeah, I love watching the sport.
00:06:11 It's a melting pot of everything good on the ice that's happening.
00:06:15 >> I love that.
00:06:17 >> And demonstrated by, you know, really wonderful skaters.
00:06:20 And the one thing I would want the audience to know, and of course, the audience has listened to this.
00:06:24 They're probably pretty well educated, know this sport well, how difficult it is.
00:06:29 It's so beautiful to watch.
00:06:30 It's so entertaining to watch.
00:06:32 It is so incredibly risky and difficult.
00:06:34 And I think it's an underappreciated sport.
00:06:37 But when people see it, and we're here with a lot of people that have never seen it before, they love it.
00:06:42 So let's keep it going and have the sport continue to grow in Canada.
00:06:48 >> I love that it is a combination of, as you mentioned, entertainment and beautiful skating
00:06:54 and telling a story, but there's also a technical aspect, of course.
00:06:58 One of the questions that came in from a non-synchro viewer earlier today was,
00:07:03 what is, like, what differentiates the short and free program?
00:07:06 Is it like ice dance with a theme or something that brings the programs together from different teams?
00:07:13 And just for the viewers that may not be synchro people out there, the short,
00:07:17 the difference between short and free is really the short program tends to be a more technical program.
00:07:21 Of course, it's shorter.
00:07:23 You'll see two minutes and 50-second length out here.
00:07:27 But they can pick their own theme, their own music.
00:07:30 It just -- it'll be more technical, whereas the free program, a little bit longer
00:07:34 and more creativity incorporated in.
00:07:36 >> Well, I got to say, we haven't had too many people in the audience yet in the junior week so far.
00:07:41 More here today, but they are loud.
00:07:43 They're really loud.
00:07:44 And they're really exciting and excited.
00:07:48 So that's one of the great aspects of synchronized skating.
00:07:50 It's a different environment than singles, pairs, and dance.
00:07:53 And it's really a thrill to watch.
00:07:55 Tell us a little bit about the warm-up now that we see on the ice.
00:07:59 >> Yeah. So unlike the other disciplines, in synchronized skating, you get --
00:08:03 the first team will have two minutes on the ice before their program starts.
00:08:07 So they will have had a practice on the practice rink earlier today, about 10 to 12 minutes.
00:08:11 But that's all they've been on the ice.
00:08:13 This is their second chance to get legs on the ice.
00:08:16 They'll have two minutes just to get into their knees and ankles before they set the program.
00:08:20 >> And our first team is going to be Nexus.
00:08:22 Tell us a little bit about this junior team.
00:08:24 >> Yeah. So we're starting off with a bang.
00:08:26 They are the national champions from 2023.
00:08:30 They will be skating their program tonight, telling a dark and powerful story,
00:08:34 seeking revenge after being wronged, and the satisfaction
00:08:38 that their character feels from their actions.
00:08:40 So as they take their opening position, just keep an eye out for their very first element.
00:08:44 It's the pivoting block.
00:08:46 Pretty easy to identify.
00:08:47 It's a block formation, which will be pivoting across the ice.
00:08:50 And they will be doing all of that on one foot.
00:08:53 >> So this is the short program coming up.
00:08:54 So this is the music, hit the road, Jack, right?
00:08:57 >> Absolutely.
00:08:58 >> Okay. That's it.
00:09:00 Nexus. Home club is Burlington Skating Center.
00:09:04 Team manager, Aaron Dessen.
00:09:06 And the coaches, Trish Perdue-Mills, and Yulia Mills-Bolton.
00:09:14 And as I mentioned, they'll skate the short program right now to hit the road, Jack.

00:12:23 >> Well, Nexus Jr. looks like a nice, clean program, Lisa.
00:12:29 >> That was a great skate from this team.
00:12:31 We saw them earlier in this week working on some of those elements,
00:12:35 and we saw them skate it well at this competition.
00:12:38 Well done.
00:12:40 [ Cheering ]
00:12:47 >> Well, it's an open draw, so as you mentioned, this team national champions last year, I think?
00:12:53 >> They were, yes.
00:12:54 >> And so they had to skate first, so it's an open draw for the short program.
00:12:58 Of course, it'll be reverse order in the free program.
00:13:02 >> But a good start for this competition.
00:13:05 I think it's important to remember for the viewers at home,
00:13:07 to have a national championship in January is very early for our teams.
00:13:12 The world championship at the junior level for synchronized skating is not until March 14th to 16th,
00:13:17 so there is a lot of time between our national championships and till worlds for these teams to continue growing and developing.
00:13:24 So what we see --
00:13:26 >> Go ahead.
00:13:27 >> Looking at their strong opening here, love that they get right into their character of being strong, fierce.
00:13:32 You feel the power right from the opening.
00:13:36 This is their first element, the pivoting block.
00:13:38 Look how straight those lines are.
00:13:40 You're looking to see those straight lines, good spacing in between the lines.
00:13:44 That will be shown and reflected in the positive GOE.
00:13:48 Here we're looking at the angle intersection with the feature, so one foot up and arms above the head.
00:13:53 Spiral element here.
00:13:54 This is new this year where everyone has to do a spiral.
00:13:57 They chose to do the second position with the leg lift there for a feature.
00:14:02 Again, throughout all of these elements, you want to see unison.
00:14:05 So even if they are syncopated, you want those groups to be unified within their movements,
00:14:11 making sure that legs go up and down at the same time.
00:14:14 Here in the no hold element, you want to see the rotation of those twizzles happening at the same time,
00:14:19 and that would all be reflected in positive GOE.
00:14:24 Looking at the team.
00:14:28 Lots of smiling faces here.
00:14:31 >> This team actually trains around 11 hours on the ice each week, five hours off the ice.
00:14:36 They have two skaters from Finland and one from Newfoundland.
00:14:40 >> And that is legal.
00:14:41 So tell us a little bit about that rule.
00:14:44 >> Yeah, so as long as your country releases you from their federation, you can compete for another country.
00:14:50 Obviously you would be joining the team and representing Canada, not your own home country,
00:14:54 but that is allowed and often seen in this sport.
00:14:58 >> Could a whole team shift?
00:15:01 >> I suppose.
00:15:02 No, no, no.
00:15:03 You can only have up to a quarter of the team that is from another country.
00:15:06 There is a rule there.
00:15:07 >> There you go.
00:15:08 >> Yeah.
00:15:09 Their goal is to make each performance better than the last one.
00:15:12 I think they will be happy with that performance.
00:15:15 Let's see the score.

00:15:21 They look thrilled with that.
00:15:22 They are the first team out.

00:15:36 >> On the ice right now from Ontario, gold ice.
00:15:41 Team manager Amy Shoemaker.

00:19:06 You can take a look and see how that changes from the time they finish their program to the time they are in the kiss and cry area.
00:19:12 Sometimes it might be higher at the end of the performance than at the end or vice versa depending on what elements need to be reviewed.
00:19:20 I mention that because in the no hold element you will see step base.
00:19:24 That is the short program for the junior level.
00:19:30 They call the element the features, the shapes they go through but not the steps themselves.
00:19:36 It is a little bit different.
00:19:40 >> There are five elements in this program.
00:19:44 Four of them are under review right now by the technical panel.
00:19:48 We saw the immediate call for the pivoting block look like a pivot block one.
00:19:54 They would have been attempting a level four.
00:19:58 Oftentimes if they are not getting those calls it is because of the quality of the turns.
00:20:02 Let's take a look at the review here.
00:20:06 Strong opening.
00:20:10 I love how Synchro has incorporated these strong and creative beginnings into their program.
00:20:14 The spiral.
00:20:18 A little bump here or collision in the intersection.
00:20:22 Each skater that falls gets a minus one.
00:20:26 That affects the GUI and program component scores as well.
00:20:30 These are the turns that have to be on correct edges in order for this element to get the full marks.
00:20:36 As skaters are touching down that is something the tech panel will be reviewing.
00:20:40 They start in one circle and they end in two circles in different directions.
00:20:46 That would be a change of configuration from one circle into two for a difficult feature.
00:20:52 Ideally the panel is looking to see are they maintaining speed throughout each element?
00:20:58 Are they gaining speed throughout each element?
00:21:02 If they are, they can reward positive GOEs for those elements.
00:21:06 I loved how tight they were here.
00:21:10 Look how close those skaters are.
00:21:14 They are not allowed to touch but the closer they are the harder it is.
00:21:18 That is what teams are going for.
00:21:22 A strong finish.
