00:00 What's the Order's real opinion on one of their members getting a little brassed
00:03 off from time to time?
00:05 What actually goes into creating the sacred Jedi weapon?
00:09 And were the Jedi the first to harness the power of the Force?
00:12 All of these questions and many more aspects of the Jedi way folks often misunderstand
00:17 will be put under the microscope in the coming entries my dear Padawans, Knights and Masters.
00:23 Gareth here from What Culture Star Wars and here are 10 things everyone always gets wrong
00:27 about the Jedi.
00:28 10. They're not allowed to show any emotion
00:32 Throughout the prequel trilogy in particular, George Lucas paints his Jedi Order as a stoic
00:37 group of Force-sensitive monks who simply refuse to showcase their faintest glimmer
00:42 of emotion out of fears that it may consume them.
00:45 Or at least that's what the average Star Wars watcher tends to take away from the days
00:49 of the Galactic Republic.
00:50 In truth though, the Jedi Order don't actually forbid their members from showcasing any and
00:54 all heightened emotions.
00:56 However, what is stressed from the minute a Force-sensitive soul begins their Jedi training
01:00 is that one must learn to control their emotions and feelings, finding peace in even the most
01:05 emotional circumstances.
01:07 The first line of the Jedi Codes mantra confirms the comforting thought process just about
01:11 every Jedi finds themselves falling back on, even in the darkest of times.
01:15 That being, there is no emotion, there is peace.
01:18 So far from outright denying their pupils the basic human response of being upset or
01:22 frustrated on occasion, it is evident the Jedi simply want those learning the ways of
01:27 the Force to not let said anger fester and grow out of control.
01:31 That can lead to Donning all black and a new shade of lightsaber, you know.
01:35 Number 9.
01:36 Luke Skywalker trained more than you'd think to initially become a Jedi
01:39 For decades now, fans have found themselves debating how in the holy hell the most famous
01:44 Jedi of them all, Luke Skywalker, was able to go from relative Force newcomer to a figure
01:49 capable of taking on Darth Vader in just a matter of weeks.
01:53 Now sure, the fact he was taken under the wing of two of the wisest Jedi in Star Wars
01:56 history likely didn't hurt his chances of taking to the ways of the Force quicker than
02:01 most.
02:02 But even with Luke being the son of Anakin Skywalker, and clearly a rather rapid learner,
02:06 getting to the level he did in only a few weeks did still feel like a bit of a stretch
02:10 to some.
02:11 In actual fact though, Skywalker didn't merely spend the three years in between the events
02:15 of A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back, twiddling his thumbs and staring at his lightsaber.
02:21 During that time, as revealed in comics, Luke was still chipping away at his combat training,
02:25 and even reading through some of Obi-Wan's journals as a way of absorbing as much as
02:29 he could about the Force.
02:31 And while he wasn't given substantial and consistent one-to-one lessons in the ways
02:35 of the Jedi until he landed on Dagobah, the galaxy's favourite Jedi was actually further
02:39 along his lightside path than many realised coming into his Yoda crash course.
02:44 Number 8.
02:45 Every lightside Force user classifies themselves as a Jedi.
02:48 For the longest time, it was assumed that all Force-sensitive folk who wished to operate
02:52 on the side of good must automatically fall into the category of Jedi.
02:57 As time has rolled by though, the grey area between Jedi and Sith has been explored more
03:01 and more in comics and on the big and small screen too.
03:04 And it's in this complex space within the galaxy far, far away, that some of the franchise's
03:10 most compelling and mesmerising characters have been born.
03:13 For the many folks to fight the good fight with a little help from the Force but not
03:17 as a Jedi Knight, former Jedi Order member Ahsoka Tano perhaps sits as the most notable,
03:22 with Anakin Skywalker's one-time Padawan still choosing to aid the Rebel Alliance and
03:26 forces of good, despite turning her back on an organisation she lost faith in during the
03:31 Clone Wars.
03:32 The sequel trilogy's Maz Kanata is another famous Force user helping our heroes, who
03:37 doesn't class herself as a Jedi by any means either.
03:40 Number 7.
03:41 Not every Jedi can become a Force Ghost
03:43 Throughout the original trilogy, every masterful Jedi or eventually redeemed Sith eventually
03:48 finds a way to make a glowing return to the big screen after death.
03:52 But while this may have seemed like something of a formality for all Jedi who passed from
03:56 the land of the living, becoming a Force Ghost isn't actually immediately guaranteed after
04:01 death.
04:02 That's because only those who complete a very specific piece of training or commit
04:05 a truly selfless sacrifice are granted the ability to stave off becoming entirely one
04:10 with the Force upon biting the dust.
04:13 Master Qui-Gon Jinn was the first Jedi within the Skywalker saga to discover this path towards
04:17 becoming a visual spirit and retaining his identity after death, but was unfortunately
04:22 unable to complete his training before falling to Darth Maul.
04:26 He was able to use his voice to guide Yoda towards fully discovering the secret to eternal
04:30 consciousness however, and later down the road as seen in the recent Obi-Wan Kenobi
04:35 series, Jinn does finally manage to learn what it takes to manifest physically in Force
04:39 Spirit form.
04:40 But if you were wondering why the likes of Mace Windu and many of the other notable prequel
04:44 Jedi in particular didn't find a way to visually fade back onto the scene later down
04:48 the road, it's largely because they simply didn't get a chance to learn how to before
04:53 becoming one with the Force.
04:56 Being a Jedi wasn't that common at all during the Clone Wars
04:59 There is no questioning the fact that Jedi Knights weren't anywhere near as rare in
05:03 the prequel era as they'd end up being around the time of the original trilogy and beyond.
05:08 But even before Order 66 purged much of the galaxy of its protectors, Jedi were still
05:12 actually far more uncommon than they're made to look in episodes 1 to 3 and the various
05:17 animated series.
05:19 Despite hitting the staggering number of 10,000 strong during their Galactic Republic heyday,
05:24 that number of Jedi absolutely pales in comparison to the overall population of sentient beings
05:29 in the galaxy far, far away.
05:32 Before Legends was eclipsed by canon upon Disney acquiring Lucasfilm, the galaxy's
05:36 population sat at 100 quadrillion.
05:39 And even in the canon age, it's said that there are millions of sentient species.
05:44 So that alone makes the idea of being one of the lucky 10,000 to step into a Jedi academy
05:49 feel like one hell of a lottery to win.
05:52 5.
05:53 Kyber Crystals don't actually power lightsabers
05:55 A common misconception when it comes to the majestic lightsaber is that said laser sword
06:00 is actually entirely powered by the sacred Kyber crystal that sits at its core.
06:05 While the precious and mystical crystal is still massively vital when it comes to the
06:09 construction of this highly personal blade, it's not actually the driving force behind
06:13 a lightsaber coming to life at the push of a button.
06:16 A Kyber crystal is known for being able to channel power from sources nearby, and said
06:21 crystal does exactly this within a lightsaber, converting the energy given off from a diatium
06:26 power cell, which pretty much acts as the weapon's reliable battery.
06:30 So simply loading up a lightsaber with a Kyber crystal isn't actually enough to power a Jedi's
06:34 unmistakable laser blade.
06:36 That being said, it is still the absolute heart of the legendary weapon, and is clearly
06:41 among the prettiest damn gems in the land.
06:44 4.
06:45 More Jedi survived Order 66 than you think
06:48 While it may have felt as though the only real Jedi to make it out of Order 66 alive
06:52 were the likes of Obi-Wan Kenobi and Yoda for an age, the years since the original and
06:56 prequel trilogies debut have brought with them far more survivors than many may have
07:01 realised was possible.
07:02 Though not technically sitting under the Jedi tree at the point of the great Jedi Purge's
07:06 beginnings, Ahsoka Tano managed to make it through the fateful command relatively unscathed.
07:11 Elsewhere, Rebels Kanan Jarrus, formerly known as Caleb Dune, managed to survive the clone
07:16 hunt thanks to his master's sacrifice.
07:18 A number of younglings and other fallen Jedi were also recruited to the Inquisitorious
07:22 Program post-Order 66.
07:25 Jedi Fallen Orders Sia Junda and Kal Kestis both managed to stay alive with the odds stacked
07:30 against them, and the Darth Vader comics even reveal that Jedi Temple Archives librarian
07:35 Jocasta Nu lived long enough to go toe-to-toe with the titular big bad himself.
07:40 Those are just a few of the names to have staved off death for various amounts of time
07:44 in the wake of this tragic taking down of the Order, proving that there is always more
07:48 hope out there than you perhaps initially thought.
07:51 3.
07:52 There isn't just one Jedi Council
07:54 Likely not helped by the fact that the average Star Wars supporter has likely only ever been
07:58 exposed to the version of the Council seen occupying a circular room on Coruscant in
08:02 the prequels, you'd be forgiven for assuming that said collection of Jedi Masters was the
08:06 only one of its kind within the galaxy.
08:09 In actual fact, what Force-loving folks are seeing in the prequel trilogy is the collection
08:13 of Masters known as the Jedi High Council, one of four different councils within the
08:18 Order's HQ on Coruscant.
08:20 That most commonly known council consisted of 12 Jedi Masters, one being the Grandmaster,
08:25 with this group governing the entire Order as a whole.
08:28 Elsewhere, the Council of First Knowledge were in charge of the curriculum of the Temple,
08:32 the Jedi Archives and gaining ancient Jedi wisdom.
08:36 The Council of Reconciliation worked with the Galactic Senate to resolve interplanetary
08:40 issues.
08:41 And lastly, the Council of Reassignment largely found themselves being tasked with the job
08:45 of reassigning Force-sensitive younglings with work should they not be granted the rank
08:49 of Padawan.
08:50 Someone's gotta do it, right?
08:52 So contrary to how it may seem, Yoda and the gang weren't the only ones who spent much
08:56 of their days scratching their chins on a comfy chair.
08:58 I do it too!
08:59 2.
09:00 They are not actually celibate
09:02 The Jedi bang too, and that's actually fine.
09:06 What isn't necessarily fine in the eyes of the Order is the idea of forming an emotional
09:10 attachment to a partner.
09:11 So in other words, a purely physical act of getting down to it in a casual sense isn't
09:16 seen as a rule-breaking offence in the slightest.
09:19 And as George Lucas himself would note to the BBC a few decades ago, Jedi Knights aren't
09:24 celibate.
09:25 The thing that is forbidden is attachments and possessive relationships.
09:29 Despite many being quick to assume that Anakin Skywalker's Rome antics with Padme Amidala
09:34 throughout the prequels was seen as an all-round big no-no in the eyes of his Jedi masters,
09:38 it was just the falling in love and attachment aspect of his forbidden relationship with
09:42 the one-time Queen that would have gotten him in trouble.
09:45 Turns out that Mark Hamill was also under the impression Luke Skywalker also didn't
09:49 exactly die a virgin in the galaxy far, far away either.
09:52 So who knows what steamy tales of the Jedi could be around the corner before long, eh?
09:57 1.
09:58 They weren't the first to wield the Force
10:00 Predominantly acting as the oldest wielders of the Force seen levitating rocks and blocking
10:04 blaster bullets with lightsabers on the big and small screen, it seemed pretty safe to
10:08 assume that the Jedi were the first real group to stumble upon the secret behind connecting
10:13 themselves with the almighty power surrounding them and all living things.
10:17 But long before the days of the Jedi Order or Sith, there was actually another group
10:21 of beings who discovered the ways of the Force and how to wield it.
10:25 These alien figures went by the name of the Zeffo, with the mystical entities very much
10:29 making their presence known in the Jedi Fallen Order video game.
10:33 Instead of referring to the ever-present power as the Force though, the ancient race called
10:36 it Lifewind, with only those classed as Zeffo Sages being able to control it in a way similar
10:42 to that of the Jedi and Sith later down the road.
10:44 Yet it wasn't too long before the race discovered the darker elements of this power, with the
10:48 dark side eventually taking hold of Sage Kujit in particular en route to him cruelly killing
10:53 all who opposed him.
10:54 Sound familiar?
10:55 By the time Kujit was no more, the race was on its knees and ultimately decided to flee
11:00 into the great unknown.
11:01 And all that before a single Jedi ever lifted a pebble, eh?
11:05 What a galaxy.
11:06 And that's our list!
