A 200-meter paved dragstrip in the town of Iruña, department of Alto Paraná in southern Paraguay, hosted the "Picadas Iruña", a famous drag racing event, organised since 2004 by the CESCDI (Centro de Eventos, Sociales, Culturales y Deportivos de Iruña). Although the races were reserved to cars, in 2021 the organizers invited a famous Brazilian tractor racer, Luiz Henrique Oening, 31-year-old from Maripá, state of Paraná, to make an exhibition of fast racing on the strip, at the wheel of his tractor dragster in which he had won many trophies and prestigious drag races in Brazil and abroad.
During his run, on Saturday, 13 November 2021, Luiz Henrique Oening lost control of his vehicle which, midway through the strip suddenly swerved at full speed towards the right side. The tractor dragster struck a wall and rolled over, coming to rest on its side in the middle of the track. Oening was thrown into the air when his safety belt broke.
The emergency crews reached the place of accident in a matter of seconds and the injured driver was rushed by ambulance to nearby Santa Rita hospital, where Luiz Henrique Oening was pronounced dead shortly after admission.
Different accounts indicated that Luiz Henrique Oening was taking part in the "Arrancada de Tractores", which was part of the programme of the Iruña meeting, driving a borrowed tractor; this has not yet been confirmed. Most likely he was not among the drivers in the entry list of the races and was guesting the event.
Nicknamed by friends as "Nego", Luiz Henrique Lang Oening was a member of the Equipe Malacabado of his hometown Maripá. A tractor dragster racing enthusiast, he served as President of the Automóvel Clube de Maripá (ACM). He is buried in the Cemitério de Maripá.
