00:04 >> My name is Trezor Senga.
00:06 I'm a Rwandan film producer/director.
00:09 I'm also the festival director and founder
00:11 of Mashariki African Film Festival,
00:14 as well as country representative
00:17 of East African Film Network.
00:19 [ Music ]
00:25 I got involved in film industry myself, was 2008.
00:30 I produced my first movie, was 2011, called Chora Chora.
00:36 The movie was produced in two cities, Gisenye and Rubabu.
00:42 It was about drug abuse and trafficking.
00:45 [ Music ]
00:52 We are at our ninth edition.
00:55 It's like nine years that Mashariki existing.
00:58 From that time up to now, we had a chance
01:02 to receive different professionals
01:04 in film industry, producers, directors.
01:07 [ Music ]
01:15 There is so many opportunity networking.
01:19 For this nine edition, we have like an exception that we have
01:26 our first Kigali International Content Market,
01:29 which is called Mashaket.
01:30 It's an opportunity that people can make a deal, you know,
01:34 about buying content, maybe to be broadcast on different TV,
01:38 national, international, sometime to facilitate
01:43 as well artists to create, to have an opportunity
01:48 to have their next project to be funded, you know,
01:50 because the many challenges that we have in our industry,
01:54 so many people have the ideas.
01:56 But having an idea, it's not enough without having someone
02:02 or having an idea of distribution.
02:05 [ Music ]
02:12 For this particular one, we have like already produced movies
02:17 and different producers that are ready to deal
02:21 with different stakeholders that will be interesting to--
02:24 will be interesting in the markets, to be attract them
02:28 with different products, to be pitched.
02:33 We have two kind of product this year.
02:37 We have people or filmmakers with ideas.
02:41 [ Music ]
02:48 >> Our programmation, we received 2,152 movies applied
02:56 for the competition, 2,152.
03:00 But unfortunately, we cannot select all those movies.
03:03 We selected only 85 movies to be compete
03:10 in this particular edition.
03:12 We have different categories.
03:15 We have feature film category
03:17 where we have different feature films
03:19 that will be competing in that session.
03:22 We have short film competition or short film category.
03:26 We have documentary category.
03:30 We have like TV series where we have one TV series also
03:35 and the international TV series which will be compete
03:39 in that category.
03:40 We have easy watch, local movie produced by local people.
03:44 Apart that, we have different workshop.
03:48 We have the animation workshop in cartoon.
03:53 How can I produce a cartoon movie?
03:55 How can I produce something like a short film
03:58 by using my phone in animation in 3D?
04:05 We have documentary workshop.
04:08 So many artists or filmmakers, they will be learning the
04:14 techniques of producing a good documentary.
04:17 We have the production workshop.
04:19 How can I produce my movie in low-budget production?
04:22 Because sometimes you think that to produce a movie,
04:25 you need a lot of money.
04:27 But there is so many ways to produce your film by using,
04:32 for example, few locations, one location.
04:36 So we'll be learning different technique
04:38 of low-budget production.
04:40 And we have also pitching workshop and master class.
04:45 [ Music ]
04:52 So we have Vigie here as sponsors.
04:54 We have RRDB in the London Film Office.
04:56 We have Warundu Bicel International.
04:58 We have European Union.
05:00 We have Elika Pekka, different restaurants,
05:04 different hotel, Onomo.
05:06 And I think without them,
05:10 we cannot succeed organize this particular event.
05:13 As you know, the event, there is so many things to do maybe
05:20 for us to achieve and organizing,
05:23 organize a festival like this.
05:26 We need a lot of things, financially, in kind, you know.
05:31 So we cannot succeed anything without our sponsors,
05:35 which I take the opportunity to thank them
05:37 because without them, we cannot even have this particular
05:42 experience of nine years experience.
05:44 [ Music ]
05:50 First of all, we need to establish Kigali
05:56 as a shooting destination where we can attract a lot
06:01 of co-production in our country.
06:02 As long as we have so many co-production,
06:05 we can easily attract or sell our locations
06:12 or bring money economically in our country.
06:15 And even our technician will be having a lot of experience.
06:19 [ Music ]
06:26 What I can say, I can invite so many people as much as possible.
06:31 The festival is starting tomorrow, 25th,
06:33 up to 1st of December.
06:34 The opening is Kankigali and the market will be taking place
06:38 for three days from 28th and 30th of November
06:42 in the Kigali Exhibition Culture Village, Kankigali.
06:46 And every evening, we have nice movie, good programmation
06:50 in the Central Cinema where we have African premiere,
06:53 African movies which help African storyteller
06:58 to tell their own story.
07:00 So which is the good thing of Masariki, we need to promote
07:03 and emphasize and push African storytellers
07:09 to speak their own stories, you know.
07:11 And showing Africa in the future, futuristic movies
07:17 which we are pushing, we are telling so many artists
07:21 to show the new Africa, the new Africa good perspective
07:26 because people always think that Africa, people are poor,
07:29 Africa is not advanced, you know.
07:31 So we need to show, we are emphasizing
07:34 in the futuristic movies which show Africa
07:37 for the next generation,
07:39 Africa as film destination in the future.
