Arizona offensive coordinator and former USC assistant Brennan Carroll talks about the 2004 National Championship game at Alamo Bowl Media Days on Dec. 26, 2023.
Transcript
00:00 Question for Brennan.
00:01 A couple of us have been out here in the audience
00:03 have been on the OU football beat since 2004.
00:07 I wonder if you could kind of recount
00:10 what you remember about that game, what your role was,
00:12 and that night in Miami.
00:16 Yeah, that's taking it back a little bit.
00:19 Yeah, I was coaching tight ends back then.
00:22 And we had a pretty good team coming into it
00:24 and faced a really good team.
00:26 And we were able to get up early and withhold the lead.
00:33 But the atmosphere going into that game,
00:36 I'm glad that these guys have got a chance to experience
00:39 big time bowl game like this and get a feel for it
00:42 because it's a special memory, something I'll always cherish.
00:45 And I know these guys will with this game as well.
00:48 So it's a great program we're going against.
00:51 They've had a lot of success throughout the years.
00:55 And we're trying to get to that level.
00:59 Just a quick follow.
00:59 I'm sure you've told this story a million times,
01:01 but maybe not to Oklahoma media.
01:04 Some of the lessons maybe that you've
01:06 learned from your dad over the years in the coaching business.
01:09 Yeah, just really consistency and balance.
01:13 As you guys were talking about Noah
01:15 being a consistent leader like he is.
01:18 And we try to be really consistent as a staff.
01:22 We want to keep the messaging the same,
01:24 the preparation the same.
01:26 Just being the same guy, same coach day in and day out.
01:31 So that these guys can form a trust,
01:33 form a reliance on what we're telling
01:36 and what we're teaching them.
01:38 And these guys are a big reason why we're here today.
01:41 It's a fantastic group of guys.
01:43 Not just the guys on the stage, although I do like you guys.
01:46 You guys are pretty cool.
01:48 We've got a great group of kids.
01:49 Really lucky to take this team into this game
01:53 And can't wait for the challenge.
