00:00 Hi, my name is Goran Stolevski. I'm the writer/director of Would You Look At Her,
00:03 which will be premiering as part of the International Shorts Competition at the
00:06 2018 Sundance Film Festival. Would You Look At Her is a story about a tomboy who's been
00:11 growing up in a small town in Macedonia. She's having trouble at home, she's having trouble at
00:16 school, and then she spots the potential solution to all her troubles in a church ritual that takes
00:21 place once a year, as it has been for centuries upon centuries. The problem is that that ritual
00:27 is only open to men, so she has to figure out a way to take part. I would describe the film as a
00:33 warm-hearted feminist assault on the patriarchy. Others might describe it differently, and that's
00:40 completely fine. We're very open to discussion. This story, though, does fit a general pattern
00:46 in terms of my body of work. It's actually now my 24th short film, and most of these films revolve
00:52 around headstrong women. Why that is is open to question. I guess I could point out, though, that
00:58 I've been suffering from an acute case of diva worship since about age two, just like every
01:05 other gay boy, I suppose. And generally, gender issues tend to animate me and motivate me to tell
01:12 a lot of stories. I do feel like misogyny and sexism are kind of at the root of most evil and
01:16 injustice in the world, but especially in the Balkan regions, where I spend part of my time.
01:21 So I do tend to be drawn to very strong female characters. And the other thing that was exciting
01:26 about this film was the way that the story revolved around a queer antihero. In Macedonia
01:33 and in most countries in the world, you don't really tend to see queer people as antiheroes
01:39 or heroes or characters with any kind of dignity in general. So pretty much the whole way through
01:44 making this film and up until this moment right now, I felt like we were getting away with
01:49 something. And now I feel like we have gotten away with something. And that something is about to
01:53 premiere at the Frequent Sundance Film Festival. So I could not be more excited,
01:57 and I can't wait to join everyone there in January. Thanks.
