00:00 In Leh Ladakh, tremors of an earthquake were felt early in the morning of 26 December 2023.
00:08 As per the National Centre of Seismology, the earthquake reported was around 4.33 am
00:13 on Tuesday morning with a magnitude of 4.5 on the Richter scale that hit Leh and Ladakh.
00:19 The epicentre of the earthquake was at a depth of 5 km which is not very deep, with the tremors
00:24 occurring at 34.73 latitude and 77.07 longitude.
00:29 The agency also mentioned that a 3.7 magnitude earthquake also struck the Richter scale near
00:33 Kishtwar district in Jammu Kashmir.
00:35 According to the NCS, this earthquake happened prior to the Leh earthquake at around 1.10
00:40 in the morning at a depth of 5 km.
00:43 This recent earthquake activity is occurring following a series of tremors that were felt
00:48 across Leh and Ladakh.
00:50 In the past week, Kargil experienced a 5 magnitude earthquake followed by a 3 magnitude earthquake
00:55 in Leh Ladakh.
00:56 Unfortunately, there have been no casualties or property damage from these seismic activities
01:01 in the mountainous regions.
01:03 For the unaware, the Himalayan belt, also known as the Eurasian belt, is prone to earthquakes.
01:08 This tectonic collision often releases a large amount of energy, causing disturbance in the
01:12 area.
01:14 Many times, these tremors are of very low intensity and are not felt, while some are
01:18 so intense that earth cracks on several fronts.
