Browns DE Myles Garrett talks with reporters ahead of the teams Sunday match-up vs the Texans.
Transcript
00:00 St. Louis is in Texas and nobody's house is in your realm.
00:03 What do you think about that?
00:04 Public insurance.
00:06 I said it to him personally, but I want to say it publicly.
00:13 It means a lot.
00:14 It means a lot to me, but from them,
00:16 I want them to know this.
00:19 It's not for me. It's for this team.
00:21 It's to help us win and continue our success.
00:25 It's not about the awards or the praise or the accolades.
00:31 We want to do this together and take all those issues on.
00:35 [inaudible]
00:46 I think Kace is a great guy.
00:49 A lot of fun.
00:50 The years he was here, he's still a heck of a talent.
00:55 He's clever.
00:56 He goes out there and joins the game every time he's up on the field.
01:00 He has practice with him.
01:02 I know he'll have a lighthearted demeanor.
01:05 We'll have to rub the face off, but it's a know-how.
01:10 [inaudible]
01:21 I don't recall signing on any dotted lines.
01:25 If he's got the paper, he can show it to me on Sunday.
01:27 We might be able to work something out.
01:29 But until then, I think I might have to do the dirty work.
01:33 [inaudible]
01:40 As far as feeding blockers and having success against my matchup,
01:49 I think, yes, I'm as successful as I have been in the past.
01:54 But that doesn't mean I can't take it to another level.
01:57 That doesn't mean I can't find ways to improve
02:00 or help improve the people around me, my teammates.
02:03 And I've got to continue to find a way to make more explosive plays.
02:08 That's been, I don't want to say lacking, but a little bit of a shortage
02:14 up late, but I've got to continue to get the ball for us
02:17 and make those plays on defense.
02:20 [inaudible]
02:27 Absolutely.
02:28 We focus on using motivation only for myself, for my teammates.
02:33 I'm definitely not perfect at it.
02:35 They're making plays.
02:36 They're doing things in spite of what's going on on either end.
02:42 So those guys are making most of the opportunities that are presented
02:45 to them with those one-on-one matchups, and I'm trying to use that
02:49 as motivation to fight through those chips or doubles or triple teams.
02:54 Do you play like you don't get a call or you're trying to fight
02:57 through a double team you can't get through?
02:59 It just seems like the next snap you have a little extra there.
03:04 I don't play angry.
03:05 I play inspired.
03:07 I might get frustrated a little bit, but no, I'm going to have a chat
03:10 out there at anything or anyone.
03:13 [inaudible]
03:21 I think he's one of the best tacklers in the league, left or right.
03:25 If you want to say off of the linemen, you can say that as well.
03:27 The guys, he's a special talent.
03:30 He has great technique.
03:32 He's an exceptional athlete, and the guys, the guy has it all.
03:37 So I'm looking forward to the matchup much like it was earlier this year
03:41 against Trent.
03:42 We've had a lot of run-ins from college up to now, and it will be fun
03:47 to test our mettle against each other again.
03:50 What can you set those matchups apart when you're talking to a team?
03:54 Like you say, going all the way back to college, what is it specifically
03:58 about Larry that makes it so challenging?
04:05 [inaudible]
04:09 We continue to grow.
04:11 Like I was saying for myself, we will continue to grow and find something
04:16 else within our game, within our bag to keep testing each other,
04:21 keep the opposition off balance.
04:26 Hopefully it swings one way more than the other this weekend,
04:30 but he continues to get better and better.
04:34 We have to keep on matching that intensity and raising each other's spirit.
04:38 [inaudible]
04:50 I mean, those are the things that really excite me.
04:54 Most of the time I go in kind of calm, composed, but I can't lie.
05:00 Most of the time when I get those kind of matchups,
05:03 I get butterflies before knowing that this is going to be a fun one.
05:06 No matter how it turns out, I can give 100%, and he's going to be able
05:13 to fight through everything I've got.
05:15 No matter what the statute says, it's going to be a premier matchup.
05:21 [inaudible]
05:24 It's not all about saying, and you're affecting the game in a bunch of ways.
05:28 How much is it for a father or a mother like you when you go period
05:34 without having a lot of sex?
05:36 I mean, if I count the statute, so it never existed.
05:41 [inaudible]
05:48 Say about an hour, an hour after the game.
05:52 Then I get to sit down and meet my family, and I'll see their smiling faces,
05:55 and I get to enjoy hearing you all talk about what the best thing since sliced bread
06:00 that we won this weekend, we got a little streak going.
06:03 Then I just think about how blessed and fortunate I am with all the things
06:06 I have around me and the people I have around me.
06:08 I just anticipate some rolls off the gut, stuff like that.
06:12 It'll come and go.
06:14 I continue to rush the way I know.
06:16 I'm trying to improve upon that.
06:18 They're going to continue to slide, chip, and throw all their tools at me.
06:24 The guys on the defensive line, the linebackers, safety, rubbers,
06:28 they're going to continue to play for us.
06:31 That means so much more, especially when it results in one.
06:35 [inaudible]
06:44 If history is any teacher, probably not.
06:48 But I know he relishes the opportunity to go one-on-one, and so do I.
06:52 I look forward to it, whether there's a chip or there's a double or it's just him.
06:57 We'll see what happens, but I'm expecting all of that.
07:00 [inaudible]
07:09 I think I should stay focused on what's ahead of me.
07:14 I don't know how things work as far as voting and candidacy.
07:18 I can make sure this team continues to win, and I continue to be a monumental part of that.
07:23 [inaudible]
07:29 Not an easy road trip to make.
07:32 You go down that knowledge, you have to maybe have a little extra focus,
07:37 a little extra attention to detail this particular road trip.
07:40 I make that road trip every summer.
07:42 The guys need to learn how to do it.
07:44 They can follow my example, but we've got to learn to lock in when we go down the road.
07:50 When we go down the road, we've kind of been at our worst compared to being at home
07:54 and excelling on offense and defense.
07:57 We've got to continue to put up this momentum that we have right now and start fast,
08:03 jump on quickly, get that first punch, and I think that'll show us that this is just like playing off.
08:10 There's really no difference.
08:11 Take the clot out of it, still playing the same game,
08:14 and we've got to keep that level of focus and attention to detail.
08:18 [inaudible]
08:26 Yeah, we've talked about it.
08:27 The last time we played up to our standard, even more close to it, was the Ravens,
08:33 and that was still a rough one for the defense.
08:37 We have a lot to improve on.
08:40 We have a lot to improve, and so we want to, you know,
08:45 have to have the doubt and get back to how we know we can play ball on the man away.
08:51 [inaudible]
08:58 I've got to say, to the playoffs, I want to hold off.
09:01 And, you know, a couple of plays away from, you know, beating that team at Kansas City,
09:07 I feel like I came up short.
09:10 We all came up short essentially, but I know there were some players I ruffed on the board.
09:14 I want to show that I'm more of a player than I was at that point in my game
09:21 and look forward to the opportunity to get there and continue to win.
09:25 [inaudible]
09:35 I mean, I feel like we say this every week.
09:38 We're losing leaders left and right, especially this one with one of our big leaders on defense.
09:46 He's going to continue to be with us and, you know, lead us to a different platform
09:54 and a different space on the field.
09:56 I think he'll accept that challenge.
10:00 He'll want to be there and still take hold of these young guys and make the most of the opportunity.
10:06 I know he's been through a lot in his relatively short career, and he's prepared to come back.
10:14 But he's going to channel that energy into helping us.
10:19 [inaudible]
10:27 How do you approach your leadership role in this team?
10:30 Is it different than previous years?
10:33 I just treat them all like they're my kids.
10:35 [laughter]
