Browns Practice Report December 21, 2023
Transcript
00:00 Welcome on in Browns fans we
00:11 are back with our latest
00:12 practice report for Browns
00:14 digest in the Browns digest
00:15 YouTube page I'm Spencer German
00:17 and coming to you live from
00:18 Maria with the latest from
00:21 Thursday session as the team
00:22 continues to get ready for that
00:24 matchup with the Houston Texans
00:25 coming up this weekend on
00:27 Christmas Eve now it's
00:28 important to know Wednesday the
00:31 team did return to the practice
00:32 field but the practice was
00:33 essentially a walk through it
00:36 wasn't the full fledged
00:38 practice as you normally get on
00:39 a Wednesday so all the injury
00:41 report designations that were
00:42 put out there there was some
00:43 conversation about Joe Flacco
00:45 popping up on it with a calf
00:46 injury not the huge not not as
00:49 big of a deal as maybe was made
00:50 to seem because the team didn't
00:51 technically practice on
00:53 Wednesday now as far as
00:55 Thursday's concerned it was a
00:56 normal practice the guys who
00:58 are missing today include Joel
00:59 Antonio Anthony Walker one
01:01 Thornhill Jordan can I shake and
01:03 Oboe won't well for that last
01:06 one team still hasn't given
01:08 official word on his status in
01:09 terms the rest season we know
01:11 he's doing with a pec injury
01:12 but he continues to not be a
01:14 practice while they decide if
01:15 it is a season ending injury or
01:17 if there's a chance you can
01:18 return at some point this
01:19 season meanwhile Joel Antonio
01:21 deal with that back injury is
01:22 one of the more concerning
01:23 injuries of note to this point
01:26 he talked about where he was
01:27 at status wise he did note that
01:29 he hasn't practiced quite yet
01:31 this week but here's him from
01:33 his own mouth on just where his
01:35 status is after he left Sunday's
01:37 game over the against the Bears
01:38 with that back. I've not
01:40 practice this weekend- so we're
01:43 so worried that I did just get
01:45 done get a little run. Out
01:46 there and- we're progressing
01:48 really well you know so we'll
01:50 see how it goes tomorrow but-
01:52 you know from where I was
01:53 Sunday Monday where now it's
01:56 been a positive- we're going to
01:59 take a look at. It is something
02:01 you think about but- every game
02:03 for the playoff game for us
02:04 we're trying to win as many as
02:05 we can. So for me if I if I
02:07 could play I'm not going to be
02:08 out there and try to help the
02:10 team but- that's something that
02:11 you know the training staff and
02:12 the coaching staff I can think
02:14 about but- I think if you're
02:15 healthy and you can. You can
02:17 help the team. I mean you're
02:19 not going to. True true damage
02:21 yourself I think I think most
02:22 guys want to be out there.
02:24 Yeah second half of that I
02:25 actually asked some point
02:26 blank you know how do you kind
02:28 of manage. This idea that
02:29 you're close to closing a
02:30 playoff spot there are eight
02:32 different scenarios in which
02:33 that could happen as we found
02:34 out this week from. From the
02:35 NFL. But you know you want to
02:37 play and be out there for your
02:39 team but also understanding you
02:40 don't want to hurt yourself
02:41 more. And risk being out for a
02:43 longer period of time
02:44 especially. If this team is
02:46 trying to win is poised to.
02:48 Make a playoff run so I thought
02:50 what he said made a lot of
02:51 sense you you're going to try
02:52 to be out there unless it is
02:53 going to be a- something that
02:54 can hinder you a little bit
02:55 more that you could re injure
02:56 or worse. And you know he's
02:58 he's working through that
02:59 process trying to get back out
03:00 the first team so. Nothing
03:02 overly concerning in terms of
03:03 the Tony O. sounds like it's
03:05 just kind of the- normal hair
03:06 and tear football that can
03:07 happen especially to an
03:08 offensive lineman. And he's
03:09 gonna try his best to be out
03:10 there but in a year that's
03:12 obviously been plagued. By so
03:14 many different assortment of
03:15 injuries. It's good to know
03:16 that there's nothing season
03:17 ending or too serious. In
03:19 regards to Joe but Tony now.
03:21 Stay on the offense as far as
03:23 the ball and stay with the on
03:24 the injury front because- I
03:26 mentioned a little bit earlier
03:27 I know the Joe Flacco
03:28 conversation he popped up on
03:29 Wednesday's injury report. The
03:31 calf injury he was technically
03:33 limited had they had actually
03:34 ran. A typical Wednesday
03:36 practice. What Alex van Pelt
03:39 offense coordinator spoke with
03:40 him today. And he made it
03:42 pretty clear. He's not worried
03:44 about any long term
03:45 ramifications with that doesn't
03:46 appear to be anything too
03:47 serious so. The breaks there's
03:49 nothing to freak out about at
03:50 this point. Joe Flacco was
03:52 healthy he was out there today.
03:54 My Twitter handle at Spencer to
03:55 underscore I shared a video of
03:57 him out there throwing like he
03:58 normally would do on a day of
03:59 practice. And he looked just
04:01 fine so. Didn't necessarily we
04:03 don't know who's limited again
04:04 yet today. But at this point he
04:06 looks like he's he's trending
04:07 in the right direction that
04:08 there's nothing really. Of
04:10 concern so sleep easy rest easy
04:13 Browns fans. I know that
04:15 quarterback position has been a-
04:17 a quarterback our carousel if
04:19 you will. Of different players
04:20 going in and out but it doesn't
04:21 seem like we need to sound the
04:22 alarms. In regards to Joe
04:23 Flacco another thing's been
04:25 going on throughout this week
04:26 guys. Has just been the miles
04:29 Garrett defensive player of the
04:30 year campaign Kevin Stefanski
04:32 said on Monday. That he
04:33 believed miles Garrett was the
04:35 best player in the NFL. He
04:37 mentioned how we love to get
04:39 caught up in the sack numbers
04:40 some of these statistical
04:41 things. But that that doesn't
04:43 always tell the full story of.
04:44 How good of a season a player
04:46 special the defense side of the
04:48 ball and in his position as a
04:49 defensive ender of course.
04:51 A pass rusher is really having.
04:53 That politicking continued
04:55 today defensive coordinator Jim
04:57 Schwartz he chimed in on the
04:59 miles Garrett conversation and
05:01 actually. Put him in a pretty
05:03 elite group of guys that he
05:04 compared to in terms of the
05:06 type of player that he is and
05:08 how important he is- each and
05:10 every single week for the
05:11 Cleveland Browns. Of course-
05:15 you know I. I think I might
05:17 have said that may have said
05:18 this before but- in my mind the-
05:21 definition of a great defense
05:23 or great player. Is when an
05:26 opponent starts their game plan
05:29 with- we're- we're going to
05:32 take care of this guy. Right
05:34 like we're not gonna let this
05:35 guy beat us. And he's still
05:37 able to be effective and he's
05:39 still able to- you know to play
05:41 at a high level. So there there
05:43 are a lot of guys that can make
05:45 plays when they don't see
05:46 attention and things like that
05:47 but- you know. Career I've I've
05:50 really seen it from three
05:51 players I've seen it for miles
05:53 I've seen it from Calvin
05:54 Johnson. And I was a young
05:58 quality. But there was only
06:00 first three years of his career
06:01 but assault from Ray Lewis also.
06:04 Guys that every week the
06:06 opponent said this guy's not
06:08 going to be just in every week
06:09 that that that player still
06:11 made plays. So you know miles
06:13 fits in that category- affects
06:16 the game. Helps other people
06:18 make plays. You know I think
06:21 you could we we could have a
06:22 two hour press conference of-
06:24 the ways that he affects the
06:26 game. Yeah Ray Lewis Calvin
06:29 Johnson that's a pretty elite
06:31 company for miles Garrett to be
06:33 put up against and certainly
06:35 come from James Schwartz a guy
06:36 who's been in this league is
06:37 accomplished a lot he's won
06:38 Super Bowl as the Eagles
06:40 defensive coordinator not too
06:41 long ago. Yeah obviously with
06:42 the Lions head coach took the
06:43 Lions something that was
06:45 thought of. As impossible he
06:47 took the Detroit Lions the
06:48 playoffs and stop their drought
06:49 at the time. He has seen some
06:51 things he's been around this
06:52 league. So for him to put him
06:54 in that tier player to hall of
06:55 famers that he's comparing to
06:56 the certainly saying a lot. We
06:58 know miles Garrett's head on a
06:59 similar trajectory whether he
07:01 wins defensive player the year
07:02 or not this year. He is a
07:03 bona fide hall of famer for the
07:05 Cleveland Browns when he does
07:07 eventually hang them up but it
07:08 in the in the present. As he's
07:10 helping the Browns to lock up
07:11 a playoff birth. As he
07:12 continues his pursuit of that
07:13 award that has eluded him at
07:15 this point his career. He's
07:16 get a lot of praise from those
07:18 close to him around him. And
07:20 that also continued. For even
07:23 special teams coordinator Bob
07:24 event road had some good things
07:26 to say about miles Garrett. Now
07:27 what I want to be clear the
07:28 first part of this clip. He was
07:29 asked the question specifically.
07:31 About Dustin Hopkins. And
07:33 whether or not he thought
07:34 Dustin Hopkins deserve to be
07:35 the quote. Team MVP. And he
07:39 kind of set aside his special
07:41 team's biases. To offer up some
07:43 praise. For miles Garrett.
07:45 Special teams coordinator you
07:46 been chomping on the
07:47 conversation here's what he had
07:48 to say. The execution has been
07:50 at a high level and-
07:52 fortunately he's made a lot of
07:54 his kicks and- like I said
07:56 before I think he's done. A
07:58 tremendous job for our team.
08:00 And the confidence he has in
08:02 our coaching staff the head
08:03 coach GM owners. You know he's
08:06 he's earned every every bit of
08:08 credit he deserves and I think
08:09 he should you know. He should
08:11 really be. In my mind. You know
08:15 get every accolade you could
08:16 get I think he's he's done a
08:18 really good job he's earned it
08:19 so. He's been great for us.
08:22 MVP this team. Jeez I mean I
08:26 probably shouldn't even say
08:27 like answer that question but
08:28 I'll I'll answer for you. I
08:30 mean. Obviously I. Also Dustin
08:34 aside I would say ninety five.
08:37 I mean he's just. Ridiculous
08:40 I've never seen a player. I've
08:42 been a league since two
08:42 thousand five. I've never been
08:44 around a football player like
08:46 that guy. It's unbelievable and
08:48 I think when you see him when
08:49 you actually get to see him in
08:50 person. It's just looks way
08:53 different and- to me he's
08:56 hands down it's not even a
08:57 question like he's hands down
08:59 the best football player in the
09:00 league. Like to me it like
09:02 defensively he's he's hands
09:04 down the best. There's no one
09:06 that's even remotely close to
09:07 him my opinion. I think he's
09:10 just a great guy. So high
09:12 praise all around this week for
09:13 miles Garrett as his teammates
09:15 coaches. Continue to sing his
09:16 praises and the fact that
09:18 Bubba Ventura even felt. He
09:19 needed to jump in on the
09:20 conversation is pretty telling
09:21 as well well we'll find out if
09:23 miles Garrett can inch closer to
09:24 potentially. Winning defense a
09:26 player of the year he's
09:27 obviously on a four sack
09:29 drought. Or a four sack drought.
09:32 I guess a drought of four
09:33 straight games without a sack.
09:35 There we go that's what we were
09:36 looking for- and he hopes to
09:38 snap that this weekend against
09:39 the Browns. And if he can do
09:40 that it would obviously help
09:41 his cause. But I will say like
09:43 right now. Based on all the
09:45 odds out there he's second to
09:46 Micah Parsons who's actually
09:48 below him in sacks so it does
09:49 seem like. The other powers
09:51 that be are are interpreting
09:52 this award is more than just
09:53 sacks and more that was than
09:55 just statistics. But certainly
09:56 the Browns and anybody here at
09:58 within the organization trying
10:00 to plead their case. For miles
10:01 to be worthy of the award. I do
10:04 want to give you one last no
10:06 unrelated to the Browns
10:08 specifically but their opponent
10:09 the Houston Texans. Their star
10:11 quarterback rookie of course
10:13 the rookie phenom CJ Stroud who
10:14 we're all familiar with here in
10:15 Ohio having played at Ohio
10:17 State. Did not practice once
10:19 again today for Houston still
10:20 through going through the
10:21 concussion protocols trying to
10:23 get cleared but not quite there
10:24 yet and obviously the reporting
10:26 early this week. Has been that
10:28 he likely will not suit up. For
10:30 that match up with the Cleveland
10:32 Browns so if that's the case.
10:34 You'll see old friend case
10:35 keen about their former
10:36 Cleveland Brown. Has some
10:37 familiarity obviously with his
10:39 days from playing with Kevin
10:40 Stefanski both in. Minnesota and
10:42 here in Cleveland. But that's
10:44 looking more more likely that
10:46 that'll be a quarterback match
10:47 be Joe Flacco. Versus case
10:49 keen about Sunday so we'll see
10:50 how it all kind of transpires.
10:52 I will be back in Berea
10:53 tomorrow with you to give you
10:54 the latest. As we turn the
10:56 corner into the weekend and get
10:57 you. A little bit closer to
10:59 that Christmas Eve match up
11:00 with with with Houston. In the
11:02 meantime be sure to keep on
11:03 phone along with all things
11:04 Cleveland Browns both right
11:06 here. On the clear the Browns
