Will Rooney reports from Goodison Park as the Toffees exit the Carabao Cup
Transcript
00:00 Full time here at Goodson Park and heartbreaking one for Everton, they go out to the Carabao Cup.
00:06 On penalties at the hands of Fulham, one-one draw at the end of the game, real tight games to be quite honest with you.
00:12 Everton had sustained pressure in the second half, they just couldn't make it count enough really.
00:18 They really put Fulham under pressure, a lot of balls into the box but they just lacked that little bit of quality in the final third.
00:25 They have had in recent weeks obviously four straight Premier League victories.
00:30 First half started fairly cagey, both sides feeling each other out and Everton started to build a little bit of momentum.
00:37 Dwight McNeil flashed an effort wide, Jarrett Bramfway filling in at left back as a header when he was arriving at the back post that was saved.
00:45 But then Fulham took the league in the 41st minute.
00:49 Fairly fortuitous when Anthony Robertson crossed and pulled the ball back from the byline and it ricocheted off Michael Keane.
00:58 Jordan Pickford was helpless really in the Everton goal.
01:01 Fulham hadn't had a shot on target at that point, William flashed a free kick not too far past the post but Fulham hadn't really threatened before they took the lead.
01:11 Second half Everton came out and Jack Harrison had a real wicked effort that just went wide.
01:16 Then Alex Owobi on his return to Gleston Park after leaving the club in the summer, tested Jordan Pickford from distance.
01:22 Everton started to get on top and brought Bessel on.
01:25 He added a lot more energy, stretched the defence with some of his runs and it was him who got the equaliser in the 81st minute.
01:33 A scruffy goal undoubtedly but Everton didn't care.
01:37 Cross coming to the box, cleared by Fulham.
01:40 Everton kept it alive, James Garner had a shot.
01:43 Ricocheted off another Fulham shirt and Bessel pounced to the loose ball and headed past Bernt Leno.
01:49 That made for a tense final 10 minutes, really end to end stuff.
01:54 Neither side could find the finish.
01:56 Arnav Danduma flashed a volley just wide of the target.
02:00 Superbly hit from Danduma, really unlucky.
02:03 Excellent technique and then Fulham had a shot blocked through Robinson at the back post when they put the ball in.
02:09 Ultimately the game went to penalties and it was who held the nerve.
02:15 Unfortunately for Everton it was Fulham but Everton twice had it in their hands to win the shootout.
02:20 The first seven penalties were scored then Fulham missed and Arnav stepped up but his penalty was a poor one.
02:26 He'll regret how he hit that. He should have just went for power.
02:30 He tried to place it into the bottom corner and fool Fulham keeper Bernt Leno but it didn't work.
02:36 If Jordan Pickford had saved the next penalty, Everton would have won it.
02:40 Pickford's not really his fault, he's already saved one. Couldn't get his hand to it.
02:44 The penalty shootout went to sudden death. James Tarkowski and James Garner scored for Everton.
02:49 Then Idrissa Garner again stepped up and I thought was absolutely superb to be honest with you throughout the game.
02:56 Finishing is not his forte and he struck the post and Fulham went in there, took advantage and moved into the semifinals of the competition for the first time.
03:05 Disappointing one for Everton but ultimately their aim this season is to stay up from the start.
03:12 They should be 10th, they should be well clear if they haven't had that point of deduction.
03:16 Now we've got to make sure that doesn't end that momentum they are building in the Premier League.
03:21 That good form that they are in in the Premier League.
03:23 Go to Tottenham at the weekend, Everton again missing some key players tonight.
03:27 Abdelhaid Skore absent, he'll also be missing against Tottenham.
03:30 Vitaly Mikhelenko another unavailable because of growing problems.
03:34 So Everton had to again tweak the team with Jarrod Bramford playing at left back and James Garner playing a bit higher up the pitch.
03:42 So difficult one for Everton tonight but ultimately can't let this impact their Premier League momentum that they've built.
03:50 Everton out of the carabao cup on penalties at the hands of Fulham.
