00:00 All right, so sometimes in church,
00:03 it's just good to get real, right?
00:04 How many of you would agree?
00:05 So what I wanna do today is,
00:07 with your permission, I'm gonna get kinda real.
00:11 Do you think you can handle a confession?
00:15 - Yeah. - Yeah.
00:15 - All right, I'm just gonna tell you real straight,
00:18 and it's not a joke, and it's in like a setup,
00:20 but I am a recovering people pleaser.
00:24 Like, big time.
00:28 Can any of you relate?
00:29 Online, you can type it in,
00:31 I'm a recovering people pleaser.
00:33 Some of you don't even type in the word recovering,
00:35 because like, you're a people pleaser right now.
00:37 Because I don't know about you,
00:38 but man, there's so much pressure to fit in.
00:42 Like, growing up, I just remember,
00:44 I wanted to wear the right clothes,
00:46 wear the right shoes, say the right things,
00:49 get invited to the right parties,
00:50 and by parties, I mean like, you know,
00:52 at McDonald's where they had the big clown,
00:54 'cause I was a kid, and all those kind of things,
00:57 and I never felt like I did.
00:58 One of the problems we had back when I was growing up,
01:01 I grew up in the era, some of you would remember this,
01:04 and the funny thing is it's like, kind of back again,
01:07 but when I was a kid,
01:08 eyes odds and polos were really popular.
01:11 Then if you think they're popular now,
01:13 they weren't for a long time,
01:14 but when I was a kid, they were,
01:15 and we could not afford those.
01:17 My dad worked at a store where,
01:20 a clothing store, and they had a knockoff polo.
01:23 It was not a polo, but it was called
01:25 Knight to the Round Table.
01:26 And there was a knight that had a flag
01:29 that looked like a polo player,
01:30 so I wore like fake polo.
01:32 That's worse than wearing non-polo, is fake polo.
01:35 So I tried to fit in that it worked,
01:37 and I wanted eyes odds, 'cause eyes odds were so cool.
01:39 So my mom felt the pressure,
01:40 and she actually went to a garage sale
01:42 and found some eyes odds socks,
01:45 and bought them for like a quarter, whatever,
01:46 cut the little alligators out,
01:47 and sewed an alligator onto a shirt
01:51 so I could have an eyes odds.
01:52 So I was the guy that came to school
01:54 with an alligator facing down,
01:56 and about to eat something.
01:57 It just didn't work.
01:58 And I just remember so hard,
02:00 I want people to like me,
02:01 I want people to like me,
02:02 all the way into an adult,
02:04 and now I'm a pastor of a church,
02:06 and I should be secure in Christ,
02:08 and yet I still want you to like me.
02:12 And when you don't, it kind of hurts my feelings.
02:15 I'm afraid of what people think.
02:17 I'm trying to grow through it.
02:18 I'm a recovering people pleaser.
02:20 So during this Christmas season,
02:23 we're actually looking at some events,
02:26 around the birth of Christ.
02:28 And we notice as we study the Christmas story,
02:30 that there are three different times,
02:33 when God sent three angels,
02:35 and three different times the angel said,
02:39 fear not, or do not be afraid.
02:43 And today what we're gonna do,
02:44 is we're gonna look at a portion of the Christmas story,
02:47 and the angel's message, do not be afraid,
02:50 I believe will help some people,
02:53 overcome the fear of what other people think about you.
02:58 Now, why does this matter so much?
03:03 And I promise you, it does.
03:05 Because obsessing about what people think about you,
03:09 is the quickest way to forget what God thinks about you.
03:13 Let me say it again,
03:15 the moment you obsess about what they think,
03:18 it takes you away from thinking about what God thinks.
03:23 And so if you're like me,
03:24 and you find yourself worrying a little bit more,
03:27 am I gonna live up to their expectations?
03:29 Or am my parents gonna be proud?
03:31 Am I gonna fit in with them?
03:32 Is what I post gonna be the right thing?
03:34 Am I gonna develop the right brand or whatever it is?
03:37 If you find yourself worrying about living up
03:39 to expectations, I believe God's word is gonna speak to you,
03:43 because all of us feel the pressure,
03:45 to say the right things, drive the right car,
03:47 post the right image,
03:48 and I'm praying that God's word would do,
03:50 a deep work in your heart today.
03:53 Father, bring your word to life.
03:55 Holy Spirit, do surgery on our hearts,
03:59 that we could know you're speaking to us.
04:01 God set us free,
04:03 from living for the applause of people.
04:07 And God help us live for your heart,
04:10 your will, your plan, and your purpose.
04:13 We pray this in Jesus name.
04:14 And everybody said, amen.
04:16 Type it in the comment section online, amen.
04:19 If you're with us today,
04:21 we're gonna look in Matthew chapter one today,
04:23 at a guy named Joseph.
04:25 And Joseph had a very big decision to make.
04:30 His decision was gonna be between what was easy,
04:34 and what was right.
04:36 Have you ever noticed how what's right,
04:40 is rarely what's easy, right?
04:43 Like it's right not to gossip,
04:45 but it's so much more fun to do it.
04:47 You wanna be in on the know, right?
04:48 Or it's right to resist the temptation,
04:51 but it's easy to eat it, buy it, squeeze it, pop it,
04:54 whatever you do to it,
04:55 it's so much easier to give in, right?
04:57 And so here we have Joseph,
04:58 and he was engaged to be married
05:00 to a young girl named Mary.
05:03 And if you don't know during this time in culture,
05:05 engagement is a little bit different than today.
05:08 For one thing, they didn't have the pressure
05:11 to have the Instagram worthy engagement,
05:14 where you actually propose,
05:16 and then you do 45 minutes of photos,
05:19 faking the actual moment.
05:21 Ha, okay, do it again.
05:23 Ha, now with the sun behind you.
05:25 Ha, for 45 minutes, I watched someone at a hotel
05:29 recreate the moment, you people pleasing faker.
05:34 And I know I'd do the same thing if I got engaged today,
05:36 'cause that's the way culture works.
05:38 If you find yourself like that,
05:41 it was very, very different
05:42 in the engagement process back then.
05:45 Whenever someone would get engaged then,
05:46 it was actually a binding agreement.
05:49 The only way to get out of an engagement
05:51 was actually to die or to divorce.
05:54 So when we see that they're engaged,
05:56 it was much more, it was kind of like you're married
05:59 without just the official marriage.
06:01 You still couldn't have sex,
06:02 but you were in a binding agreement.
06:04 And so Matthew 1:18 kind of gives us the context of the story
06:08 and here's what scripture says.
06:09 "This is how the birth of Jesus the Messiah came about.
06:13 "His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph,
06:16 "but before they came together,
06:18 "she was found to be pregnant through the Holy Spirit."
06:22 This is a nightmare if you're Joseph.
06:26 You are saving yourself for marriage.
06:29 You're in love with the virgin girl.
06:31 You are engaged and kind of like married
06:35 in our culture today.
06:37 He didn't have sex with her and she comes in and says,
06:40 "Guess what?
06:41 "I'm pregnant."
06:43 Immediately, what he knows beyond a shadow of a doubt
06:48 is that's not his baby.
06:52 What do you think he's thinking?
06:55 You're pregnant, you broke my heart,
07:00 our relationship's over, who did it?
07:02 I'm gonna kill him.
07:04 I know Joseph was the father of Jesus
07:07 in the sense of raising him.
07:08 I guarantee he thought I'm gonna kill him
07:10 because that's what you typically think.
07:12 And Mary's like, "No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no,
07:14 "don't worry, this is actually good news.
07:15 "Like an angel of the Lord appeared to me and spoke to me
07:17 "and said, 'You found favor with me
07:18 "'and you're gonna give birth to the Son of God.
07:19 "'It's amazing,' and the angel did it, really, I promise."
07:22 I don't know where you guys are, that's just funny to me.
07:25 Like an angel says that, he's looking going,
07:27 "What, are you, woman, you're crazy.
07:30 "Don't give me that."
07:31 He's like, "I don't know, I saw that guy
07:32 "in the muscle shirt down at the well checking you out."
07:36 Right?
07:37 I mean, the guy's a human.
07:38 He's not going, "Oh, okay, great,
07:40 "the Holy Spirit did it, I'll pray to the Lord,
07:41 "let's thank God right now and take communion together."
07:43 No, he's not doing that.
07:44 So she says she's pregnant, and from a human perspective,
07:48 he's got two options to believe about her.
07:50 Right now, one, she is a liar, or two, she's crazy.
07:55 And both are not good foundations
07:58 upon which to build your marriage, right?
08:01 I didn't have sex with you, you're pregnant,
08:05 you're telling me an angel did it,
08:06 you are a big, fat, liar, liar, pants on fire,
08:11 or you're a wacko, or the Holy Spirit did this to you.
08:16 You're crazy.
08:17 Both options are not good.
08:20 And so let's just say like, he's super Christian,
08:24 which he's not, he's a regular guy.
08:25 Let's just say he's super Christian, and he does believe her.
08:28 Okay, so the angel did this to you.
08:31 What do you think he thinks about next?
08:33 And the answer is, what are people gonna think about me?
08:36 Because if I go through with this
08:39 and marry this woman that got pregnant
08:41 before we were actually married,
08:44 I'm gonna be marked for life.
08:45 I am the guy that broke God's law.
08:47 I am in the position of power.
08:49 I would have maybe pressured her.
08:51 No one's gonna believe it anyway
08:52 if we try to tell them about this Holy Ghost thing.
08:54 It's gonna be a scandal that follows him
08:57 through his whole life.
08:58 And then if he looks at it from her perspective,
09:01 Mary, she's gonna be an outcast.
09:04 She is gonna be rejected,
09:05 and no one's gonna speak to her because in that culture,
09:08 that type of sin would put you out of business.
09:13 He, in a similar way in business, he's a carpenter.
09:17 No one's gonna do business with him
09:19 because their parents won't bless the marriage.
09:22 And then worse yet, their child is gonna be mocked
09:26 all day long wherever he goes.
09:30 So what's going on in his mind?
09:32 We don't know the details,
09:34 but what we do know is he's out.
09:36 Someone comes in, I'm dating Amy.
09:39 She says, "I'm pregnant by the Holy Ghost."
09:40 I'm done.
09:42 You go figure that one out yourself, right?
09:43 That's what he's gonna do.
09:44 He's bailing on the relationship,
09:46 and we see him walking out.
09:47 Matthew 1:19 says this,
09:49 "Because Joseph, her husband,"
09:51 and they're calling her the husband
09:52 'cause they were engaged and we talked about that,
09:54 "Because he was faithful to the law
09:57 "and yet did not want to expose her to public disgrace."
10:00 So he's a good man.
10:02 He's trying to get out of this gracefully
10:05 without making it worse for her.
10:06 He had in mind to divorce her quietly.
10:11 I don't wanna make this worse for her.
10:15 I'm certainly not going through with this,
10:17 so I'll just try to get out of this,
10:19 and maybe I can rebuild my life and divorce her quietly
10:24 and move on with things
10:25 if I can just kind of get out of this,
10:28 then maybe things will be okay.
10:32 What are people gonna think of me?
10:34 So he's not going to shame her,
10:36 and he thinks, "Maybe I can start over.
10:40 "Maybe I can save my reputation
10:41 "and save whatever of hers is there.
10:43 "Maybe I can find someone new.
10:46 "Maybe somehow I can still have a life after this."
10:50 And he's about to learn
10:52 one of life's most important lessons.
10:55 And what is that?
10:56 If you're taking notes, write this down.
10:58 That pleasing God often means disappointing people.
11:02 That doing what God wants is often very, very different
11:08 than doing what people want.
11:11 In fact, we'll see this in Matthew 1:20-21.
11:14 Scripture says this, "But Joseph, after he'd considered this,
11:18 "an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream."
11:21 So he's gonna divorce her quietly.
11:24 He's gonna move on and try to rebuild.
11:25 And an angel appears and says, "Joseph, son of David."
11:29 Here it is, let's all say it aloud.
11:30 The angel says, "Do not be afraid."
11:33 What does the King James angel say?
11:35 The King James angel says, "Fear not.
11:38 "Don't be afraid to take Mary home as your wife,
11:41 "because what is conceived in her
11:43 "is from the Holy Spirit," Scripture says.
11:47 "Then she'll give birth to a son,
11:50 "and you are to give him the name Jesus,
11:52 "because he will save his people from their sins."
11:57 What do we know?
11:58 For centuries, all of God's people were waiting on a Savior.
12:03 And Joseph thinks, "Maybe this could happen,
12:06 "but what is it going to cost me?"
12:09 What is the problem and how does this apply to you?
12:13 Let's revisit an earlier thought and look at a new one.
12:17 What do we know about the danger
12:19 of living for the applause of people?
12:21 And it is this,
12:22 obsessing about what people think about you
12:26 is the quickest way to forget what God thinks about you.
12:30 But on the other hand,
12:33 obsessing about what God thinks about you
12:37 is the quickest way to forget what people think about you.
12:41 (congregation applauding)
12:42 Right?
12:43 When you start to put God first
12:45 and live for an audience of one,
12:48 suddenly pleasing God means more than the applause of men.
12:53 It's, "God, I wanna seek you first.
12:56 "I wanna put your kingdom first,
12:58 "your values first, your will first.
13:02 "God, it's not about what they want.
13:04 "It's not about what I want,
13:06 "but God, I want to surrender my will to your purpose."
13:10 How do we do that?
13:12 How do we do it?
13:13 When naturally we care about how many likes our post gets.
13:18 When naturally it breaks our heart
13:22 when the person that we like and we follow unfollow us.
13:27 How dare them do that?
13:31 They will answer to God.
13:32 How do we do it when we care so much
13:38 about people that we work with,
13:39 people we go to school with?
13:41 How do we live for God instead of for people?
13:44 I'll give you a couple of quick thoughts today
13:46 from God's Word.
13:47 I'll set up the first principle by asking again,
13:50 just for context, how did God use Mary and Joseph?
13:54 What'd they do?
13:55 Well, God used Mary, she gave birth to Jesus,
13:58 the Son of God, who gave his life as a ransom.
14:03 Can you imagine, even though there was that outcome,
14:07 the grief that Mary and Joseph would endure?
14:12 People would not believe them, they would be scorned,
14:15 they would be shamed.
14:16 We know they had to run for their lives
14:17 because ultimately, Herod was trying to kill their baby.
14:21 People were saying, Joseph is not really the father,
14:24 and I did the math, they definitely got pregnant
14:27 before their wedding day, there's no doubt about it.
14:31 And Joseph and Mary's life illustrates the principle,
14:33 number one, if you're not ready to be criticized
14:36 for your obedience to God,
14:38 you're not ready to be used by God.
14:40 How do you do God's will?
14:44 You gotta be ready to take some heat for doing God's will.
14:46 If you're not ready to face some criticism
14:48 for your obedience to God,
14:50 you can never be in the middle of God's will.
14:52 I like what Paul said in Galatians 1:10, he said,
14:55 obviously, I'm not trying to win the approval of people.
14:58 I'm not doing that, I'm way past that.
15:01 But instead, I'm trying to win the approval of God.
15:03 If pleasing people were my goal,
15:06 I would not be Christ's servant.
15:08 Can we stop there for a moment?
15:10 If I'm a recovering people pleaser,
15:14 and if pleasing you is my goal,
15:19 I can't live faithfully for Jesus.
15:21 So I want you to hear this, I want you to feel this.
15:23 If you are trying to impress your dad,
15:26 if you're trying to do only what your mom wants,
15:30 if you're trying to live for his approval or her approval
15:33 or their approval, whoever they are,
15:35 'cause they're there, they think this, they think that,
15:37 who's they, I don't know, but they're they.
15:39 If you're trying to live for the approval of people,
15:41 you cannot be a servant of Christ.
15:42 And so where are you holding back?
15:46 I mean, are you a servant of Jesus?
15:49 If you are, do you go public with your faith?
15:53 You know, like take a stand for Jesus at school.
15:56 You know, like wear a Christian shirt in
15:59 or pray over your meal,
16:00 even though you know they're gonna make fun of you.
16:02 Pray over your meal at work,
16:04 or refuse to be a part of some deal
16:06 that is not God honoring at work,
16:08 even though it would make you a lot of money.
16:10 Or you go to the party and you don't drink when you're there
16:13 or you may not go to the party
16:15 because you just don't wanna be around that kind of stuff.
16:18 Or you don't go to certain movies
16:20 or watch that kind of show and everybody's like,
16:22 who you think you are, you're holier now,
16:24 you're better than that.
16:25 Or you don't listen to certain kind of music,
16:27 even though it's the most popular music,
16:28 because what's in that music
16:29 isn't good to put in your mind.
16:31 And they'll make fun of you and they'll laugh at you.
16:33 Or you wait until you're married
16:36 to share the gift of lovemaking
16:38 because your body doesn't belong to you,
16:39 but it belongs to God.
16:40 And everybody else is gonna say,
16:41 that's so old fashioned, that's so stupid,
16:44 you're missing out on the fun.
16:46 They may not go out with you when you don't put out.
16:49 And you may lose someone you like
16:50 'cause you won't give them what they want.
16:52 If you are not ready to face opposition
16:55 for your obedience to God,
16:56 you're not ready to be used by God.
16:58 And here's what I hope you understand.
16:59 Those who make the biggest difference
17:01 often endure the greatest pain.
17:02 Do you wanna go be popular on social media
17:06 and take the word out?
17:07 You're gonna get shot at a lot.
17:09 In fact, all these things are kind of minor,
17:12 but anything in my marriage and ministry with Amy
17:15 that we did that we felt like God called us to,
17:17 it was always met with opposition.
17:19 It started with having a big family, six kids.
17:22 You wouldn't believe that people are like,
17:24 oh, do you know what causes that?
17:25 Why are you doing that?
17:26 Nah, nah, I mean, you know,
17:27 we have family members that are like upset
17:29 going, I have baby number four.
17:30 We're not talking to you.
17:30 Don't you have number five?
17:31 And they're like mad when God calls children
17:34 a blessing from God, and yet we get criticized for that.
17:37 And then we home educated back before you had to,
17:40 you know, like 2020, right?
17:42 This was way back when it was highly criticized.
17:45 We felt got called by God for it.
17:47 Never told anybody else they should do it,
17:48 but man, we got judged for it.
17:51 They're not gonna be social,
17:52 and they're not gonna be this,
17:53 and they're not gonna be that.
17:53 We actually didn't want them to be what everybody else was
17:55 'cause everybody else was doing things
17:56 that weren't honoring to God.
17:57 In the church world, we experimented with video teaching,
18:04 and everybody said video teaching doesn't work.
18:07 That's not spiritual.
18:07 What's funny is 'cause whenever I'm teaching,
18:08 everybody's looking at the screen.
18:09 They're not looking at me.
18:10 I'm like, look at your mama here, right?
18:12 They're looking at the screen,
18:12 but I mean, we got hammered in the church world for that.
18:16 Multi-site, when we were one of the first churches
18:19 that started meeting in more than one location,
18:21 and you're full of yourself, and you're this, that,
18:23 that, and the other.
18:24 Church Online, we're the first church
18:26 to create Church Online platform.
18:29 It was funny is the whole church world
18:31 was critical of that, critical of that.
18:33 We offered it for free, and those who criticized it the most
18:35 were the first to use it
18:36 when they couldn't meet physically in 2020,
18:38 but a lot of criticism.
18:39 You version Bible app, you would think giving away the Bible
18:43 to 700 million people would probably be a good thing,
18:45 and there's people to this day who say
18:47 the Bible is a piece of paper.
18:48 It's not an app.
18:49 And they criticize that over and over again.
18:52 One of the most unusual things for me,
18:54 it took great faith when I tried
18:56 to start a leadership podcast
18:58 because I didn't know if anybody would care.
19:00 Well, people did care, but what's interesting
19:03 is I probably take more criticism for that from Christians
19:06 because you're a pastor,
19:08 you shouldn't talk about leadership.
19:10 I don't know why, but when I look at Jesus,
19:12 I see a spiritual leader,
19:15 and I see leadership as spiritual,
19:18 and that's one of the biggest things I get criticized for.
19:22 If you're gonna do something special,
19:23 you gotta be ready to take the heat.
19:25 If you wanna make a big difference,
19:26 you gotta be ready to face the criticism.
19:28 If you're not ready to face criticism
19:31 for your obedience to God, wherever you stand strong,
19:33 you're not ready to be used by God.
19:36 How do we live for God instead of people?
19:37 That's first thought.
19:38 Second one is this, we need to remember
19:40 that extraordinary acts of God
19:43 often start with ordinary acts of obedience.
19:47 Just obeying God.
19:49 The Savior of the world is born,
19:53 but a couple of teenagers say yes to God.
19:57 And it's so hard to imagine how they could say yes
20:01 without knowing any of the details.
20:03 In fact, Mary was told that a sword's gonna pierce her soul
20:08 over this whole deal.
20:09 In other words, the only detail she knew
20:11 is that it was gonna be horrible.
20:13 And so often, whenever God is calling us,
20:15 okay, I'm not gonna live for people,
20:17 but I'm gonna live for God.
20:19 I'm gonna date in a way that honors God.
20:22 I'm gonna manage my finances in a way that honors God.
20:24 I'm not gonna take that job,
20:25 even though I want that job,
20:26 because that job's not honoring,
20:28 and I don't have another, I'm gonna trust you, God,
20:30 and I wanna know the details.
20:31 Just tell me how this is gonna work out.
20:34 Mary and Joseph had to say yes without knowing the details.
20:38 So often, I think God would say,
20:39 you can't handle the details.
20:40 Psalm 19, 105 says that God's word is a lamp unto our feet,
20:44 a light unto our path.
20:46 If his word is a lamp unto our feet,
20:48 then his word shows us the next one or two steps.
20:51 And we wanna say, God, if I'm gonna live for you,
20:55 I wanna see step number 10.
20:57 And God says, you can't see step number 10
20:59 until you take one and two.
21:01 Then I'll show you three and four,
21:04 and then I'll show you five and six.
21:06 You wouldn't take five and six
21:08 if you didn't see my faithfulness in one and two.
21:10 That's some of the most special things that God will do.
21:15 We'll start to the smallest moment when you say,
21:20 this is what man wants, but I'm gonna do what God wants.
21:25 Is there some area of your life
21:28 that you're living to please people and not to honor God?
21:32 It could be in your money,
21:35 that you're literally spending all that you have
21:39 to buy things that you don't need
21:41 to impress people you don't even like.
21:43 Look at me, look at me, look at me, look at me, look at me.
21:45 And you're not giving the way you could,
21:48 and you're not saving,
21:49 you're not preparing to be a blessing to people
21:50 because you're so wrapped up
21:52 in pleasing the people of this world.
21:54 Or maybe you're studying something in college
21:59 or you're in a career just because that's what mom
22:02 or dad wanted, when you know God
22:05 might have something different for you.
22:07 Or maybe you're in a relationship right now
22:11 and you are compromising sexually to please someone
22:16 that is not loving and honoring you or God.
22:20 Some of you, you're hiding your faith.
22:23 You're a Christian, but nobody at works know it
22:25 because you think they may not like you
22:26 if you're a follower of Jesus.
22:28 And I wanna remind you that you have no idea
22:31 what God might do through a single act of obedience.
22:35 Sometimes the most amazing things happen
22:39 when we don't do what people want,
22:41 but we do one small act of obedience toward God.
22:45 You have no idea what God might set into motion
22:49 when you live for Him instead of living for people.
22:52 That's pretty special to me that when I was in college,
22:55 I was unfortunately living all for people.
22:59 Popularity, parties, what he blah, blah, blah.
23:02 And that didn't work.
23:04 Have any of you ever noticed that sin can be fun for a while,
23:06 but then it's not fun?
23:08 It's like a sneeze.
23:10 Sneeze feels good, and then there's snot everywhere, right?
23:12 That's what sin's like.
23:13 And so God prompted someone, somewhere,
23:19 to give money to an organization known as the Gideons.
23:26 God prompted someone to be obedient.
23:28 And God prompted a man named Mike, who was a Gideon,
23:32 to go to the campus that I was at.
23:34 And I went to a class and came out,
23:37 and Mike was prompted to stop me.
23:40 All the students there, some walked by, he stopped me
23:43 and said, "Would you like a free Bible?"
23:45 And I started reading that Bible.
23:47 And I had no idea that God had prompted three guys
23:50 on the first weekend of the church that looked at me
23:52 and said, "That guy's hurting, he needs Jesus."
23:54 That prompted three guys to pray for me every day
23:57 until they would see a miracle.
23:59 And I started reading the Bible,
24:01 and I got a little bit excited about God.
24:03 And then God prompted someone to invite me
24:05 to a downtown Bible study where there was a man
24:09 named Nick Harris teaching the Word,
24:12 and he became like a spiritual father to me.
24:14 And then God prompted Nick to reach out to me
24:18 to ask if I'd ever felt called to ministry.
24:24 And fast forward to this day,
24:26 the same guy who received a free Bible
24:28 had a conversation with a guy named Bobby Grunewald,
24:31 who's on our staff, and God had prompted him to say,
24:35 "What if we as a church created a Bible app
24:37 "and gave it away for free?"
24:39 And when you put all these little promptings together,
24:41 you see that through our church family
24:45 to only the glory of God,
24:46 the Bible app is on 700 million devices today.
24:50 And all the way through, what happened?
24:52 Prompting, prompting, prompting, prompting, prompting,
24:54 prompting, prompting, prompting, prompting.
24:56 Think anybody ever made fun of Mike for handing out Bibles?
24:58 Sure.
25:00 Think anybody said to a donor,
25:01 "You're stupid for giving that money to an organization?"
25:03 Sure.
25:05 You think anybody said,
25:05 "Oh, if you ask the guy to go to church,
25:07 "go to Bible study, he might not go,
25:09 "he might think you're weird?"
25:09 Sure.
25:11 You ever think Nick might've wondered,
25:12 "Well, what if I ask if he's called for God
25:14 "and he's really not and he thinks that's dumb?"
25:16 God's gonna speak to someone here
25:19 and you're gonna stop living for the approval of people.
25:24 I don't know what it's gonna be,
25:24 but you're gonna say, "Okay, what?
25:27 "I'm going to not put my favorite sport ahead of God.
25:33 "I'll cheer him on on Saturday,
25:34 "but I'm gonna be here on Sunday.
25:35 "And I'm not just gonna be here,
25:36 "but I'm prompted to serve
25:38 "and use my gifts in the body of Christ."
25:41 God's gonna prompt someone here to be bolder in school.
25:44 When you walk in, a light walks in and everyone knows it.
25:48 Maybe be bolder at your office.
25:50 God's gonna prompt someone to stop playing around
25:53 financially and tithe,
25:55 to get out of debt.
