Everton boss Sean Dyche previews their EFL Cup quarter-final with Fulham on Tuesday
Transcript
00:00 30 Monday evening.
00:02 You treated this competition very seriously this season,
00:06 and you've all overplayed that.
00:07 Can you please say that again?
00:09 Well, we're patching things together regarding...
00:12 Well, we've got a couple back from suspension.
00:15 Injuries have stretched us, but yes, I'll certainly be going out with the mentality to win
00:20 and putting a team out that I believe can win.
00:22 Home game, of course, as well.
00:24 We want Goodison to be rocking and we want to keep the momentum.
00:28 Winning cup competitions, or at least at Thamesington,
00:31 could be something that a club the size of Everton or Staffordshire have to be going for?
00:36 Yes, but people have been saying that.
00:37 You say about all clubs, 'Oh, why aren't you trying to win a cup?'
00:39 You know, don't try and lose a cup, you know.
00:40 It's a strange thing.
00:41 It's always like, 'Oh, they're not trying to win it.'
00:42 Trust me, we're trying to win it.
00:44 We've been trying to win one for years.
00:46 It ain't that easy.
00:47 Everyone says, 'Oh, why aren't you trying to win a cup?'
00:48 We're trying to win a cup.
00:49 Everyone's trying to win a cup.
00:51 But at the end of the day, I've said it for years as well,
00:54 the Premier League thing will be what you will.
00:55 The kudos, the money, the feel, the fans, everyone wants the Premier League.
00:58 And sometimes you have to weigh up what's the realities.
01:02 This season, I've been trying to change the mentality from last season and continue it.
01:06 And I just thought it was right to go into these competitions and go,
01:09 'Right, no, no, lads, you're playing.'
01:10 And that's sort of like, 'Oh, am I getting rested?'
01:12 Not for me, though.
01:13 I don't really enjoy all that.
01:14 So I said, 'No, no, you're playing. End of story.'
01:16 So we're trying to enhance that mentality.
01:20 This game might be different because of the injuries,
01:22 but I'll wait and see what the news is.
01:25 Do you think a man might say it's your first quarterfinal as a manager?
01:30 It might be.
01:31 My cup record's not amazing, to be honest.
01:33 So you're probably right.
01:36 I've had a couple of ugly ones.
01:38 Does it feel like it focuses minds a bit more, like the prize is a bit more in sight?
01:44 Well, I personally, and I wasn't a brilliant player,
01:48 but I had the mentality that every game was important.
01:50 So therefore, I try and win it.
01:51 So I've really just put that, you know,
01:53 I try and work in very simple words and simple ways with the players.
01:56 And so that's the mentality that we want to build.
01:59 And it becomes a constant.
02:00 You know, if you can build it and you work hard through the training regimes
02:03 and all the rest of it, it becomes a constant.
02:05 And that's what I'm...
02:06 In Havana as a manager, it's not Alex Ferguson I've had here for years.
02:10 It became a constant.
02:11 It was like, 'This is just what we do.'
02:12 It wasn't, you know, it's not a big drama over everything.
02:15 It's just like, 'No, this is what we do.'
02:17 And that's it, lads.
02:17 This is what we do. We win.
02:19 Now, we're nowhere near that.
02:21 But what I'm suggesting is you can build a mentality of that.
02:24 Quality and tactical, all the rest of it.
02:26 But you can, I think you can enhance and build a mentality.
02:29 And that's what I'm looking to do.
02:30 You know, regardless of what the game is, we put a side out.
02:33 We're all pointing in the right direction to win it.
02:35 OK, folks.
02:39 Cheers, everyone.
02:41 Thank you.
02:42 (sighs)
