Highlights of a Newcastle Falcons NBL game against the Sydney Kings at Broadmeadow Basketball Stadium in 1989
Transcript
00:00 Great timing skills there by Everett and the pressure is right on the visiting team from Sydney.
00:04 Dalton now, two point shot, he can't make it. Three Falcons in there to try and get the rebound.
00:09 Gerry Everett really pumped up for this match tonight.
00:13 Michael Johnson. Now to Bill Jones at the top, back out to Everett.
00:20 Inside to Johnson, he tries to get around Morris, he throws the ball up and it goes in the hoop.
00:24 Michael Johnson goes into the canteen and the Falcons 14 points 2.
00:28 Yes, they're hot, shooting a brilliant percentage as Michael Johnson ended up just about in the canteen after that shot.
00:34 Neil Turner of course leading the blocked shot statistics, averaging about 3 a game, so that's his first one for this game.
00:43 Peter Harvey, Neil Turner, here's the blocked shot at the other end.
00:47 Yes, good effort there by Turner.
00:48 But to Morris he gets that basket at the other end, Peter Harvey, enormous basket for the Falcons.
00:53 16-4 the Falcons lead. Ridland now trying to get inside, that looked like a bit of a travel shot by Turner.
00:59 Ridland gets it back, gets the two points. It's all happening.
01:02 What a start by both these teams.
01:04 Yes, Neil Turner doing a fine job on Ridland.
01:07 Johnson now, forcing into Morrissey. Gets the ball to Harvey.
01:12 Now to Everett, they're moving it quickly, the Falcons.
01:14 Everett tries to get around Keough, goes for the shot. Can he make it? It's in the hole.
01:19 What shooting percentage the Falcons at the moment, 18 points to 6.
01:23 Can't miss at this stage.
01:25 They really got all over the man.
01:29 And offensively he was telling them to just keep the ball wide and just look for Gerry,
01:33 because they're guarding the man outside, just look inside for Gerry Everett.
01:37 Another bit of a landmark, it's covered there by Steve Carfina, but a nice pass and great jumping ability.
01:44 Great athletic ability Dave, can he Gerry Everett?
01:47 Oh, well he can jump and I've said all along, if he gets inside against a smaller man, well he's unstoppable.
01:53 And Mike Johnson, a great pass, and he only needs three to get 600 for his NBL career,
01:57 which is also a great effort for Mike, so he's going to achieve two milestones in this game tonight.
02:02 Well he's actually picked up six assists already Dave, so he's passed.
02:05 Well there we go, that's 1,003 he has, or 603 rather, in his career, that's a great effort for Mike.
02:12 So Ian Davies going out of the game, Damian Keough coming back in, good job on Gerry Everett in the second and third terms.
02:18 Sean Dennis pushes off Carfina, intercepted by Svell Dennis, now to Morrissey, Morrissey what can he do?
02:25 Behind the back goes all the way, super basket Tim Morrissey.
02:28 That's double figures for Tim Morrissey, looked like he didn't have too much control there, watch this replay again.
02:34 Tim Morrissey, going through, weaving his way through three defenders and making the two.
02:42 Very determined play by Morrissey, back to live action, Everett now, two points to Gerry Everett.
02:47 69-60 the Falcons lead.
02:50 Let's have a look at Gerry Everett's shot.
02:53 Yes, good screen there by Bill Jones, knocks his defensive man off, a little bit of a shot just past the free throw line.
02:59 And this has turned out to be another good one, 83-76 the Falcons lead.
03:05 There it is again, Neil Turner gets the rebound and puts the two in, that gives him double figures for the game, ten points.
03:10 Bill Jones knocked it away from Tim Morrissey, substituted, I thought he had plenty of justification to have a word.
03:15 Michael Johnson, into Bill Jones, swivels around Mark Riddon, throws it up short, gets the offensive rebound,
03:21 Damian Keough gets the foul, Jones will go to the line of shoot, meetings down a little bit.
03:26 Billy Jones would have something close to 20 rebounds, I think about 17 or 18.
03:31 Pushes off Rebillion, Michael Johnson to Chris Dill.
03:35 Keep the ball moving.
03:36 Falcons very keen to work inside tonight, Terry is, Everett can't buy a basket, Chris Dill nearly gets it, Rebillion comes up with a strong rebound.
03:43 The crowd haven't forgotten the Moose champ.
03:48 Yes, very aggressive, but good play by Ian Rebillion for his team there.
03:52 They're the sort of players you need in the tight situations.
03:55 Four minutes left in the match, five points the difference, the foul was called.
03:59 They're making the Falcons really work now.
04:03 Billy Jones throws a dreadful pass to Michael Johnson, he wasn't even looking.
04:06 Jones gets it back, I doubt very much whether they can hear the hooter.
04:10 Everett now, throws it up, it goes in the hole, I don't know how, but it's in the hole.
04:15 Four point gap, 90-86 for the Falcons, three minutes left in the match.
04:19 Cappino now, gets around Sean Dennis, gets around Chris Dill, still gets the foul, Kings from the side.
04:31 Side ball, watch the action replay here with Chris Dill, never in position, little bump, possibly not a bad foul in that situation.
04:38 The ball from the side, on 14 fouls now though.
04:42 Mark Ridland, strong underneath the basket, throws up a pretty ordinary shot, Jones gets the rebound.
04:47 Chris Dill just slows it down for the Falcons now, Sean Dennis bringing it down the court.
04:52 This turn over, or possession rather, is very very important as Bill Jones trying to make some space in the middle there.
04:59 Pass there by Tim Morrissey. Sean Dennis, Cappino knows that Sean Dennis and Michael Johnson are the danger men from outside for the Falcons.
05:07 Billy Jones, knees it back to Gerry Everett, over to Michael Johnson now, Johnson, three point attempt, oh!
05:14 And it off the bat, Ben Ingram, well, strong on hope Michael Johnson, here it is.
05:22 Watch the action there, off balance and only a couple of seconds left on the 30 second clock.
05:29 Pressure now.
05:31 This is going all the way to the wire, Dave Ankeny we've seen some exciting clashes in this stadium, but this is sensational stuff.
05:39 What a great game, I'll tell you, this game of basketball always deserves a last minute.
05:44 Ian Davies, top of the key, three point, short, Falcons back in possession.
05:49 Full court press.
05:53 Sean Dennis now, the Kings allowing him to run, 42 seconds left in the game.
05:58 Sean Dennis, Cappino, Dennis back to Jones, gets the ball back, Sean Dennis, then runs into Bill Jones.
06:03 Double D again, Dennis does well to get out of that.
06:06 Michael Johnson, 29 seconds left in the game, four point gap, Michael Johnson with the ball, back to Billy Jones, they're playing this very well the Falcons.
06:14 Michael Johnson now, has the shot, in the eye of Gerry Everett, that's the ball game.
06:20 No run, good night, Damian Keough, he'll get the point, Michael Johnson, Damian Keough gets the two, will go to the line to add the extra.
06:27 So maybe I've spoken too well, he's 13 seconds left on the clock.
06:31 100 to 96 the Falcons lead, Damian Keough will try and narrow that.
06:37 Michael Johnson, 11 seconds left on the clock, they've got to get it in their own half.
06:43 Now to Billy Jones, to Peter Hill, 5 seconds left on the clock, now to Sean Dennis, 3 seconds, 1 second, Gerry Everett, it's over.
06:50 Everett gets the basket, it's counted, what a win, unbelievable scenes here at the Newcastle Sports Entertainment Centre as we talk ourselves off.
07:00 The Newcastle Falcons in the second upset in two weeks, they have defeated the Sydney Kings, 102 to 97, as coach Ken Coles salutes the crowd.
07:12 Standing ovation and Gerry Johnson, what a victory.
07:15 That was a fantastic match and they certainly gave a great performance here, last home game and coach Ken Cole applauds the crowd for their great support as we see the players come into the changing room.
07:26 To play good basketball and I feel that they're starting to grow up, you know, they're not making as many silly mistakes and I think we're playing to win now.
07:37 You know I think a lot of the first half of the season we were playing to find out if we could compete, now they think they can win and they're playing that way.
07:44 The Sydney Kings lost a lot of games by a few points last year, they've won those this year, that same thing has happened to you this year, gee you could be a lot further up the ladder.
07:51 Well we can, 11 games by 2 shots, if our opponents miss one 3 shot game and we make one more we'd be on top of the league.
08:00 They have been very consistent and I think that's why there was a turn away crowd tonight again, they know these kids, at least they fight hard and you couldn't get much more excitement than they give every week.
08:09 What do you think when you're led by 20 points?
08:11 I always regard the first quarter as sort of a sparring session and I never worry too much about the points, I worry more about the fouls and so I knew they were going to come back at us.
08:20 I just hoped that we'd take a lot out of them physically in trying to come back and maybe it worked that way but it was just an awesome first quarter.
08:28 A gutsy performance by the kids to stay in there tonight because the Kings did come back at you hard.
08:32 Well I kept telling them, Sydney is one week off playing in the finals and if they're not intense and fired up and ready to go in a game like this they never will be so we knew they were going to be at their best and it was up to us to rise a little bit higher.
08:46 Have you got a team to take you to the 1990 flag?
08:48 We're probably 2 players short but we're working very hard to get them.
08:54 And Coach Ken Cole, a personal achievement for you tonight, your 100th win in the NBL.
08:58 I didn't even know, that's nice too, all of those things are nice I suppose, you think about them when you get old.
09:03 Well certainly a marvellous night's entertainment here at the Newcastle Sports Entertainment Centre between the Sydney NEC Kings and the Newcastle NIB Falcons.
09:11 I hope you enjoyed all the action from the stadium tonight.
09:13 Next Saturday night on Saturday Night Shootout we bring you the international match between Australia and New Zealand and then stay tuned for the National Basketball League finals for 1989.
09:23 On behalf of Dave Ankeny and Terry Charlton this is Mike Ribbit bidding you good evening.
09:27 Good evening.
