00:00 Because of the businesses that are alive every holiday season, the employment rate in the country increased according to the Philippine Statistics Authority.

00:09 It even increased to 18-year high this October.

00:13 Sandra Aguinaldo was able to see it.

00:15 J.M. Obispado is working as a Christmas tree vendor in Dapitan Arcade.

00:24 Christmas decor is now selling well.

00:27 I started working here in September. I've been here since the first week of September.

00:33 I finished this in December. I worked until December 15.

00:39 My income here is 600 to 1,000 pesos a day.

00:44 We started here in August because that was the starting point of the business.

00:49 It ended by the 22nd of December.

00:55 According to the PSA, one of the reasons why the number of Filipinos with jobs increased is also because of the increase of businesses that are related to Christmas.

01:05 That was seen in the latest Labor Force Survey of the Philippine Statistics Authority for the month of October,

01:12 where the estimated employment rate was 95.8%.

01:16 It was the highest in almost 18 years.

01:20 The lowest unemployment rate in almost 18 years was 4.2% in October,

01:28 which was the same as November 2022.

01:30 Among the industries that have the most jobs,

01:34 there are wholesale and retail trade, agriculture and forestry, and accommodation and food service activities.

01:41 You have bazaars opening during weekends.

01:44 Our restaurants are adding additional workers.

01:49 This is where we see where the source of our increase in employment is.

01:55 But because the work is seasonal,

01:57 people like JM and Anna May have no work after December because they can't afford to buy their goods.

02:05 JM will look for other means of income to support his mother.

02:11 I ride a motorcycle. I also ride a motorcycle online.

02:16 Why do you need two?

02:18 So I can have something to spend on every day and I can be with my family.

02:23 Anna May Martinez-Daman has been saving her salary from August to December.

02:29 After December, what will I do?

02:31 I'll just stay at home. I'll just have a household because we have our own house.

02:37 The National Economic and Development Authority hopes that more people will work

02:42 in the government's bid for investors and continued infrastructure projects.
