The Mizo National Front (MNF) suffered a significant setback, securing only 10 seats, as the Zoram People's Movement (ZPM), the main opposition, claimed 27 out of the 40-member House. The Zoramthanga-led government, comprising 12 ministers, saw Home Minister Lalchamliana abstaining from contesting this election. Mizoram Chief Minister and MNF leader Zoramthanga conceded the Aizawl East-I seat to ZPM's Lalthansanga, trailing by 2,101 votes.

00:00 Sanjoy Hazarika, a journalist and author and Northeast expert, joins us on the broadcast.
00:05 Mr. Hazarika, thank you so much for taking time out and speaking to us on a day when,
00:11 as I began by saying, a new sun has risen in the east, ZPM on Mizoram's horizon.
00:19 How do you see it, the new government there?
00:23 I think the wind was blowing pretty clearly when I was there a few months, a couple of
00:29 some weeks ago.
00:30 It was there for two weeks in October.
00:33 And it was quite visible that I think younger people were definitely in favor of new faces,
00:43 new changes, new party, new leadership, because see, Mizoram, you had three chief ministers
00:51 in 36 years, 37 years.
00:55 So there is a need for a change and the people who are 37 today have no recollection of the
01:04 Mizoram Accord or the way when Lal Degha came, you know, all that, you know, everything comes
01:12 from there.
01:13 And people talk about regionalism and regional parties in places like Mizoram and Nagaland.
01:19 I'd say that they are national parties with a regional outlook, not regional parties as
01:25 the national outlet and the national.
