Hamburg goalkeeper Daniel Heuer Fernandes has been credited for scoring the 'greatest own goal ever' after smashing the ball into his net in a Bundesliga second-division derby clash.
Fernandes was at fault for the second goal in the derby that gave St.Pauli a two-goal lead in Friday's Bundesliga 2 match and social media has been quick to mock the ludicrous effort.
When goalkeepers usually score own goals it is normally as a result of a mistaken save or the ball bouncing back off the woodwork and in of the player, but, Fernandes didn't make any such mistake.
The 31-year-old blasted the ball into his net with a finish that Hamburg's strikers might have wished they could replicate at the other end of the pitch.
A poor defensive play from his side's center-backs left Fernandes scrambling to get back to his goal line following a sloppy back-pass.
The ball bobbled across the surface at the Millerntor-Stadion before being booted by the goalkeeper and into the back of his net.
His attempted clearance was hit with thunderous effect and into the roof of the net, stunning both sets of supporters and his teammates.
Fernandes stared into space while realization set in, however, his side, fortunately, replied with two equalizing goals that rescued a 2-2 draw for the visitors.
Meanwhile, social media erupted with a conversation about the outrageous moment that is a contender for the worst own goal ever.
One comment stated: 'Possibly the greatest own goal I have ever seen, absolutely sensational work from HSV.'
Another added: 'Nah! This should be investigated What in the name of playing out from the back is this?'
A third comment further mocked the goal: 'The goalkeeper was helpless before the terrible shot.'
