00:00 (chimes tinkling)
00:03 - Not only forgetful, but probably taught a masterclass
00:06 in how to be a horrible parent.
00:08 Forgetful mother in the iconic Home Alone series,
00:14 please help me welcome to the stage, Catherine O'Hara.
00:18 (audience cheering)
00:21 - Oh, thank you.
00:25 I didn't know.
00:26 - Oh, thanks, Mama.
00:27 - Oh, darling baby.
00:29 (laughing)
00:31 I didn't know you were gonna have to stand here
00:32 and listen to this.
00:33 - I know, me too.
00:34 - They should give you a chair.
00:35 - I know, right?
00:35 - A chair for the van.
00:36 - I'm just like, the sun's not on me.
00:38 - Okay, smart.
00:39 Well, I have a little speech to make about you.
00:42 - Yeah, yeah, I'll look.
00:43 - Pretend you're not here.
00:45 (laughing)
00:46 After Home Alone opened, I went to see it
00:50 at a Saturday matinee in a theater
00:53 packed with shiny, happy children and their parents,
00:56 and it was thrilling for all of us.
00:58 But at one point, I saw two boys get up out of their seats,
01:00 so not wanting to leave the movie,
01:03 but after having already sucked back their giant sodas,
01:06 they really had to go.
01:07 So they started running up the aisle,
01:09 then suddenly panicked that they might miss something great.
01:11 They turned around, looked back at the screen,
01:13 and one of them said, "It's okay, no, it's just a mom."
01:16 And they kept running.
01:19 I say, "Bright boys, bright boys, Home Alone was, is,
01:24 "and always will be a global,
01:26 "a beloved global sensation."
01:29 The reason, the reason it's that,
01:31 the reason families all over the world
01:33 can't let a year go by without watching
01:36 and loving Home Alone together,
01:39 it's because of Macaulay Culkin.
01:41 Yes.
01:42 (audience cheering)
01:44 Yes, he had a most excellent script
01:46 and a wonderful director,
01:48 but it is Macaulay's perfect performance
01:51 as Kevin McAllister that gave us that
01:56 little every boy on an extraordinary adventure.
02:00 I know you worked really hard, I know you did,
02:02 but you made acting look like the most natural thing
02:05 in the world to do.
02:06 It really was as if we had ambushed the home
02:08 of this real little boy named Kevin to make a movie,
02:12 and he just went along with it for the fun of it.
02:14 He's the dearest thing.
02:17 Okay, oh, oh, the scene where I had to drag him upstairs
02:22 to sleep in the attic because he'd misbehaved,
02:25 and he says, you know, he's mouthing off about the family,
02:29 and I say, "Well, you'd be pretty sad
02:31 "if you woke up tomorrow morning and you had no family."
02:34 And he said, "No, I wouldn't."
02:37 And I was supposed to say,
02:38 "Then say it again, maybe it'll happen."
02:42 And I can't tell you how much that killed me.
02:44 I could not wrap my head around saying something
02:47 so horrific to this beautiful child.
02:51 Of course, I was not yet a mother at the time,
02:53 and I had no idea the kind of things
02:54 that would come out of my mouth with my own two sons.
02:57 (audience laughing)
03:00 Macaulay, a 10-year-old boy,
03:04 this beautiful, dear little 10-year-old boy
03:07 was called a superstar, a moneymaker,
03:10 one of the hottest leading young men in Hollywood
03:14 by the world over.
03:17 How does anyone survive that?
03:19 Well, I believe you'd have to possess a certain quality,
03:22 a gift that dear John Hughes obviously recognized in you,
03:26 Macaulay, your sense of humor.
03:28 It's a sign of intelligence in a child
03:31 and a key to surviving life at any age.
03:33 And you have, from what I see,
03:37 you have brought that sense of sweet, yet twisted,
03:41 yet totally relatable sense of humor
03:44 to everything that you have chosen to do since "Home Alone."
03:47 Macaulay, congratulations, you so deserve your star
03:52 of the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
03:53 And thank you for including me, your fake mom
03:55 who left you "Home Alone" not once, but twice,
03:58 to share in this happy occasion.
04:00 I'm so proud of you.
04:02 God bless you.
04:03 (audience applauding)
04:06 - Thank you.
04:09 (laughing)
04:18 (whooshing)
