00:02:07 Good morning, everyone, and welcome back
00:02:09 to Winnipeg, day two coverage of the Skate Canada Challenge event.
00:02:13 Now, we have a full show here.
00:02:15 Joni's been working on this script.
00:02:16 Let's get going right off the bat, Joni.
00:02:18 Well, 'cause I have so much to say.
00:02:19 I know. Let's go.
00:02:20 First of all, we're gonna start.
00:02:22 It's my sister's birthday, so happy birthday, Carly.
00:02:25 Happy birthday.
00:02:26 From Winnipeg.
00:02:27 If you're tuning in to watch the Junior Free Dance,
00:02:30 there is a revised start time at 1 o'clock,
00:02:33 but stay and watch the show because you will be seeing
00:02:35 the dance after this.
00:02:37 So, let's recap yesterday.
00:02:39 Go ahead, start.
00:02:40 Senior men, Conrad Orzel, Alexa Rakic, and Matthew Noonan,
00:02:44 all had great skates, saw a few quads.
00:02:47 Conrad did miss one of his, but he is still sitting
00:02:49 in first place.
00:02:51 I think it's gonna be a fun, free program because Conrad
00:02:53 sometimes struggle with consistency.
00:02:55 He also goes out of the block so hard sometimes,
00:02:59 he gets a little tired towards the end of the program.
00:03:01 So, we'll see if he paces himself today.
00:03:03 I did an interview with Conrad yesterday
00:03:05 after the lead, of course.
00:03:07 He talked a lot about going to school at York University.
00:03:10 He's gonna graduate this year.
00:03:11 And so, he spent a lot of time away from Edmonton,
00:03:13 away from Ravi Wally.
00:03:14 So, he had a training, he says he's pretty disciplined
00:03:16 on his own, so he's been running his programs,
00:03:18 but it's not the same.
00:03:19 He needs to have, you know, a little bit of that help
00:03:21 from Ravi.
00:03:22 So, after, he'll be going back soon to Edmonton
00:03:26 to spend a lot more time.
00:03:27 So, he's in a really, really good spot right now.
00:03:29 It's been an up and down year because he hasn't had
00:03:31 that training, but we're looking forward to a free program,
00:03:34 strong free program.
00:03:35 - Okay, but I will have to say, one of my highlights,
00:03:38 well, from Senior Man yesterday, is Anthony Paradis.
00:03:42 He has the most creative, unique, I just get raptured
00:03:48 watching him.
00:03:49 He's just so amazing on the ice, what he does with his body
00:03:53 and the music, very unique.
00:03:55 - What's interesting about Anthony is, you know,
00:03:57 aside from the technical side, he is a complete individual,
00:04:01 independent, innovative, and he loves to be who he is
00:04:04 on the ice and hopes that all the jumps work well,
00:04:07 but if they don't, he's still going to perform.
00:04:09 - Absolutely.
00:04:10 Junior dance.
00:04:11 - Okay, take it away.
00:04:12 - Okay, Chloe Muin and Brendan Zhang.
00:04:15 - Yeah, a new team that started just a year ago now.
00:04:18 They were on the Junior Grand Prix, gained lots of experience
00:04:20 there and did quite well.
00:04:22 So, you know, they're in the lead right after the rhythm dance.
00:04:25 - Right, and also, Leila Bilon and Alexander Brandes,
00:04:29 another strong team in Junior.
00:04:30 Like, there was some separation between the teams moving up
00:04:34 and the teams that have been in Junior.
00:04:37 - But look, in ice dance, Canada is so strong, of course.
00:04:40 You know, it's just packed in seniors.
00:04:42 We know that there are three dance teams at the Senior Grand Prix
00:04:46 final in Beijing coming up this weekend--or next weekend,
00:04:49 pardon me.
00:04:50 So we are very, very strong in our Juniors, and it takes a little
00:04:53 while for teams to develop and move up, but it's such an
00:04:56 exciting discipline here in Canada.
00:04:58 - Well, it is, and I also found it interesting watching the
00:05:00 '80s-theme rhythm dance by the Juniors and the '80s-theme rhythm
00:05:04 dance by the Seniors, 'cause there is a definite difference.
00:05:08 - Oh, there's a total difference.
00:05:09 I mean, they would have done--you know, they're a little older,
00:05:11 probably done their homework, but they also have stronger
00:05:13 skating skills, so they can really push that.
00:05:15 It's a lot of fun.
00:05:16 - So in the Senior Dance, Alicia Fabry and Paul Eyre,
00:05:19 I am so impressed with how much they've improved.
00:05:21 Their speed and their strength, like, I've really noticed a
00:05:25 difference in them, so I enjoyed watching their program.
00:05:29 Several strong teams in Senior Dance.
00:05:31 - Yeah, no question.
00:05:32 Hayley Sayles and Nicholas Womstek, of course, they had
00:05:35 stopped at Dancing Together.
00:05:36 She was looking for another partner.
00:05:38 Their partner's off the ice as well.
00:05:40 He was going to flight school for the Air Force, and so they
00:05:44 decided to come back at this point.
00:05:46 They've only been on the ice for two months, I believe, and so
00:05:49 they did a really good job.
00:05:50 They're in third place right now, so, you know, congratulations
00:05:53 to them coming back.
00:05:54 - Okay, and Nadia Byshinska and Peter Beaumont.
00:05:58 First of all, I get ready to start the recording when they're
00:06:00 in their starting position, but them getting into their starting
00:06:04 position was spectacular.
00:06:06 That was a show.
00:06:07 It reminds me of Piper and Paul, how the moment they step on the
00:06:10 ice, they are in character, and they certainly were.
00:06:13 It was a great program.
00:06:15 - And if you watch Nadia's social media, she's always--I mean,
00:06:18 there's a lot of--I'm not sure, I don't want to say drama, but a
00:06:21 lot of dramatic footage of their skating, of everything that they
00:06:26 do in life, and so there's a real passion of performance plus great
00:06:29 technical expertise as well.
00:06:31 - Absolutely.
00:06:32 So Senior Dance is going to be fun to watch.
00:06:34 - Yeah, it really will be.
00:06:36 - Two new events starting, Junior Men and Junior Women.
00:06:39 Junior Men, Grayson Long was second at Nationals last year.
00:06:42 He's here.
00:06:43 We commented last year on how much he'd grown.
00:06:45 I think he has continued to grow.
00:06:47 A few Junior Men still in the category, but I think it's one of
00:06:50 those developmental levels where they're starting to grow and get
00:06:56 stronger and--
00:06:58 - And the reality also in Junior Men, I mean, the world level, you want
00:07:01 to see triple axels.
00:07:02 We don't see a lot of that yet in Junior Men.
00:07:04 There's still a distance to go to compete internationally with that,
00:07:07 but a lot of great skills, a lot of good programs, and great skating
00:07:10 skills as well.
00:07:11 So certainly some distance to close internationally, but it's going
00:07:15 to be a battle.
00:07:16 It's going to be open for anyone.
00:07:17 - Absolutely it is.
00:07:18 Junior Women, seven of the top ten finishers from Nationals last year
00:07:26 are here.
00:07:28 Kerry Yuen, who was a challenge winner last year, also here.
00:07:31 That's going to be a very strong event, and those women are getting
00:07:34 stronger and stronger.
00:07:35 - That's one category that really has improved over the last couple
00:07:40 years, and COVID really got in the way of development of many of the
00:07:42 athletes, but in Junior Women, we're seeing triple-triple combinations,
00:07:45 which we didn't see before, even in Seniors, to a large degree.
00:07:49 So this is very promising, and it's a good group of young women coming
00:07:52 up, so looking forward to see how that sorts itself out.
00:07:55 And remember that no matter what happens here at Challenge, it means
00:07:58 nice, it's great for the athletes, it's the national championships that
00:08:02 really mean something that will take place in Calgary, of course.
00:08:05 That's the big stage.
00:08:06 - The big ticket.
00:08:07 - Yeah.
00:08:08 - All right.
00:08:09 We're on to that part of the program, Winnipeg Fun Facts.
