Adolf Luther: Hängelinse, Stehlinse / Galerie Koch at Art Cologne 2023. Cologne (Germany), November 16, 2023.
Adolf Luther (1912-1990) was a German lawyer, artist and sculptor. He was a major representative of kinetic art and optical art. Luther studied law at the University of Bonn from 1938 and was awarded a doctorate in law in 1943. From 1942 onwards, he devoted himself to painting, giving up his profession as a judge in 1957 in favor of this.
From 1958 onwards, he worked on the influences of light in its energetic-optical properties. He became known for his 1967 Room with Focusing Light in Smoke. Since the early 1970s, he has also worked with laser beams. He is best known for his concave mirror objects, which are closely linked to the surrounding, mostly public spaces as "integrations". Examples include the integrations for the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich, in the former Chancellery in Bonn in 1975/76, in the Tonhalle in Düsseldorf in 1976-78 and on the Bundestag building Altes Wasserwerk in Bonn in 1982.
Luther showed his work in numerous exhibitions, e.g. in solo exhibitions at the Drian Gallery in London (1960), the Städtische Kunsthalle Düsseldorf (1974), the Kunsthalle Bremen (1987), the Museum Haus Esters (1990) and the Museum Morsbroich in Leverkusen (1991). He was a member of the Deutscher Künstlerbund.
Luther was awarded the title of professor by the state of North Rhine-Westphalia in 1979. In 1989, the Adolf Luther Foundation was established to administer the estate of Adolf Luther's artistic work. In 1989 he was awarded the Order of Merit of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia and in 1990 the artist received honorary citizenship of the city of Krefeld.
