Brendan Gulick and Anthony Moeglin discuss what's next for Ohio State Football as they head to bowl game this year.
Transcript
00:00 So I don't want to go too far into this because this is a little more focused on this game.
00:07 But because it is this game, I think it's fair that we have to at least discuss the where do you go from here.
00:15 Right. Ohio State's going to play in a New Year's Six Bowl game. They're 11 and 1.
00:20 They're going to be our top 11 team in the country. There's no way they're not playing on a New Year's Six game.
00:26 The question is, is it the Orange Bowl? Is it the Fiesta Bowl? I don't think they'll be in the Cotton Bowl.
00:32 You know, it's not the Sugar Bowl or the Rose Bowl because those are the playoff games.
00:36 And look, I mean, we left Ohio Stadium last year feeling like, you know, OK, where are we going?
00:44 And it's not going to be a playoff game. And they got a little lucky. Things fell their way.
00:48 I don't think there's a 0% chance that Ohio State, you know, is still is playoff hopeful.
00:54 I don't think it's completely over. But I think there is a far more complicated scenario that exists
01:02 that would allow them to get in the playoffs this year. And I said this postgame last year,
01:07 and I'll stand by it again. I mean, I think it's the truth. If you don't win your conference
01:11 and you don't beat your rival and you're in a four team playoff, I don't think you belong in the playoff.
01:16 I'm not saying Ohio State last year wasn't one of the four best teams in the country.
01:20 I thought they were. But, you know, I don't want to get too philosophical.
01:25 I think it's stupid that we have a four team playoff when you had five Power Five conferences
01:29 in the first place. It's just dumb. You're not rewarding conference champions like you do
01:33 in every other sport at every other level of the NCAA. So the fact that you're going to a 12 team
01:38 playoff next year obviously takes some meaning away from a game like this because it wouldn't
01:43 knock the Buckeyes out of the playoff. That's part of what stings here.
01:46 That said, they have to start, once it becomes official one way or the other,
01:53 they have to start making some decisions about, OK, how does this thing move forward?
01:57 Who's going to play in that game and who doesn't? Who's going to be your quarterback in that game
02:02 and who isn't? Do you play Kyle McCord the whole game? Do you give Devin Brown some run?
02:06 Do you give Keane Holtz some opportunities? I don't know.
02:11 Ohio State needs to look top to bottom and evaluate this thing and say, where can they be better?
02:16 Because again, by their own standards, if you're measuring how successful you are by whether
02:22 or not you win this game three years in a row, it's not good enough.
02:27 It's really interesting to see how it's going to shake out because in this bowl season,
02:33 where they are now, you're going to see whoever's going to the draft, they're going to withdraw
02:37 their name from, they're not going to play because the bowl games really don't mean much.
02:41 We've seen it. You were out there in Pasadena a few years back.
02:45 That was the birth of Jackson Smith and Jigba. So who plays and who's the next guy?
02:50 It was also the birth of Marvin Harrison Jr.
02:53 Yeah, absolutely. Who's it going to be? You kind of turn the page almost.
02:59 If you aren't in the playoff, I agree with you, I think the chances are very, very, very slim.
03:05 But I think there is still a chance. But if you're not in the playoff, what's it going to look like next year?
03:10 You kind of turn the page. You have to start getting some of the young guys in, get them going,
03:16 get them playing, get them practicing more importantly, and start continuing to grow this program
03:21 and try to reload and be in a better position next year.
