00:00 I need more power.
00:03 Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we're taking a look
00:07 at the top 10 hardest video game bosses
00:10 between the years 2000 and 2009.
00:13 Let's win this.
00:14 I know we can do it.
00:15 Number 10, Phantomanta, Super Mario Sunshine.
00:22 (upbeat music)
00:28 Mario's games have typically held back their punches
00:31 until the final boss.
00:33 Well, in some games.
00:35 Sunshine, on the other hand, has earned a bit of infamy
00:39 thanks to Phantomanta.
00:41 The shadowy manta ray has covered Hotel Delfino
00:44 in electrical goo, and the only way to defeat it
00:47 is by spraying it with water.
00:49 Thing is that as you spray it,
00:51 Phantomanta will break up into smaller
00:54 and faster versions of itself,
00:56 making it easy for you to get launched
00:57 into another spawn or the electric goo.
01:00 Basically, you'll be at the mercy of water physics
01:03 and your own spatial awareness to make it out alive.
01:07 (upbeat music)
01:10 Number nine, Vertigo, Resident Evil 4.
01:16 (upbeat music)
01:19 Even in its 2023 remake,
01:23 Vertigo was a tough boss to go against.
01:25 However, the original still retains his reputation
01:28 as the hardest boss in Resident Evil 4.
01:31 It's not necessarily because of him.
01:33 Rather, it's because of how the original RE4 plays.
01:37 In this iteration, Leon can only shoot
01:40 when he's standing still,
01:41 which means you are constantly having to run, stop, shoot,
01:44 run, stop, shoot, and so on.
01:48 Of course, others will point to the random quick time events
01:51 that are required to dodge some of his attacks.
01:53 We'll forever cherish RE4 as it was,
01:56 but if the remake was your first time experiencing it,
01:59 you did get the better version.
02:02 (upbeat music)
02:04 Number eight, Puppet Ganon,
02:10 the Legend of Zelda Wind Waker.
02:12 (upbeat music)
02:15 We've always anticipated a fight with Ganon.
02:23 In any form would be a real test of strength,
02:26 but a puppet form?
02:28 It sounds ridiculous on paper,
02:30 but this Ganon isn't about to grow his nose
02:33 to use as a sword.
02:34 Puppet Ganon comes swinging with three different forms,
02:37 and they each have their own unique attack
02:39 and hard to reach weak points.
02:41 Your Z-target dancing skills
02:43 better be at their best here,
02:45 and you might need to make use of any
02:47 and all equipment you have.
02:49 In the end, you'll be questioning how the puppet
02:52 is more powerful than the psychotic Gerudo.
02:55 (growling)
02:57 Number seven, Vergil,
03:03 Devil May Cry 3 Dante's Awakening.
03:06 (laughing)
03:08 - Unfortunately, our souls are at odds, brother.
03:12 - You could consider Vergil the filter point
03:14 in Devil May Cry 3 if you found yourself feeling
03:17 like you're just mashing your head into the ceiling.
03:19 We can't blame you.
03:21 Vergil is an obscenely hard boss
03:23 in an already obscenely hard game.
03:26 Expect him to teleport around like a madman
03:28 and spam his devil trigger every few seconds.
03:31 Yes, it is absolutely infuriating,
03:34 and may Lord have mercy on your soul
03:37 if you're playing on any difficulty above normal.
03:40 Remember, Capcom thought we enjoyed absurdly tough games.
03:45 We do, but not on this level, man.
03:48 (dramatic music)
03:51 Number six, Rodan, Bayonetta.
03:59 (heart beating)
04:02 Good old father Rodan is our hidden boss,
04:11 and you know what that means.
04:13 Time to crank up the difficulty to 11.
04:16 Rodan is the hardest boss of the first Bayonetta game.
04:20 Harder than Julela is, the dude can land ridiculously
04:24 hard hits at a ridiculously fast rate.
04:27 And if you whiff even one attack,
04:29 he will make you feel your mistakes and punish you harshly.
04:33 You're best off leaving this for when you feel
04:35 most comfortable with your abilities.
04:37 Really, there's no shame in saving Rodan
04:40 for another less stressful time.
04:42 (dramatic music)
04:46 (fighting)
04:48 Number five, Alpha 152, Dead or Alive 4.
04:53 (dramatic music)
04:56 When it comes to Alpha 152,
05:01 you are no longer playing DOA 4.
05:03 DOA 4 is playing you.
05:06 Alpha 152 has some of the most annoying combos
05:09 and throws of any character in the entire franchise.
05:12 Some of its throws can take out half of your health bar.
05:15 Its combos, however, can lock you into almost
05:18 every stun state in the game,
05:20 making it next to impossible to counter its attacks.
05:24 And don't be surprised if you get KO'd
05:26 from getting launched into a wall
05:28 or slammed onto the electrified floor.
05:30 (fighting)
05:32 Number four, Maneater, Demon's Souls.
05:38 (dramatic music)
05:41 (fighting)
05:43 We could have chosen several bosses from Demon's Souls.
05:49 The Dragon God and the Flame Lurker
05:51 came to mind almost immediately.
05:53 But the Maneater is on another level of.
05:57 At first, it's just you and him on a narrow bridge,
06:00 duking it out like any other boss.
06:02 Suddenly, there's a second Maneater?
06:05 Yes, you will have to fight two of these feral fang beasts
06:09 and they are both equally annoying
06:11 with their lunge attacks and screeching.
06:13 Prepare to die a lot.
06:16 (fighting)
06:18 Number three, Nick's Avatar, Persona 3.
06:29 - Everyone, get ready!
06:32 Nick's is preparing to attack!
06:34 - When it comes to the traditional RPG,
06:36 the Nick's Avatar was grueling from start to finish.
06:39 For starters, this thing can inflict
06:42 any status ailment featured in the game,
06:44 meaning you will need to be packing as many items
06:47 to cure your party members and recover HP and SP.
06:50 But that's not even the worst part.
06:53 The Nick's Avatar is going to be
06:54 a painfully long fight for you.
06:57 Care to guess why?
06:58 Yes, it does have phases.
07:01 Not three, not four, not even five.
07:05 We're talking 14 phases.
07:08 In other words, you're going to have
07:10 a long and arduous fight ahead of you.
07:13 (explosion)
07:15 Number two, Sephiroth, Kingdom Hearts.
07:24 (dramatic music)
07:26 (chanting)
07:29 The Nick's Avatar will always be known
07:38 as one of the hardest bosses in turn-based RPGs.
07:41 But action RPGs?
07:43 That spot belongs to Sephiroth.
07:45 His bizarre appearance in Kingdom Hearts
07:47 was neat at first, but then came them hands.
07:51 The one-winged fraud comes packing with 15 health bars
07:55 and all of the most aggressive attacks
07:57 we've come to expect from him.
07:59 Even on the easiest difficulty,
08:01 many of us probably wound up leaving him
08:03 after a few attempts.
08:05 Perhaps we gave lingering will too little credit.
08:08 (fighting)

08:29 Number one, Ares, God of War.
08:35 - Join me, Kratos.
08:36 You should be in stronger.
08:40 - Ares is, by far, the hardest boss of the 2000s.
08:45 And there will never be a boss so awkward and cheap
08:48 as him from that decade.
08:50 The now former God of War was a total pain in the ass.
08:54 Look, it wasn't even because of the controls at this point.
08:57 Ares is just weird because the game suddenly turns
09:00 into an arena fighter where you and him share a health bar
09:03 that functions like a game of tug of war.
09:05 You hit him to gain more health.
09:07 He hits you for more health.
09:09 But what makes the whole fight more aggravating
09:11 is how some of his attacks are unblockable
09:14 and can land several hits in one go.
09:16 You better believe we sat comfortably on his throne
09:19 and danced on his grave.
09:21 - I was trying to make you a great warrior.
09:26 - What's the toughest boss of the 2000s that you faced?
