Nissan has finally given us a chance to drive the closest thing to a Toyota RAV4 Hybrid competitor on the market. It's called the 2023 Nissan X-Trail e-Power e-4orce and it uses a mix of internal combustion with inverters and a generator to power a pair of electric motors. Does it work? Paul Maric tests it out to find out!

00:00 G'day, I'm Paul.
00:01 Nissan has just taken the wraps off the new hybrid version of the X-Trail.
00:05 People go crazy over SUVs in Australia, and hybrid SUVs even more so, with huge waiting
00:10 lists for things like the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid.
00:13 And this is like the stepping stone between standard internal combustion, and then plug-in
00:17 hybrid, and then eventually electric.
00:19 Now this will be coming to Australia in early 2023.
00:21 Today we're going to check it out just in a, I guess, a brief overlook before we do
00:26 finally get it over in Australia.
00:28 Now this is going to compete with things like the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid, and also things like
00:32 the Mitsubishi Outlander plug-in hybrid, and the Ford Escape plug-in hybrid.
00:36 It's priced at just over $50,000 for the entry-level.
00:39 This top spec here will come in at just under $60,000.
00:42 Today we're going to do a detailed review of this car, so if you do want to skip ahead
00:45 to other parts of the review, you can use the time codes on the screen, or if you're
00:49 on YouTube, you can scroll down and use the chapters below.
00:51 And if you haven't done so already, subscribe to our channel, press the bell icon, because
00:55 that's going to tell you every single time we review a new SUV.
01:00 So let's talk about exterior design.
01:01 You've got 13 colours to pick from.
01:03 Now depending on which one you choose, they are either going to be $700 or $1,200.
01:07 You do have a free option as well, if you so desire.
01:10 This colour is actually unique to the Hybrid, and it really looks fantastic.
01:14 It's like a sort of champagne colour there with the offset black roof as well.
01:18 Now down the front here, let's have a look at some of these design elements.
01:21 So big black grille there.
01:23 You can see that a lot of that's actually closed off, because this uses a really interesting
01:26 setup.
01:27 I'll go into this in a bit more detail when we do go for a drive, but this actually uses
01:30 a small three-cylinder engine that runs a generator, then an inverter, and then two
01:34 electric motors.
01:35 So it's not actually like a traditional internal combustion car, which is slightly fascinating.
01:41 Nissan logo up the front there with a camera down there for the 360 camera.
01:44 You've got some of this piano black highlight down here with chrome garnishes, and as you
01:48 work your way down, a little bit more chrome down the bottom there as well.
01:51 In terms of the headlight arrangement, you have full LED headlights.
01:53 It's an interesting cluster, because it is split there.
01:56 You've got the main headlight segment down the bottom, and then the LED running lights
01:59 up the top there.
02:01 It's sort of a unique setup.
02:02 It actually looks pretty good in person, and it gives this car a bit of a unique character
02:06 as well.
02:07 Fog lights down the bottom.
02:08 Now let's whip around the side here and check out these wheels.
02:10 So 20-inch alloy wheel.
02:12 I quite like the design.
02:13 You've got the machined finish on the outside, and that graphite look on the inside.
02:16 Obviously, this is a road-going tyre.
02:19 This car does have all-wheel drive, and it has some sort of off-road driving modes, but
02:23 for the most part, this will be very much an on-road experience.
02:26 It also comes to the ground clearance as well.
02:28 It's 187mm, which is slightly less than the internal combustion version of the X-Trail,
02:33 which is just over 200mm.
02:35 Up the top here, you have the wheel arch cladding, which we've seen on countless SUVs before
02:39 to make people think like it's an off-road capable SUV.
02:42 Over on the side here, e-power, which is the designation they give their hybrid vehicles,
02:47 and then this also is e-force with a 4 as well, which means all-wheel drive.
02:52 Now, up the top here, you have wing mirrors with piano black up the top there.
02:57 You have LED indicator in there, and also a camera there for the 360 camera.
03:01 You've got chrome garnish down here, and I like this little inset as well.
03:04 It's a cool little design element there.
03:07 Now, along the side here, you've got privacy glass roof rails there, in addition to a glass
03:12 roof, and then come around to the back.
03:14 Down the side here, you've got LED taillights that kind of whip around from the side of
03:18 the car to the rear.
03:19 Up the top there, you've got a shark fin aerial.
03:21 Now, the roof is interesting.
03:22 You've got the black section that is optional, depending on which colour you go for, but
03:26 the spoiler is also black here as well with that stop lamp integrated into there.
03:30 Nissan logo here with X-Trail.
03:33 Down here, e-force again with that 4.
03:35 E-power over here, so people don't forget that you're driving a hybrid, and then as
03:39 you go further down, you've got that chrome setup down there as well.
03:43 Now, let me know in the comments section below, what do you think about the design here of
03:47 X-Trail?
03:48 It is a big departure from the previous version, but keen to see what your feedback is.
03:52 Do you like the look of X-Trail, and are you excited for the e-power version when it finally
03:56 does land in Australia?
03:57 So we are inside the X-Trail.
03:59 We'll start off with the key.
04:00 This is what it looks like.
04:01 So you have the Nissan logo up the top, lock, unlock, boot.
04:05 You have a metallic garnish around the edge there as well that's cold to the touch, and
04:08 then blank on the back.
04:09 Now, this is a proximity sensing key, so you can just leave that in your pocket, and then
04:12 once you're inside, you have a push-button start down here.
04:15 So this interior, it actually looks really high-end and premium.
04:18 So this particular car here, the specs kind of align with what we're getting in Australia.
04:22 This will be considered the TIL, so the top, top spec in Australia.
04:26 And that actually means you're getting this sort of material along the top here that is
04:29 soft to the touch.
04:30 It's like a leatherette.
04:31 You have a bit of wood grain down the bottom there as well.
04:34 What feels like wood grain, I'm sure it's not real wood.
04:36 And I like the fact that they've done away with a lot of piano black here.
04:39 So this centre section here is this serrated material, and it means that you're not getting
04:43 rafts of piano black, which marks easily and is just a little bit nasty.
04:47 So glad they've done away with that.
04:48 Oh, by the way, there's a little bit of noise outside, so...
04:54 Sorry about all that.
04:55 And I've also changed my clothes from the intro too, because we're filming on different
04:58 days, just in case you're wondering.
04:59 In terms of the rest of the interior here, these surfaces are all soft to the touch.
05:03 So this one here is kind of firm, but a little bit soft, and then on the door, it is soft
05:07 to the touch as well.
05:08 So everything feels nice.
05:10 In terms of the build quality, so this stuff, it feels really firm.
05:15 And I remember when we drove the Outlander, it had a little bit of flex in it.
05:18 This is built in Japan, so I don't know if it's assembled differently to the Outlander,
05:21 but to me, it actually feels like it is a whole lot sturdier than something like the
05:25 Outlander is.
05:26 Righto, let's talk about the infotainment system.
05:29 I think this is kind of the centrepiece of the entire cabin, and it just gives it quite
05:34 a bit of presence here.
05:35 And look, if you sit this next to something like an Outlander with that smaller display,
05:40 this looks a whole lot more premium than that.
05:42 So this is a 12.3-inch display.
05:44 You also get a 12.3-inch display ahead of the driver that I'll run you through in a
05:47 second.
05:48 We have already done a detailed review of this already, so if you do want to have a
05:52 look at that, go to the link in the description below.
05:54 You can have a bit more of a feel for what it'll look like in Australia.
05:58 But here for the European version, they have things like Alexa and also the ability to
06:01 search through Google using the button at the top here.
06:04 But for the most part, it is going to be similar in terms of the rest of the operation.
06:07 So you have in-built satellite navigation, and then shortcut buttons down the bottom
06:11 here in addition to down the side.
06:13 In terms of smartphone mirroring, it comes with wireless Apple CarPlay and wired Android
06:18 Auto.
06:19 In addition to that, you also have a 10-speaker Bose-branded sound system.
06:23 And we don't know exactly how much of this is going to be coming to Australia, but in
06:26 terms of the features you see here, I'm pretty excited by this, because AM/FM radio, Bose-branded
06:32 sound system and all the smartphone mirroring connectivity means you are going to get a
06:35 fully featured system.
06:36 Then ahead of the driver, you have a 12.3-inch display that you can configure and change as
06:41 you so desire.
06:42 This is also where you'll see information about the drive modes and also where the energy
06:47 is coming from within the car.
06:48 So I'm excited to see what that looks like when we do finally go for a drive as well.
06:52 Now in terms of your safety tech, there are a couple of variances between Europe and Australia,
06:56 but I'll run you through the high-level stuff.
06:57 So autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection, auto-dimming rear vision
07:02 mirror, radar cruise control.
07:04 This also has ProPILOT+ which is like a semi-autonomous steering function with semi-autonomous parking
07:10 as well.
07:11 In addition to that, rear cross-traffic alert, front cross-traffic alert and then you also
07:15 get front and rear parking sensors and a 360 camera.
07:18 Now in terms of your practicality features, you have wireless phone charging which is
07:24 good, you have a USB-C port, a USB-A port, a 12-volt outlet down the bottom here as well.
07:29 In terms of storage, you have stacks of storage around here.
07:32 So for your phone, you can whack it here in the cup holders or down on the wireless phone
07:35 charger and then bottles.
07:37 This is my European pool bottle that fits in there without any problems.
07:42 There's no teeth though, so if you do have a larger bottle, it's going to move around
07:45 a bit and then you have room inside the doors as well.
07:47 In terms of your other storage, centre console here is nice and deep and in addition to that,
07:52 you also have glove box over here that's pretty reasonably sized as well plus a sunglasses
07:58 holder as well.
07:59 And what about your comfort?
08:00 Well you've got dual-zone automatic climate control up the front here.
08:03 You have heated seats, a heated steering wheel.
08:05 In terms of the seat adjustments, 10-way power adjustment, so you can go forwards, backwards,
08:10 backrest can go forwards, backwards.
08:12 You can lift the front, lift the back.
08:14 You then have lumbar support.
08:16 Passenger seat is electrically adjustable and you have memory for both the driver and
08:19 front passenger.
08:21 Steering wheel has both tilt and reach adjustment and on our reach test, all of this stuff is
08:26 easy to reach while you're driving and it is worth pointing out with the seats, we've
08:29 spent a stack of time driving this car now and the seats are incredibly comfortable as
08:34 well so that is definitely a good thing.
08:36 So second row of the X-Trail, let's talk about legroom to start with.
08:40 So knee room is actually pretty decent, toe room is good and headroom is really good as
08:45 well despite the fact we have this big roof up the top here.
08:48 The other interesting thing too, just as the car switches off there, the other interesting
08:52 thing too is how low the driveline tunnel is.
08:55 Obviously this only has an electric motor at the rear and the front so there's no physical
08:58 driveline connection but it is cool to see that they have actually thought about that
09:03 and reduced that tunnel to make getting across the cabin even easier.
09:06 In terms of your creature comforts, you have air vents in the back here, you've got mat
09:10 pockets, you have seat heating for the two outboard seats, a third zone of climate control,
09:15 USB-C, USB-A as well.
09:18 These two seats, they're a 60/40 split fold with kind of like a 20 section in the centre
09:23 there but you can actually move the seats forwards and backwards so this can afford
09:28 you extra room in the boot as well and given this is a seven seater here but won't be a
09:33 seven seater in Australia, it does mean that you can afford more legroom for the third
09:37 row as well should you so desire.
09:39 I love the fact that they've continued the theme with the seats and the interior finishes
09:43 into the back here as well, it's not just limited to the front, you still get those
09:47 really nice looking seats there.
09:48 Bottles, so you can drop this centre armrest here, you have two cup holders there, no teeth
09:54 in there so your bottle does move round a little bit and then you have storage for the
09:57 bottle inside the door too.
09:59 And in terms of kids, you have ISOFIX points on the two outboard seats with three top tether
10:04 points as well and sorry about all the noise, they're literally deciding to construct a
10:08 building, the second the camera comes on all of the noise begins so that is why you're
10:11 hearing everything out there at the moment.
10:13 And then the final thing in the back here, look at this, up and down so you can pop these
10:18 up to give kids a little bit of shade.
10:20 And finally our window test, look at that, auto down and up, doesn't quite go down all
10:25 the way but pretty close anyway.
10:27 So let's talk about cargo space, we'll crack this boot open, it's a powered tailgate and
10:31 made of plastic as well by the way to save weight.
10:34 So this is the seven seat version, we won't get seven seats in Australia but in terms
10:38 of cargo space it comes in at just under 600 litres, you're about 10 litres down on the
10:42 internal combustion version.
10:44 Beneath the cargo floor here because you don't have a spare tyre, you have a tyre repair
10:47 kit and then off to the side you have a 12 volt outlet.
10:51 If you do want more space though you can drop that second row, fold that out of the way
10:57 and that will give you a fairly flat load floor as well.
11:00 So we've just hit the road in the X-Trail, now this is a fairly complex setup here in
11:06 terms of how this operates, so I'll run through it step by step.
11:09 So to start with it has an internal combustion engine under the bonnet, so that internal
11:13 combustion engine, one and a half litre, three cylinder turbocharged petrol.
11:16 It makes 106 kilowatts of power on 91 RON fuel and 116 kilowatts of power if you put
11:23 95 or 98 through it, and then in addition to that it also puts out 250 newton metres
11:28 of torque.
11:30 It is directly connected to a generator and the generator then powers an inverter.
11:35 An inverter then powers a small battery, it's 1.8 kilowatt hours usable, and then in addition
11:41 to that the inverter then powers two electric motors that sit on the front and rear axle.
11:45 They make 150 kilowatts of power up the front, 100 kilowatts at the rear, and then if you
11:50 look at the torque numbers, 330 newton metres of torque out of the front one and 195 newton
11:56 metres of torque at the rear.
11:58 If you do combine all of that together it gives you a peak power output of 157 kilowatts
12:02 of power and over 500 newton metres of torque from zero RPM.
12:07 So I know that I've thrown a whole bunch of information there at you, but those figures
12:11 give you an idea of, I guess, just how complex this setup is.
12:16 And in addition to that the internal combustion engine, it actually has peak RPM of something
12:20 like 4700 RPM, so it has variable compression ratio, and it means that you're not getting
12:25 a great deal of noise inside the cabin.
12:27 So what does all that feel like?
12:29 Well, when you get on the throttle it feels like an EV, so when you lean into the throttle
12:34 it ramps up like an EV.
12:35 In addition to that you rarely ever get the internal combustion engine making a whole
12:39 bunch of noise inside the cabin.
12:40 It is really quiet and subdued, you don't have a transmission so it doesn't have that
12:44 CVT feeling that you get in something like a RAV4 as well.
12:48 So in terms of that it is quite a comprehensive package in the way that it works.
12:53 Now I will point out as well that there's no direct connection between the internal
12:56 combustion engine and the wheels.
12:58 So in Honda's hybrid products, for example, you do have some instances where the internal
13:02 combustion engine can directly drive the wheels.
13:05 Here it's always running a generator, which is always powering an inverter, which is then
13:09 either supplying energy to the battery system or to the wheels directly.
13:13 And you can have instances where the car will actually run just on electric alone, and you
13:18 can actually push the EV button here.
13:20 When you do that it kills the internal combustion engine entirely.
13:23 But if you do sort of step on the throttle it all fires back up to life because it gives
13:27 you sort of a warning here.
13:29 So it is only for light throttle applications, but it is sort of quite interesting with the
13:32 way that it works.
13:33 And then in addition to all of that, the battery is what gives you the difference between those
13:39 power figures.
13:40 So even though the internal combustion engine makes 116 kilowatts of power, the rest of
13:44 that power to make up 157 actually comes from the battery system.
13:48 And you might be asking yourself, how can you possibly get 66-odd kilowatts of power
13:54 from the battery system, and how long can that last for before it overheats?
13:58 These guys actually tested this car at top speed, at max load, with a roof rack on for
14:04 increased wind resistance on the highest grade on the Autobahn, and basically didn't drain
14:10 the battery.
14:11 It was like a 13-kilometre stretch.
14:12 So yeah, pretty impressive setup, and for all intents and purposes it actually worked
14:16 quite well.
14:17 The thing I'm finding really surprising here is how quiet this is.
14:21 Yes, it is a small internal combustion engine, but you really don't hear a thing behind the
14:25 wheel.
14:26 It is so quiet just as it cruises along.
14:29 Such an impressive setup, and they've done a really good job here in just integrating
14:32 that into the entire system.
14:34 There is another drive mode here that I'll call out as well.
14:36 It's called e-pedal, so you give that a flick, and what that does is it allows you to do
14:40 single pedal driving.
14:41 In e-pedal mode it will provide up to 0.2 G of deceleration, so as you roll out of the
14:46 throttle it will come gradually to a halt, and you can actually feel it applying the
14:51 brake pedal.
14:52 It doesn't come to a complete stop though, which I find completely bizarre, because e-pedal
14:55 in Nissan LEAF comes to a complete stop.
14:57 Here it sort of brings you down to a low speed and then it rolls on a little bit, which I
15:01 don't think is all that good.
15:02 I would prefer if it actually came to a complete stop and then held the car.
15:06 Now Nissan claims that this will do a combined fuel economy of 6.1 litres per 100 km.
15:11 It's actually a really healthy figure, not quite as good as RAV4 Hybrid.
15:14 I've seen that well and truly below 6 litres per 100 km, but it will give you that efficiency
15:19 that you need.
15:20 Part of the problem as well is that you're adding about 200 to 300 kilos of extra weight,
15:24 depending on which spec of X-Trail that you go for, adding all of these hybrid components
15:28 in.
15:29 So by doing that it's not really, I guess you're adding weight to gain efficiency, but
15:34 ultimately adding weight will always reduce the efficiency levels.
15:37 So if this did have a smaller battery like the RAV4 Hybrid, you might get a little better
15:41 efficiency out of that, but 6.1 is pretty good.
15:44 We will test this in Australia to see exactly what it's like.
15:47 This launch program has had a whole bunch of twisty roads and hills and all that sort
15:50 of stuff, so when we do get the car back to Australia, we'll see exactly how it fares
15:53 on our roads under our test conditions.
15:55 Let's talk about the fuel tank quickly.
15:57 55 litres, so 6.1 litres per 100 km, 55 litres, you're going to get a decent amount of range
16:01 out of that.
16:02 The reason they didn't go with a bigger fuel tank is obviously, the bigger the fuel tank,
16:06 the less efficient it's going to be in the long run.
16:07 Now on the towing front, you have a brake towing capacity of 1,650 kilos, not a huge
16:12 amount but it should be enough if you want to tow anything small.
16:15 Given this is all-wheel drive, it's probably not going to be a bad option as well.
16:18 Now what's it like through some corners?
16:20 Let's put this into sport mode.
16:22 There it is there, we've got a couple of tight bends coming up here.
16:28 It's actually quite nice and responsive.
16:33 Now this all-wheel drive system actually has torque vectoring built into it as well, so
16:38 between the rear wheels and also the front wheels, it's actually able to shuffle torque
16:43 between them as required.
16:44 So when you get into some of these tighter bends here, all you're doing is just feeding
16:48 on the throttle and it tucks in really nicely.
16:52 There is a little bit of body roll because it is slightly heavier but it actually feels
16:57 quite sporty through the corners.
16:59 And I kind of got that vibe from Outlander Plug-in Hybrid as well, it kind of has that
17:04 sporty edge to it which you're not expecting in a vehicle like this.
17:07 So yeah, pretty impressed with that.
17:10 Now what's it like off-road?
17:11 We're going to do just a little bit of light off-roading, so we'll head to that section
17:14 now and let you know what I think.
17:16 So we are at our off-road course.
17:18 It's actually pretty interesting, so there's a couple of little axle cross-ups here, we've
17:23 got a hill descent, a little acceleration section as well, so we'll see how it goes.
17:27 So this has a number of drive modes here, so you have off-road, snow, highway, sport
17:32 and eco.
17:33 I'm going to flick this into off-road, it comes up saying off-road mode there on the
17:38 camera.
17:39 By the way there's someone here in the car with me to make sure I don't break anything.
17:42 The first section here is the axle crossing, so this is designed to basically get a wheel
17:47 up in the air and get the traction control system working.
17:52 So I think when they talk about X-Trail, people have a lot of memories of X-Trail of old,
17:57 being able to sort of do some light off-roading, and I think it's this type of terrain that
18:00 people are going to be doing.
18:01 Like, you know, this is the kind of thing that we do on our light off-road course, and
18:06 it kind of just puts some stress on the car and it makes it have to work a little bit.
18:11 Up here we've got a sort of pretty decent angle that we're on here that the car will
18:17 then drop down.
18:18 The thing I'm noticing with the off-road mode, it's giving just a little bit more slip on
18:23 the wheels as well.
18:24 Now the other feature as well here, we've seen this on some of the bigger four-wheel
18:27 drives, is the forward-facing camera for off-road.
18:30 So right now as we come to crest this, we can see over the top of that, because I can't
18:34 actually see anything until we get there.
18:36 So that is definitely a useful feature to have, and it means that it will track your
18:40 journey as you go.
18:41 Now, this is the bit I'm interested in.
18:43 So this kind of simulates what we do in our light off-road course, where we have one side
18:48 of the track is basically a loose surface, and it forces the traction control system
18:52 to figure out what to do.
18:53 So I'm going to drive up to here, come to a full stop on the logs, and then I'm going
18:59 to roll on the throttle.
19:00 And now we have a situation where this side of the car has low traction, that one has
19:04 more traction, and we're forcing the all-wheel drive system to actually do a whole lot more
19:10 work.
19:11 That is pretty impressive.
19:12 It kind of just grapples a little bit, hooks up, and then away it goes.
19:14 Okay, next up is our hill descent control.
19:18 Now we'll see how this works.
19:20 There's like a steep drop-off here, so I'm going to just pop the car over the edge here,
19:25 and we will enable hill descent control using this button.
19:28 I'll just let go of the brake as it creeps over this hill.
19:31 There it is, it holds it in nicely.
19:35 I have mentioned before in our videos that I don't love using hill descent control, simply
19:40 because I prefer to just have control over the car.
19:44 But that's okay, it is there just in case you need to use that feature.
19:47 Okay, and final thing we're going to be doing here is logs.
19:50 This is the comfort test, like our rock section back home on our light off-road course.
19:55 This is just designed to give you an idea of what this feels like on this rough terrain.
19:59 Yes, I mentioned while we were out for a drive, despite this being on 20-inch alloy wheels,
20:03 it actually feels pretty nice and comfortable, and this is kind of worst-case scenario, logs
20:08 like this.
20:09 It actually feels really nice over this, so yeah, not too bad.
20:13 So there you go.
20:14 That was the off-road course in the X-Trail.
20:20 So that's been your first look at the new Nissan X-Trail Hybrid, the e-Power e-Force.
20:26 If you did enjoy this video, please make sure you leave a comment down below.
20:29 Let me know what you think of the car.
20:30 What do you think of the pricing?
20:32 It is a little expensive.
20:33 It will be in Australia in early 2023, and we'll do a proper full-length review of that
20:38 when it does lob in Aus.
