Researchers at Swiss university ETH Zurich created a humanlike robotic hand using new 3D printing technology to create more sophisticated prosthetics.

00:03 We used MRI data that is openly available to model
00:14 all the bone structures, just like in an actual human hand.
00:18 And then we have sections of soft tendons and capsules
00:22 around the joint areas and tendons
00:26 that are internally reinforced with a rigid material
00:29 to have a load-bearing structure.
00:31 And then here, we have fishing line tendons
00:34 that interface with the actually printed tendons
00:38 and connect them to these motors down here.

00:47 Because you have the ability to scan and to design it
01:09 individually for the person that needs it,
01:11 this will be a step towards more customized prosthetics.
01:15 We obviously have lots of work to do
01:16 to make that step of integration from a medical perspective.
01:20 But this is definitely going to be a way of customizing it
01:23 and making your own specific prosthesis.
