What does a redesigned engine with a higher compression ratio do for Husqvarna’s 450cc motocross bike? The Dirt Rider dyno tells the tale.

--

When Husqvarna unveiled its completely revamped FC 450 Rockstar Edition last year, that all but told us the Austrian brand’s motocross lineup would be all-new in 2023. Sure enough, that was the case. Husky’s latest-generation motocrossers were given a new frame, subframe, swingarm, shock, and bodywork. Powerplant updates were model-specific, and the flagship FC 450 received plenty including a redesigned cylinder head and higher compression ratio of 13.1:1 (up from 12.75:1 on 2019–2022 models).

With a Dunlop D404 street tire mounted on the rear wheel, we ran Husqvarna’s flagship motocross bike on our in-house dyno, documenting peak figures of 53.7 hp at 9,500 rpm and 33.2 lb.-ft. of torque at 7,800 rpm. Compared to last year, the FC 450 churns out more horsepower and torque from 3,300 rpm to 4,000 rpm and from 10,500 rpm to 11,200 rpm. At peak, it produces 0.2 hp more and 0.5 lb.-ft. of torque less. The Husqvarna finished one step off the podium in Dirt Rider’s 2023 450 Motocross Shootout, but it wasn’t for a lack of power on the dyno or track.
