00:00 After a pro wrestling career two decades long, has John Cena anticlimactically left WWE for
00:05 good?
00:06 Will he ever break his record tying 16 World Championship wins?
00:10 And why did WWE job him out twice in his final run?
00:15 Breaking news!
00:16 WWE fans can't see John Cena.
00:20 Because he's gone.
00:21 And will likely never be coming back full time ever again.
00:31 Despite a record breaking 17th World Championship chase storyline being right there, John Cena
00:37 didn't beat Solo Sakura Crown Jewel to set up a Roman Reigns match at the Royal Rumble.
00:42 In fact, quite the opposite.
00:43 He got thumbed in the throat 11 times by Sakoa in the most shocking Cena loss since Brock
00:48 Lesnar took him to Suplex City at SummerSlam 2014.
00:52 After the match, Cena struggled to his feet, expertly somehow not selling his throat from
00:56 all those Samoan spikes - great job, John - and walked out to a standing ovation from
01:01 the Saudi crowd.
01:03 Because teasing retirement these days is as part of a Cena match as hitting a flying shoulder
01:07 block, doing the Five Knuckle Shuffle or saying a WrestleMania is coming to your city.
01:12 The following week, Cena seemingly confirmed his WWE retirement by posting the Looney Tunes
01:16 credits background with the text 'The End'.
01:20 Well that's all folks, John Cena has unceremoniously officially retired from WWE.
01:25 I guess it's a… oh, actually, just one more thing.
01:29 The End could also be in reference to the end of the Hollywood Actors Strike, which
01:34 happened the same week.
01:36 But I guess that's it.
01:37 That's the only thing that 'The End' could mean.
01:39 Oh, just one more thing.
01:42 Because a lot more likely, The End could refer to his $70 million live action CGI hybrid
01:47 Coyote vs Acme Looney Tunes movie that he'd shot a year beforehand, the Warner Bros reportedly
01:52 just decided to shelve because they don't know what they're doing.
01:56 Which is probably slightly concerning for AEW, because that's the same company they've
02:00 got to renegotiate their TV rights deals with.
02:02 So John isn't retiring.
02:04 It's just another one of his weird Instagram- Oh, ok, he also posted a shot of baseball
02:08 legend Babe Ruth retiring in 1935.
02:12 I'm not going to lie, that's a lot more specific.
02:14 So what is going on with John?
02:16 Despite rumours he could appear at Survivor Series, when we all know that surprise spot
02:20 is reserved for CM Punk, who is also under the Devil Mask in AEW - CM Punk returned to
02:25 both WWE and AEW confirmed - Cena undergoing surgery after his solo match ruled that out,
02:32 with him posting on X "Thank you @JeffDouglasMD and your entire team in Birmingham.
02:36 One arm fixed, clean and headed for therapy.
02:39 One arm left to go.
02:40 Thank you again and see you ASAP for the next one."
02:43 Dave Meltzer has confirmed on Wrestling Observer Radio that Cena needed surgery on both elbows
02:48 following his September-November WWE run.
02:51 Which is quite concerning, given he only wrestled seven matches and didn't do much in them.
02:57 Just like Babe Ruth had to retire because he could no longer stand the physical toll
03:01 on his body, perhaps Cena was referencing his own ageing condition when he posted that
03:06 picture on Instagram.
03:08 Because when you make a list of it, Cena has racked up a fair few injuries over his career.
03:13 Here are just the major ones that required surgery in reverse chronological order just
03:17 for you, Tempest.
03:19 Afforementioned double elbow surgery in 2023.
03:22 Shoulder surgery in 2016.
03:24 Torn triceps against Daniel Bryan at SummerSlam 2013.
03:28 Achilles tendon injury a few months before that in 2013.
03:32 Surgery to remove bone chips from his elbow in 2012.
03:34 That's so gross.
03:36 A herniated disc in 2008.
03:39 And a torn pectoral muscle in 2007.
03:42 But this is Super Cena.
03:44 He loves pro wrestling, and he loves us.
03:47 And that passion, that unstoppable drive, means he'll be fighting fit three to four
03:51 months earlier than any recommended recovery period in time to wow us all with a WrestleMania
03:57 40 return.
03:59 Probably not, though, because of the much bigger reason Cena's 2023 appearances were
04:03 likely his last ever proper WWE run.
04:12 To understand why John Cena has left WWE, we can simply look at the reason he returned
04:17 in the first place.
04:18 All his other work stopped.
04:21 He had nothing else to do.
04:23 2023's Hot Strike Summer saw professions from junior doctors in the UK to autoworkers
04:28 in the United States walking out to demand better pay and working conditions from their
04:32 employers.
04:33 But not wrestlers, because they're too self-interested to ever start their own union.
04:38 On the 14th July, 2023, the Screen Actors Guild joined Hot Strike Summer, combining
04:43 it with the Writers Guild of America's strike already in action, grinding Hollywood's
04:47 movie and TV production to a halt.
04:50 Barbie didn't even get a real press tour because of it.
04:53 That meant that Cena's very active movie career - he released six films in 2023 alone
04:57 - suddenly had no shoots.
05:00 In a scheduling fluke that might never happen again, Cena had two to three months to do
05:05 WWE without it affecting anyone's movie production.
05:09 That's why The Rock could make a surprise appearance just to bury Austin Theory on the
05:12 15th September SmackDown 2.
05:15 And The Rock didn't even return to WWE for his own 25th anniversary celebration at Survivor
05:20 Series the year previously.
05:22 No matter how desperately WWE tried for it.
05:25 Ah, the Pizza Hut battle royal.
05:27 What more fitting tribute to The Rock's career.
05:29 Dave Meltzer has confirmed on Wrestling Observer Radio the only reason John Cena is back is
05:34 because of the strike.
05:36 But why take Dave Meltzer's reporting word about John Cena, when you can literally take
05:40 John Cena's word about John Cena?
05:43 At the Fastlane press conference following his and LA Knight's defeat of the Bloodline,
05:47 Cena said "I've made it clear that you can't do both WWE and Hollywood because
05:52 of the liability insurance.
05:54 If I were to try and juggle both, that's very selfish because that would put a whole
05:58 lot of people in the movie business out of work if something were to happen to me."
06:04 Interestingly, the liability insurance now required by any big budget movie starring
06:09 an ex-wrestler that might sneak in a few cheeky WrestleMania matches was kind of caused by
06:13 Cena himself.
06:15 A decade ago, Rock tore his abdominal and abductor muscles and suffered a hernia in
06:19 his and Cena's twice in a lifetime match at WrestleMania 29.
06:24 Weeks before, Rock was set to start filming on the big budget Hercules movie.
06:28 He had to undergo surgery, which delayed production and cost that studio millions of dollars.
06:34 Ever since, major movie studios haven't allowed any of their ex-pro wrestler roster
06:39 like Rock, Cena and Batista to wrestle matches if they're booked in for filming.
06:45 Which is why Cena admits that he has to make a binary choice.
06:49 He's all wrestling, and these days, with his ageing body, he chooses movies.
06:54 On the 9th November, the Screen Actors Guild announced their 118 day strike would end.
07:00 Me and everyone could return to work the next day, just several days after Cena's last
07:04 appearance for WWE at Crown Jewel.
07:07 That's right, Cena's final ever substantial WWE run could've ended in Saudi Arabia.
07:14 But there's always a chance, even with injury or acting schedule, that Cena could come back
07:19 to WWE.
07:20 If not for a lengthy run, then maybe for a one-off big time match here and there.
07:24 But if Cena and WWE went into these two months knowing it was one of the last committed runs
07:29 of his career, why was he booked to lose to mid-carders?
07:32 Cena's run began with his return on the 1st September episode of SmackDown, for him
07:37 to appear on every SmackDown episode for the next two months - apart from September 8th
07:41 as he was doing another WWE show in India.
07:44 He wrestled seven matches total, with four dark match main events after SmackDown went
07:49 off air, the India-based Superstar Spectacle tag match, and two Premium Live Event matches.
07:55 Even made a non-wrestling appearance on an episode of NXT.
07:58 Totally not related to AEW.
08:00 Dave Meltzer has reported Cena was a proven live event ticket mover during this run.
08:04 Even though WWE was already doing well with the likes of Roman Reigns and Cody Rhodes,
08:09 Cena being on weekly SmackDown shows pushed them to over 10,000 every single week on Friday
08:16 night.
08:17 He is a mover, he is a difference maker.
08:20 Attendance, which is closer to a B-level pay-per-view show in the Attitude Era than an episode of
08:26 TV audience.
08:27 And WWE used that mainstream exposure to put over younger talent.
08:31 In 2023, Cena lost to Austin Theory after a few week storyline heading into WrestleMania
08:37 39, where Cena just pointed out how rubbish Theory was in the build.
08:40 Great job building up your opponent, John!
08:43 And then kind of did the same for Solo Sakoa, calling him a bargain basement Taz ripoff
08:47 before losing clean to him too.
08:49 This might be a sign of how WWE will use legends under Triple H.
08:54 Under the last decade of Vince McMahon, veteran performers with mainstream appeal would be
08:58 used at the expense of younger stars.
09:01 Like all the times 50 year old Plus Goldberg beat your favourite wrestler for their world
09:05 title.
09:06 But there is another way.
09:08 In New Japan, when wrestlers hit a certain advanced age, they're transitioned out
09:13 of the main event scene to make kayfabe more believable.
09:16 What other sports have 50 or 60 year olds credibly competing with athletes half their
09:20 age?
09:21 That's why even still terrifying wrestlers like Murder Grandpa Minoru Suzuki aren't
09:26 used in the G1 Climax.
09:28 It seems Triple H is far more concerned with building stars for the future than giving
09:32 legends one last title run.
09:34 Even if it is hit or miss.
09:36 Every beating Cena clean feels like it did nothing for him.
09:39 But Solos was a far bigger victory, very likely building him for an eventual match against
09:44 Reigns.
09:45 And once Solo has become one of the top stars in WWE, he can also leave for Hollywood.
09:50 It's the Circle of Life.
09:53 Just like how WWE steals a lot of talent from the indies in Japan, modern Hollywood does
09:58 the same to WWE.
10:00 There's always a bigger fish.
10:02 It makes sense for the wrestlers too.
10:04 As Cena's multiple surgeries have shown, there's only so many bumps your body can
10:08 take.
10:09 With acting, you've got stunt people to do that for you, and you get paid more money.
10:13 That's why so many wrestlers throughout the last several decades have made the transition.
10:17 Hulk Hogan, The Rock, Stone Cold, Batista, even Cena.
10:22 WWE's current top star Roman Reigns is reportedly considering this move in the near future.
10:27 He's already appeared in The Rock's Hobson/Shaw Fast and Furious spin-off movie, and WWE CEO
10:32 Nick Khan has admitted "there are a lot of conversations going on.
10:36 We fully support that."
10:38 Meanwhile, WWE's top female star Becky Lynch has appeared in multiple film and TV projects,
10:43 and Jade Cargill has revealed that a future transition to Hollywood played a role in her
10:48 leaving AEW for WWE, as WWE will give her a bigger profile.
10:54 If only WWE had some kind of link to one of the biggest Hollywood talent agencies on the
10:58 planet.
10:59 Oh yeah, they're half owned by them.
11:01 In what might play out as a big story over the coming years, one of the more interesting
11:06 parts of WWE's 2023 merger with the UFC into TKO Holdings is that it's half owned
11:13 by Endeavor, one of the top three talent agencies in Hollywood.
11:17 This could significantly alter the path of top WWE stars leaving for the movies.
11:22 By having such a powerful, associated talent agency, Endeavor could call WWE stars up to
11:28 the main movie roster, retaining talent in the larger corporate ecosystem, and making
11:33 them much more available to do scheduled wrestling returns.
11:36 Funnily enough, the Hollywood reporter Wright Cena changed his agent in 2022, leaving ICM
11:43 partners after 18 years to move to WME.
11:47 And WME is owned by Endeavor.
11:51 Are you happy if this is John Cena's last proper run with WWE?
11:54 Let me know in the comments down below.
11:56 Me personally, I didn't want him to win his 17th world title, but I definitely wanted
12:00 the story of him chasing it.
12:02 And let me know what you think of these deeper dive videos.
12:04 It was really interesting to read your comments on my real reason Roman Reigns always wins
12:08 video.
12:09 Speaking of… go watch that right now!
