00:00 We're here at the 2005 New York Auto Show, surrounded by more than half a century of
00:13 Jeep heritage.
00:14 To take a look at the next historical milestone, the Jeep Commander, the largest SUV the brand
00:20 has ever offered.
00:21 Its size is measured not only in its length, but also in its seating, being the first Jeep
00:25 product to have three full seating rows.
00:28 This is based on the Grand Cherokee platform and wheelbase.
00:32 Now, being a large vehicle and a short wheelbase is going to give it tremendous maneuverability
00:36 off-road and in parking lots.
00:38 It also shares some powertrains with the Grand Cherokee, the 4.7 liter V8, the 5.7 liter
00:45 V8, and for the base model, it'll use a 3.7 liter V6.
00:51 This vehicle draws from Jeep's rich heritage, pulling inspiration from previous Willys station
00:57 wagons.
00:58 The previous generation Cherokee, and clearly, the modern design cues with flat vertical
01:04 siding and dramatic edging around the wheel arches.
01:08 We're looking forward to this vehicle hitting dealerships in the fall, as well as another
01:12 exciting model.
01:14 That's the Grand Cherokee SRT8, the highest performance Jeep ever offered.
01:18 Now, this vehicle's from the Special Street Racing Technology Group at Chrysler, and it's
01:23 really taken the Grand Cherokee to the extremes, the extremes on-road.
01:28 It has the highest performance Hemi engine offered, and with 415 horsepower and 410 pound-feet
01:33 of torque, it's got a lowered suspension, and the whole vehicle has been tuned for optimum
01:37 on-road performance and handling.
01:40 Both of these vehicles are key in the rejuvenation of the Jeep product line, which is going to
01:45 see new models added in the near future.
01:47 Jeep has teased us with many concepts, giving us a hint of things to come, but this was
01:52 definitely a pleasant surprise.
01:54 The Commander is a vehicle that we never saw in concept form, and it has shown us that
01:58 we'd better keep our eye on Jeep, because they've got some interesting things in the
02:01 mix.
02:02 This is Jeff Bartlett reporting from Camp Jeep New York, the 2005 New York Auto Show.
