00:00 [BLANK_AUDIO]
00:06 It was great to see us come out in the second half and play the way we did.
00:12 I was really disappointed in our offense the first half.
00:17 Honestly, this is the first group of guys I've ever been around,
00:22 as a player or a coach, that the offense was ahead of the defense.
00:28 And the first half, you wouldn't have thought that.
00:31 I just didn't think we shared the ball.
00:33 That's one of the things that I really emphasized all summer,
00:40 all fall, to have great ball movement.
00:44 And I was just really disappointed at that.
00:47 When we don't share the ball, we're not a good team.
00:49 Listen, I'm honest with our guys and
00:54 I tell them we're not a great one-on-one team, so you gotta move the ball.
00:59 You gotta create advantages.
01:01 And those were a lot of the things that I brought with me from the NBA.
01:06 And once you create advantages, you gotta be able to make them pay.
01:09 In the second half, that roll guy, for instance, had been open all game.
01:13 And once we were able to get the ball to our roll guys,
01:17 then tied to his credit, shoots.
01:20 He'd only been back about three, four days.
01:23 He just got his cast off.
01:25 But he's a warrior.
01:26 He played his butt off.
01:29 He made great passes.
01:32 He's one of the best out of area rebounders that I've seen.
01:36 And he really got us going.
01:38 I thought we made shots.
01:40 I wanna give a shout out to Debo Coleman as well.
01:43 I thought Debo really played well.
01:45 It can't be easy for Debo.
01:48 I know how it is to go from being viewed one way, and
01:53 then all of a sudden he's coming off the bench.
01:58 But the thing about Debo is you can view Debo as we have six starters.
02:05 I thought he did a really good job.
02:07 He shot the ball really well.
02:09 I thought Kyle really came in and picked us up.
02:11 He did some great things, and he helped us get the ball moving.
02:16 And to me, Miles is Miles.
02:19 The biggest thing with Miles for me is I think when he makes the easy play,
02:23 I think the game gets easier for him.
02:26 The problem at times is, for me, and I tell all our guys,
02:31 you can't make home runs every play.
02:35 You can't get drafted every play.
02:38 You gotta play the game.
02:40 You gotta play the game.
02:42 What people wanna see is consistency.
02:44 And I think that once he did that, he made some great plays, he got off the bench.
02:48 Then he started making shots, and then that made it easier.
02:51 So overall, for game one, I was pleased.
02:55 >> Okay, questions?
02:56 Kelly, we'll get started.
02:57 >> It seemed like they were a little bit tight.
03:01 Even the free throws were a little short.
03:03 Were you sensing that early in the game, that maybe it was a little tightness?
03:08 >> I did, I did.
03:09 I think that it was.
03:11 I mean, again, first game, lights on.
03:14 I thought that we were tentative, a little bit on the offensive end,
03:20 not knowing, not playing the way that we,
03:22 I played in the secret scrimmage or the exhibition.
03:28 But to their credit, the defense was A plus.
03:32 I thought we played great defense.
03:34 We did everything that we talked about.
03:36 We can't let teams spread us out.
03:38 We did a great job of shrinking the floor.
03:41 We were in gaps all night long.
03:43 And that kept us in the game.
03:45 And the moment we decided that we were gonna relax, calm down,
03:49 pass the ball to one another, we started getting open shots.
03:52 And that's when the game changed.
03:54 >> All right.
03:55 >> Going back to Ty, after that first game,
04:01 you talked a little bit about the need for better rebounding.
04:05 And not only did you bring it out, but I guess those ten points was a bonus for
04:11 you in the scheme of things with all the scores you have on the team.
04:15 >> Yeah, no, Ty again, he's a lunch bell guy.
04:20 I appreciate guys like Ty.
04:22 I've played with a bunch of guys like him, built in that mold.
04:25 And I think he's deceiving out there a bit too.
04:29 He's really athletic.
04:31 He gives you his all, man, and that's all you can ask for.
04:34 He plays as hard as he can.
04:35 He'll raise his hand to come out.
04:37 You know what I mean?
04:37 It's kind of old school mentality.
04:39 But I really appreciate Ty.
04:41 I know the fellas do as well.
04:43 And I thought he had a great first game.
04:45 Again, he had been out a little over a month.
04:51 And to come back and then play the minutes that he did,
04:54 I thought that was a testament of what he's been doing with his conditioning
04:59 when he wasn't on the floor with us at practice.
05:03 >> Coach Steinmeier, congratulations on win number one.
05:09 Both of your players that are here tonight said that you coach them hard,
05:13 you give them confidence.
05:15 How did you both of those things consist of?
05:18 >> You know what I learned is that in practice you coach them.
05:21 You do all the things that probably people in here don't.
05:27 I can't tell you the way.
05:29 >> [LAUGH] >> But in the games,
05:32 I just feel like it's about giving the kids confidence.
05:37 I don't wanna show anybody up.
05:40 I just want them to play to the best of their ability.
05:44 So for me, practice is where I can act a fool, so to speak.
05:52 I overreact a lot, I do, in practice, but you'll never see that in a game.
05:57 Because again, I think that if a player makes a mistake and
06:01 he looks at his coach, he wants to see his coach has confidence in him.
06:05 And this is what I learned.
06:06 I learned this when I first got into coaching.
06:09 And I've shared this with everybody as I've moved forward.
06:14 You say things, you can't get them back.
06:17 And when you watch film, when you watch film, those kids have eyes.
06:24 And so they see your reaction,
06:26 they see what you're doing over there on that sideline.
06:28 You're showing them exactly if you believe in them or you don't believe in them.
06:32 There's a time or two where you're allowed to do that.
06:36 But if it's a consistent thing, at some point, that's gonna break a player down.
06:41 And they're gonna lose confidence.
06:42 So I want these guys to go on the floor with as much confidence as possible each
06:46 and every game.
06:46 >> Sure.
06:48 >> Lots of new players, new coach.
06:55 How would you assess how your transfers are meshing as a team after game one?
06:58 >> I think the transfers are doing well.
07:03 I think even with Tafar and Amar, I know they didn't play like they're capable of.
07:11 And I know they didn't play like they probably wanted to.
07:13 But I got a good group of guys.
07:15 They all get along.
07:16 They hang out together.
07:19 I see a group that's gonna grow.
07:22 And I think that there's a good mix of the guys that
07:27 will hold overs from the last team.
07:30 And then there's a good mix of the transfers that we brought in.
07:34 And with some of the younger players, the freshmen that we brought in.
07:37 So I love our group.
07:39 I think they're starting to buy in.
07:42 I think that they see that the things that we do work when we execute it,
07:46 when we play together.
07:47 >> Right.
07:49 >> Is there any update on when you expect to get Bayh and Lance back?
07:55 >> Lance, maybe after Thanksgiving.
08:02 And Bayh, I'm hoping at some point before maybe Cincinnati.
08:11 So maybe about another week, week and a half.
08:16 But really looking forward to getting both of those guys back because,
08:20 I mean, I've said it.
08:22 I think we got a really good team with really good players.
08:28 And we don't have a lot of separation.
08:30 So that makes competition great.
08:34 And I think adding those two in the equation will make us a deeper team.
08:39 And I love the fact that they put the onus on me.
08:43 But those are two really good players.
08:45 And I'm looking forward to getting them back.
08:46 >> Couple more for Coach Stoltenberg.
08:49 Go ahead, Cole.
08:49 >> One of the plays I found really interesting was the call to timeout,
08:56 six seconds on the shot clock.
08:57 And Miles kind of dribbles out and shoots three.
09:02 It seemed like that was an interesting call,
09:04 like a play you don't typically even see in college ball.
09:06 Is that like an NBA thing?
09:08 Like where did that one come from?
09:09 Or was that even executed the way you wanted to?
09:11 >> No, well, the play was executed, but they did a good job regarding it.
09:18 And I'm not gonna take credit for that.
09:21 By the time Miles caught that ball, he made a great shot.
09:23 That was a great shot.
09:24 You know what I mean?
09:26 I think sometimes we always say this, but
09:31 when guys make shots, make a coach look good, and when they don't,
09:37 you don't look as good.
09:38 So I'm not gonna sit up here and take credit for that.
09:41 That was a great play by Miles Kelly.
09:43 >> Anything else?
09:45 >> Patrick, if you wanna wrap this up.
09:48 >> One more question on the depth, coach.
09:51 You just mentioned you had two people looking to welcome back.
09:54 But when you have your brothers, about what type of rotation would you play,
09:58 7, 8, 9, or is there a magic number, or no magic number?
10:01 >> I don't have one.
10:03 I've always been a field guy, I kind of play with the game dictates.
10:09 I think that that's the type of team we have.
10:11 I think that you'll see a lot of different lineups against a lot of different teams.
10:15 And I'm still trying to figure everything out.
10:20 And I got this big old minutes card, but sometimes you gotta just go on field.
10:27 And that's pretty much what I do.
10:29 But I trust 11 of those guys to go out there and have success.
10:36 I'm not scared to go deep into the bench.
10:39 I think that you will see, we'll play smaller lineups against smaller teams.
10:43 We'll play bigger lineups against bigger teams.
10:46 So I'm not scared to do different things out there.
10:50 >> Okay, that it?
