10:12 >> Yep.
10:14 >> Good.
10:15 >> Just like everything else, welcome to the club.
10:17 >> All right, folks, we can open up the floor for questions.
10:21 Tim May, Letterman Rowe.
10:23 >> Ryan, just in a nutshell, it looks like Josh Proctor's play changed the game.
10:26 >> Yeah. >> I mean,
10:27 caught the interception and obviously goes out.
10:29 Was that exactly what y'all needed?
10:30 >> Yeah, I think so.
10:32 There was a point there in the second half we put the defense in a tough spot.
10:35 And two situations where Rutgers gets the ball and plus territory and
10:39 defense hung in there.
10:40 I thought that was really big again.
10:42 But the pick six certainly opened things up.
10:44 >> Dan Hope, Letterman Rowe.
10:47 >> Ryan, the fake punt in the first half, what is that decision?
10:51 >> It was not a fake punt.
10:53 And there was some miscommunication on that and that can't happen.
10:57 >> Steven Means, Cleveland.com.
10:59 >> Ryan, with Cade, what's the status of the defensive line?
11:02 You're not playing him today.
11:03 >> He was available and could have played, but
11:06 we just felt like it wasn't the right thing to do for him.
11:09 You talk about one of the tougher guys that we've been around at Ohio State.
11:13 My time here, but he's gonna say he can go and
11:16 it was a decision made to hold him back.
11:19 We'll look forward to getting him back next week.
11:21 >> Bill Rabinowitz, the dispatch.
11:23 >> Yeah, [INAUDIBLE]
11:29 >> Yeah.
11:30 >> [INAUDIBLE]
11:35 >> Yeah, I mean, it's a team game.
11:37 But yeah, I mean, the first half just got to be tough hanging in there.
11:42 And in some bad spots, and those guys are playing hard across the board.
11:48 And we were down a couple guys and the front and Tommy and
11:53 the proc to make that play.
11:56 I mean, he poured it up in there on that one.
11:59 He didn't break stride.
12:00 And Rutgers is physical, coming off of their bye, they were fresh and
12:04 ready to go and they played hard, they played us hard.
12:07 So we've had multiple weeks now, Penn State and
12:10 Wisconsin and now these guys, these have been physical weeks.
12:15 But our guys are playing hard, they're playing physical and
12:18 we're playing good football down the stretch.
12:21 We're wearing teams down in the second half.
12:23 But certainly we'd like to play better in the first half as a team.
12:25 >> Tony German, Buckeye Huddle.
12:26 >> [INAUDIBLE]
12:32 >> Yeah, I'm not gonna get into it right now.
12:34 Maybe we can talk about it Tuesday once we regroup with everybody.
12:37 >> Sorry, Cameron T Robinson, the athletic.
12:39 >> [INAUDIBLE]
12:49 >> No, I think that is a part of it.
12:55 I think we are doing that.
12:56 But I also think when you just look at the overall consistency,
13:02 I think early on, they were playing us in a too high shell.
13:07 They dropped the safeties real deep and put clouds on both sides to take
13:12 that part away and so we kind of recognize that at halftime and realized,
13:16 we gotta be patient enough to run the ball all the way down the field.
13:18 And I think, you have to ask Greg, but their philosophy is probably well,
13:23 they're gonna have patient enough to run the ball all the way down the field and
13:27 take it and take the receivers out of the game, which is sort of what happened.
13:32 But then we also have to check the ball down and
13:35 get to take some of the underneath stuff that Kyle ended up doing a little bit
13:38 in the second half.
13:39 I thought we could have recognized that and done a better job early on, but
13:42 we did in the second half.
13:43 >> Rob Allard, Dispatch.
13:45 >> Sort of similar to what I've been talking about all year, the slow start.
13:48 >> Yeah. >> Have you seen anything that's
13:50 addressed those mistakes early on there?
13:52 Not executing the inning well?
13:54 >> Well, I think we play against good defenses.
13:57 It was good to get right down the field and get that touchdown to G early on.
14:00 That was good.
14:02 But then just a couple of tough drives in there.
14:04 And all it takes is to be off a little bit and then you're punting.
14:07 So, and the run game takes time.
14:11 You have to wear teams down with the run game.
14:13 But we'll look at the film and keep swinging.
14:15 >> [INAUDIBLE] >> Exactly right.
14:17 Yeah, I just, when you get him to the second level, he's dangerous.
14:20 And once he gets out in the open field, those are good to great fast.
14:24 And I think the check down went for 60 some odd yards there.
14:27 And so like we said, he is a mismatch and a very explosive player.
14:32 >> Clay Hall, that's why I asked.
14:34 >> Proctor's play and then Hancock 93 yards.
14:37 >> Huge. >> To the pick six.
14:38 So, it changed the entire complete.
14:40 >> No question.
14:41 No question.
14:42 I think it just goes to show, I mean, the defense have shown that before week
14:45 after week that they're gonna make you work the entire field and hang it in there.
14:49 And so we're gonna have to continue to do that.
14:51 But we don't wanna be putting them in those situations too many times.
14:54 >> But this could have gotten away.
14:55 It was four stops, I think, inside the ten.
14:57 >> Yeah.
14:58 >> They got field a whole time.
14:59 >> Yeah, I know.
15:00 They're doing a great job.
15:01 Give a lot of credit to Greg and their staff.
15:05 They're doing a good job.
15:06 They're bringing in good players.
15:07 And so, but when you're playing on a road and you're playing at this point,
15:13 you gotta find a way to win the game.
15:14 That's it.
15:15 Win.
15:16 And then it was good to see us pull away a little bit down the stretch.
15:19 >> Austin Ward, the podcast.
15:21 When you walk up the field, how would you describe the way you felt about this win?
15:25 Given all the things you described, obviously the injuries, a slow start.
15:28 You don't wanna see some of that stuff.
15:30 >> Sure.
15:31 >> And you look up at the scoreboard and you won by 19 on the road against a team
15:34 that had a long weekend.
15:35 >> Yeah.
15:36 >> What did you think when you walked up to the field?
15:38 >> Well, I feel like this team finds a way.
15:41 They don't panic.
15:42 They keep swinging.
15:45 They keep fighting.
15:48 And we've been in halftime of these games, and we've said we wanna play better
15:53 in the second half this year.
15:54 That was a huge part of our offseason, and you're seeing that.
15:56 And again, I keep saying we could play better in the first half so that we
15:59 don't have to be in these situations.
16:00 But the number one goal is to win games, and we're gonna continue to do that.
16:04 And we have to take care of the ball on offense.
16:06 I thought we had an opportunity in two minutes to kind of work the ball down
16:09 the field there, and I thought Kyle made a nice read.
16:12 It was actually the Will Linebacker who made the play.
16:13 We just gotta get the ball up over that.
16:15 That would've given us an opportunity to get some points.
16:17 But again, I thought we did respond well in the second half.
16:20 So we'll watch the film and keep growing and keep grinding on this thing.
16:23 I mean, you're in the meat of it.
16:24 So every time you go on the road, back-to-back weeks, physical weeks,
16:29 you have to bring it.
16:31 And you're just gonna roll your helmets out there and think you're gonna win a game.
16:34 It doesn't work that way, and I think our guys understand that.
16:37 Nathan, Cleveland.com.
16:38 And finishing.
16:39 You gotta finish, yeah, exactly.
16:40 'Cause you just don't know how these games are gonna go,
16:42 and you gotta be able to respond to whatever comes your way.
16:45 So that's what championship teams do.
16:48 They continue week after week to have the stamina to find a way to win.
16:52 And so, yeah, here we go on to week 10.
16:56 Nathan, how long will your defense have to do this without Lathan and without Denzel?
17:01 I don't have the answer to that.
17:02 I don't have the answer to that.
17:03 And I don't think we know the answer to that.
17:04 So we'll get back and reassess it.
17:06 Everett Merrill, Associated Press.
17:08 Brian, the playoff rankings came out this week.
17:10 How do you guys address it?
17:11 Is this business as usual, now play it?
17:14 Oh, yeah.
17:15 Just kind of move on?
17:16 Yeah, yeah, because our goal is to be the number one team at the end of the year.
17:19 And all it means is it's a good start,
17:23 and we know we're gonna take everybody's best shot.
17:26 And we did again today.
17:27 I thought, again, give Rutgers a lot of credit.
17:30 But, no, that doesn't mean anything to us.
17:33 It's great for the fans, but it just means we're off to a good start
17:35 and beat some good teams to begin with.
17:37 But that means absolutely nothing.
17:39 Pat Murphy, 24/7 Sports.
17:42 [Indiscernible]
17:59 Yeah, and we didn't have Cade today, and that does matter.
18:03 But I've got to give G. Scott and Pat Gerd some credit for stepping in.
18:06 And, you know, Cade has shouldered a lot of, you know,
18:10 snaps here the last couple years.
18:11 And so for those guys to step up and play well, I think they played well.
18:16 At least it seemed like it was good.
18:19 But, yeah, you know, you'd like to see, you know, again,
18:23 early on some better third-down conversions.
18:25 I think we might have been 0 for it in the first half.
18:27 I'm not sure exactly what it was.
18:28 But then we ended up 6-12, so we must have been better in the second half.
18:32 Is that what it was?
18:33 Yeah, yeah, and that was a big part of it because we weren't finishing the drives,
18:35 you know, and third down is such a huge deal.
18:38 And so we did do a better job on third down.
18:40 And that made a difference.
18:41 So situational football is critical.
18:44 But, yes, I think when, you know, for instance, in this game,
18:47 we recognized that they were in a two-high shell.
18:49 They were going to try to take away the outside.
18:50 We had to run the football and be, you know,
18:53 patient enough to work the ball down the field on a couple of those drives.
18:56 And that's what happened.
18:58 But, yeah, to answer your question, you know,
18:59 you're starting to see all that, you know, get on the field together.
19:02 Love to get Cade back so we can really be at full strength.
19:05 Two and done quickly, and then we're going to go to the field.
19:07 Spencer Holbrook, Letterman Row.
19:09 Ryan, how has starting this 11-of-11 season
19:12 been for you guys?
19:14 How much do you think it just drops after the game,
19:17 there and the drive, and a couple of the games dropped?
19:21 And, you know, could you just say, "Let's go do it ourselves"?
19:24 No, you know, we're not used to seeing that.
19:26 You know, we have great receivers and have for the last year
19:29 or last few years.
19:30 And I thought, you know, throw it better, catch it better is what we say.
19:34 You know, we can always look at each other
19:36 and try to figure out a way to get that better.
19:38 And, you know, but, yeah, there was a couple there that if we connect
19:42 on those, certainly it keeps those drives moving,
19:44 and maybe it's a different situation.
19:46 So, again, we'll keep working at it and get it better.
19:49 Joey Kaufman, Plum Village Dispatch.
19:50 Ryan, Kyle was in the section with the underhand a little bit.
19:54 Where he wanted to go with the ball, was he able to do that?
19:57 Yeah, I mean, I had a good picture of it.
19:59 It was a cover two look.
20:00 We're high-low in the corner there, and I felt like the corner was low.
20:03 I think he was going to Marvin, and the wheel was in the window there.
20:06 We just got to put some more air on that.
20:09 You know, the ball came out flat, and I think that's where number one
20:12 got his hands on it and made the interception.
20:14 All right, guys, let's head to the field.
20:16 We'll do some players down there.
20:17 Coach, thank you very much.
20:18 All right, thanks, guys.
20:19 Thanks, Ryan.
20:20 You're welcome.
20:21 No problem.
