Ryan Day Media Availability Previewing Rutgers
Transcript
00:00 >> Ryan, why is injury change anything with Allen?
00:03 [BLANK_AUDIO]
00:05 >> Yeah, he moves up certainly and you have some games here.
00:10 But yeah, certainly moves him up into a much more impactful role, yes.
00:18 >> Joey Kaufman, Columbus Dispatch to the left.
00:20 >> All right, any update with weight loss?
00:22 >> Yeah, I won't have any update on injury here.
00:26 We'll get the availability report out on Saturday.
00:31 >> Spencer, Spencer, Letterman Roper.
00:34 >> [INAUDIBLE]
00:44 >> No, I think that he's got so much football ahead of him.
00:51 He was starting to scratch the surface.
00:53 It started in the spring.
00:54 Really had a great preseason, I mean a great preseason.
00:58 Really impressed.
00:59 And now you're starting to see it on the field.
01:01 So we'll continue to try to build his reps up.
01:06 And I think it's like some of the guys in the past who have been exceptional
01:11 freshmen for us, they played some early on and then when November hit.
01:16 And times we needed them the most, they stepped up in a big way.
01:19 And I think about Garrett, the rivalry game,
01:23 I think the same with Chris, he had that block on him in those two touchdowns.
01:27 And then you think about Marvin and Beckett and the Rose Bowl that one year.
01:31 And Carnell's on that same path.
01:32 So we'll see how it shakes out.
01:35 But he looks like he's ready to roll for November here.
01:37 >> Tim May on three, Letterman Roper.
01:39 >> Yeah, Brad, you go into a game with a, in your mind,
01:44 Marvin has to have so many touches, so many catches.
01:48 And then number two, what is too many for a wide receiver?
01:52 >> I would think if you had asked a receiver,
01:55 they would never say that there's too many.
01:56 I think they always want the ball.
01:57 But no, you always wanna make sure that they're featured in the offense.
02:03 What is that number?
02:05 I think it's different based on what you're seeing defensively,
02:10 what the opponent is doing.
02:12 But that's why we spend so much time game planning,
02:16 trying to figure out how that all shakes out, how the whole piece is put together.
02:20 And then sometimes you may design it a certain way.
02:23 For instance, last week we had several plays designed to go to the tight end.
02:26 It didn't quite turn out that way.
02:27 So, but a lot of plays that we have, we keep personnel in mind.
02:35 >> [INAUDIBLE]
02:45 >> No, zero.
02:50 No, it means we've had a good start.
02:53 But our first goal was to win the first game.
02:56 The next goal is to win the next ten.
02:58 And then we have a few after that.
03:00 So none of those goals have been met other than winning the first game.
03:04 So we got a lot of football ahead of us.
03:06 And we just gotta go to work.
03:09 We'll look up at the end of the year our goals to be the number one team.
03:13 >> Right behind him, Andy Bax from Letterman Road.
03:15 >> [INAUDIBLE]
03:23 >> We test them every day in practice,
03:25 just tested them out there.
03:26 And I guess it's in the 40s.
03:29 We had enough leg for a 56 yarder.
03:31 Just missed it in practice.
03:33 But no, he has the leg.
03:37 And there were two opportunities in the game last week that I really wanted to get.
03:41 That was right around the 34, I think maybe 36.
03:44 We got pushed right out on the sack.
03:47 So we gotta do a better job there.
03:49 But those were opportunities to make it a two score game and
03:51 would have definitely given him an opportunity there.
03:53 And he's gotta be ready this week.
03:55 >> On the right, Bill Landis, the podcaster.
03:57 >> Right, we saw a few of the [INAUDIBLE]
04:01 How much opportunity is there for guys like [INAUDIBLE]
04:09 >> Yeah, for sure.
04:10 And when you have an opportunity, when you flash like that,
04:14 you get more opportunity.
04:15 And then here, I'm gonna put it in the big spot in the second half there and
04:17 it showed up in a big way.
04:18 It made a nice play.
04:20 Forget the down, but it was on a run play.
04:21 It was the second down, and that was a huge play in the game.
04:23 I think it was a little bit of momentum going on right there.
04:26 And he made a nice play.
04:28 So when you do that, you just build trust with your teammates.
04:31 And then you're gonna have more opportunity to improve yourself.
04:33 So everybody has an opportunity every day in practice to prove themselves.
04:38 And then when you get into a game, when you do that,
04:39 you're gonna get more opportunity.
04:40 And that's an example of it.
04:42 >> Jason Barrett, Cleveland South College.
04:43 [BLANK_AUDIO]
04:53 >> Well, I think when you look at that class that came in,
05:07 we had Jordan, we had Denzel, JK Johnson.
05:13 They were highly recruited guys that came in and wanted to play.
05:17 I just felt like at the time, if we were going to bring in a bunch of guys
05:22 that really could create an issue there.
05:25 And but then after this past season, just looked at it and
05:30 felt like the numbers we needed to bring in somebody experienced.
05:33 And those guys really embraced Davidson.
05:35 And you can see he's done a really good job of establishing himself with his work
05:39 ethic and his play, his toughness, and he's producing.
05:43 So the quickest way to get respect around here is to go put it on the field and
05:47 go to work, and he's done that.
05:48 And we take bringing guys in very seriously.
05:54 You don't just walk into this program, you get to play.
05:57 There's a lot of work that's put in on a yearly basis.
06:00 There's a lot that goes on with this team.
06:01 There's a lot of pride with this team.
06:03 But the guys that we bring in, we take a lot of time making sure that they're
06:06 the right fit for the culture of the team.
06:08 And Davidson's been a great fit.
06:10 >> W.A. Reese, Kingston Columbus.
06:12 >> Ryan, your defense and Rutgers defense are as good in the country as anybody at
06:16 stopping explosive plays.
06:19 Does that affect you at all to an offensively playing defense is good at
06:23 stopping those?
06:24 And do explosive plays happen because you plan for them or
06:29 do they just happen by accident?
06:32 >> A little bit of both.
06:33 Yeah, explosive plays, when you think about it on the defensive end,
06:36 it usually means there's been a breakdown in coverage or
06:40 maybe a mistackle on the offensive side of the ball.
06:44 Certainly, there are plays you try to design to create explosives.
06:48 But many of them come up just by good execution and
06:52 make the guys miss out on space.
06:54 So I think about the run that we had, that was the explosive one that made it
06:58 a two score game against Wisconsin, ended up being an explosive run.
07:01 But that was just an inside run play that was well executed.
07:04 So to answer your question, a lot of it is executing things well,
07:10 getting your playmakers the ball in space.
07:12 But then there's times where you gotta design plays to do exactly that.
07:16 And certainly part of that is push the ball down the field in the run game and
07:20 get the ball in the perimeter in the pass game and
07:22 then get the ball in the perimeter in the run game.
07:24 >> Coach, thank you very much.
07:25 >> All right, guys.
