Emergency services are conducting an extensive search for a missing swimmer off Fairy Meadow. Video by Nadine Morton
Transcript
00:00 At about 6.40pm yesterday, an emergency service was called to Fairy Meadow Beach in Wollongong
00:07 in relation to a 28-year-old male who had entered the water and failed to resurface.
00:14 That 28-year-old male is believed to be an international visitor.
00:19 He was wearing black swimmers and goggles at the time he entered the water.
00:24 When we arrived there was a strong rip where that person was, an individual swimming at the time.
00:30 It was travelling about 100 metres, 150 metres offshore.
00:33 It was quite a powerful, strong rip.
00:35 It was moving for quite a considerable amount of time,
00:38 so it would have been difficult and quite frightening to get out of.
00:41 We've been deployed between Trogy Point to our north, right down to Port Kembla.
00:46 So it's been an extensive search area.
00:48 As the time goes on, it does become more difficult for us to have a positive outlook.
00:54 However, there are a number of resources out there giving it our very best opportunity to find support.
01:01 It just highlights the importance that always swim between the red and yellow flags at our patrolled beaches.
01:06 If you don't see life savers or lifeguards at our beaches, no flags generally means no swim, there's no one there.
01:12 We can't see you, we can't save you.
01:14 outside view.
