मुंबईच्या औद्योगिकीकरणामध्ये मोठ्या प्रमाणावर वाढ झाली आणि त्यातून मुंबईमध्ये गरजेपोटी बेस्टच्या सेवेला सुरुवात झाली. सुरुवातीस ट्रामची सेवा होती. औद्योगिकीकरण वाढले आणि गरजेपोटी ट्राम बंद करून बेस्टने बससेवा सुरू करत त्यावरच लक्ष केंद्रित केले. त्यानंतर पुन्हा मुंबईकरांची गरज वाढली आणि मग दुमजली बस मुंबईमध्ये धावू लागली. ट्रामनंतर सुरू झालेल्या बस सेवेला फारसा प्रतिसाद सुरुवातीच्या काळात लाभला नाही; कारण ट्रामचे तिकीट व बसचे यात दुपटीचा फरक होता. त्यामुळे बेस्टच्या वाहक- चालकांनीच हाती फलक घेऊन जाहिराती करण्यास सुरुवात केली. मुंबईकरांना या सेवेचा वेग, प्रवासी क्षमता आदी सारे फायदे लक्षात आले आणि त्यानंतर बेस्ट सेवेने कधीच मागे वळून पाहिले नाही.
मुंबईकरांच्या गरजेनुसार, बससेवेचे रूप बेस्टने बदलले. कधी वाढलेल्या प्रवाशांना सामावून घेण्यासाठी दुमजली बससेवा तर कधी जोडबस, ट्रेलरबस, व्हेन्टिक्युलर बस असे प्रयोगही करून पाहिले. त्यातले काही यशस्वीही झाले. तर काहींना मुंबईच्या रस्ते आणि वाहतुकीच्या मर्यादांना सामोरे जावे लागले. भारत- चीन आणि भारत- पाक युद्धाच्या वेळेस अडचणींवर मात करण्यासाठी बेस्ट कर्मचाऱ्यांनीच पुढाकार घेतला आणि भंगारात गेलेल्या बसेस पुन्हा बाहेर काढून ट्रेलर बस तयार केली कारण त्या वेळेस बसगाड्या मिळणे मुश्कील झाले होते... मुंबईकरांच्या गरजेनुसार झालेले बेस्टच्या बसगाड्यांमधील बदल अनुभवायचे, समजून घ्यायचे तर त्यासाठी आपल्याला बेस्टच्या संग्रहालयाला भेट देण्याशिवाय पर्याय नाही!
