00:00 - Kerry was at the airport coming back from,
00:02 I believe, Mexico, and they caught him
00:04 with a bunch of drugs.
00:05 - Kerry said that evidently he'd gotten in from the airport
00:08 and he was like not himself.
00:10 He was kinda, maybe a little drunk,
00:12 and maybe he had a pill they'd combined or whatever,
00:15 but enough, they wanted to search him.
00:17 - You never wanna get in legal problems.
00:19 You never wanna get caught with something
00:20 you shouldn't have at an airport,
00:21 but especially Kerry Von Erich.
00:23 The Von Erichs were local heroes.
00:25 They were the All-American boys, the Christian athletes.
00:28 The Von Erichs' reputation was such
00:30 that that couldn't happen, right?
00:32 - I don't think I'm breaking any new ground.
00:34 You got young guys making a fortune, a lot of it in cash.
00:38 They're matinee idols, they're movie stars,
00:41 they're rock stars, they're on television,
00:43 they're celebrities in a major city
00:45 in the United States of America.
00:47 People are going to offer them
00:48 and they're going to partake in drugs.
00:50 - There were no repercussions.
00:51 I think the drugs disappeared
00:52 from the police station or something.
00:53 It was a wild story.
00:55 - Everything they did that was good was covered and praised.
00:58 And when things started going wrong,
01:00 they were still getting the same amount of publicity.
01:03 - We knew how Kerry felt, how like he was like,
01:05 "I'm okay, I'm okay."
01:06 But when he was alone, he was suffering, you know?
01:09 - Kerry was a stunner because he had so much,
01:14 he'd put himself in some bad legal positions
01:18 and he was maybe fixed to go to jail
01:20 and he had drugs and things that, you know,
01:23 you wouldn't want out about yourself,
01:25 but he could have, in my opinion, he was still so young.
01:30 He could have got out of that,
01:31 he could have got straightened up.
01:32 If he'd come back in two years, bigger and better than ever,
01:34 probably all would have been forgotten.
01:36 But he couldn't see it at that time.
01:38 I think he's a young guy and thought,
01:39 "Man, I've screwed it up for good."
01:42 - I'm asked all the time, "Why?
01:44 "Why would they do that?"
01:46 Drugs, though I lived it
01:47 and I lived it almost as a family member,
01:51 I don't think anyone could ever say,
01:53 "Why, what happened to Kerry happened."
