00:00 You're crazy to know who I am, aren't you?
00:03 All right, I'll show you.
00:06 - Welcome to Ms. Mojo, and today we're counting down
00:09 our picks for the best movies to ease you
00:11 into scary territory if you're not a horror fan.
00:14 - God, I love you.
00:15 - Number 10, The Menu.
00:18 2022 was a pretty good year for horror.
00:21 One of the funnier movies from that year's offering
00:24 was The Menu.
00:29 - So you're gonna keep doing that?
00:31 - The plot is simple.
00:32 A couple goes to a fancy dinner on a remote island,
00:35 while the guest list is exclusive and rich.
00:37 But things aren't what they seem out on the island,
00:40 and it quickly becomes apparent that the chef,
00:42 played by Ralph Fiennes, has it out for the elite.
00:46 - Ms. Bloom, Lillian, if I may,
00:48 my cherished early advocate,
00:51 knows the damage she has done to so many livelihoods.
00:55 - No, no, no, no, no, hang on, chef.
00:57 The Menu doesn't have too much blood or gore,
01:00 nor does it rely on jump scares.
01:02 It definitely puts you through an intense ride,
01:05 but the satire gives you enough to poke fun at
01:07 along the way.
01:08 - What school did you go to?
01:09 - Brown.
01:11 - Student loans?
01:12 - No.
01:14 - I'm sorry, you're dying.
01:16 - Number nine, Picnic at Hanging Rock.
01:18 - I won't be here much longer.
01:21 - This mystery film comes from filmmaker Peter Weir,
01:24 one of the many filmmakers who called attention
01:26 to the amazing cinema coming out of Australia in the 1970s.
01:30 Picnic at Hanging Rock centers around a group of schoolgirls
01:33 and teachers who go missing during a picnic.
01:36 - Miranda!
01:37 Miranda, don't go out there, come back!
01:41 - The film will surely leave you feeling haunted,
01:44 but without the conventional hallmarks
01:46 of your typical horror movie,
01:47 the frightening aspects of Picnic at Hanging Rock
01:50 all stem from the gorgeous cinematography
01:52 and the mystery surrounding the girls' disappearance.
01:55 - Tell us Emma!
01:56 - Tell us!
01:57 - Why won't you tell us Emma, you know where they are!
02:01 - Tell us Emma, tell us!
02:03 - They're dead!
02:05 - There might not be jump scares,
02:07 but you're bound to feel unsettled.
02:09 Number eight, The Cabin in the Woods.
02:12 We know what you're thinking.
02:13 - Are you even listening to me?
02:15 - This one looks a lot gorier and creepier
02:17 than someone who doesn't like horror
02:18 would care to sit through,
02:20 but The Cabin in the Woods is a lot funnier
02:22 and smarter than you might imagine.
02:24 (speaking in foreign language)
02:28 (children cheering)
02:33 - And if you're a person who thinks
02:34 that horror tropes are silly,
02:36 The Cabin in the Woods is just the movie for you.
02:39 The plot of the movie,
02:40 which centers around college students
02:42 stuck in a spooky cabin,
02:43 deconstructs all the horror tropes
02:46 you love to make fun of.
02:47 - Guess how we're slowing down cognition.
02:49 - I don't know.
02:50 - The hair dye.
02:54 - Don't blah, very artistic.
02:56 - The film is scary, weird, and funny,
02:58 and somehow manages to combine all of those feelings
03:01 into one heck of a good time.
03:03 Number seven, Get Out.
03:05 - Get out.
03:06 - Sorry, man.
03:09 - Okay.
03:09 - Get out!
03:10 - Even if you don't like horror,
03:12 don't let yourself miss out on seeing
03:14 one of the best movies of the 2010s.
03:17 Get Out comes from the twisted mind of Jordan Peele.
03:20 The comedian brings his particular brand of humor
03:22 to the story of a black man going to meet
03:25 his white girlfriend's family for the first time.
03:27 - By the way, I would've voted for Obama
03:30 for a third term if I could.
03:31 Best president in my lifetime, hands down.
03:34 - But he also shows that he has a clear master
03:36 of filmmaking and a real appreciation for horror history.
03:40 Even if you aren't a horror aficionado, however,
03:43 you'll still be able to appreciate the apt mix
03:45 of comedy, thrills, and social commentary.
03:48 - In life, what is your purpose?
03:52 - Right now, it's finding those keys.
03:55 - Number six, Halloween.
03:57 Sometimes you have to get your hangups.
03:59 Even if you aren't a huge horror fan,
04:01 Halloween is one classic you just can't miss.
04:04 - You know, it's Halloween.
04:05 I guess everyone's entitled to one good scare, huh?
04:07 - John Carpenter's 1970s slasher flick
04:10 is one of the most influential films of all time.
04:13 Starring a young Jamie Lee Curtis,
04:15 Halloween follows babysitter Laurie Strode
04:18 as she is terrorized by Michael Myers.
04:20 (sobbing)
04:23 (screaming)
04:30 The film spawned a huge franchise
04:33 and is the genesis for so many horror tropes.
04:36 There is something for everyone
04:37 who is a fan of film in general in Halloween.
04:39 - What about the Jack-o'-lantern?
04:41 - Half of the movie.
04:42 - What about the rest of my comic books?
04:45 - Half of the Jack-o'-lantern.
04:47 - What about the boogeyman?
04:48 - There's no such thing.
04:50 - Number five, Christine.
04:52 Human murderers and killers?
04:54 Please, that's so boring.
04:56 If you're looking for something a little more interesting,
04:58 why not try a killer car on for size?
05:01 - Okay.
05:02 Show me.
05:04 (bell ringing)
05:07 - Christine is about a nerdy kid named Arnie Cunningham
05:11 who purchases a 1958 Plymouth Fury
05:14 that comes named as Christine.
05:16 And Fury is right.
05:17 Christine isn't just an ordinary vehicle.
05:20 She has a mind of her own
05:22 and she's ready to crash into anyone
05:24 who gets between her and Arnie.
05:26 (tires screeching)
05:29 Christine is quite the romp
05:34 with its best performance from the main gal herself.
05:37 It's the type of campy horror extravaganza
05:39 that will leave you grinning when it's done.

05:53 - Number four, The Invisible Man.
05:55 - I told you not to disturb me.
05:58 - In 2020, a remake of H.G. Wells' The Invisible Man
06:02 was released, starring Elizabeth Moss.
06:04 That movie and its commentary on domestic abuse, however,
06:08 might be a little much for some to take.
06:10 - I found something that can prove what I'm experiencing.
06:15 - We recommend going for the 1933 original
06:18 from director James Whale.
06:19 The film stars classic Hollywood actor,
06:22 Claude Rains, in the titular role.
06:24 Dr. Jack Griffin was turned invisible
06:26 by a science experiment gone wrong
06:28 and now uses his ability to play tricks.
06:30 - Good morning, grandfather.
06:32 How do you do?
06:33 - But things take a sinister note
06:35 when those tricks escalate to murder.
06:37 The movie really holds up after all these years,
06:40 particularly its special effects,
06:42 which are just as stunning now
06:44 as they were almost a century ago.
06:46 (dog barking)
06:49 Number three, Evil Dead 2.
06:55 - It is through the recitation of the book's passages
06:58 that this dark spirit is given license
07:00 to possess the living.
07:04 - If you've seen the original Evil Dead,
07:07 you might wonder why its sequel is on this list.
07:09 Well, the second installment in this franchise
07:12 is a little less of a sequel and more of a complete remake,
07:15 but this time with comedy.
07:17 Evil Dead 2 sees Ash return to a cabin in the woods
07:21 with his girlfriend and once again,
07:23 fight off the deadites with more pizzazz,
07:25 humor, and style than before.
07:27 - He was prophesied to have destroyed the evil.
07:30 - Didn't do a very good job.
07:34 - Director Sam Raimi takes the terrifying premise
07:37 of the first movie and turns it
07:38 into a ridiculous horror comedy
07:41 that feels fresh and exhilarating every time you watch it.
07:44 (dramatic music)
07:47 - Groovy.
07:50 - Number two, Misery.
07:52 - I'm your number one fan.
07:53 There is nothing to worry about.
07:56 - You're gonna be just fine.
07:59 I'll take good care of you.
08:03 - Even if you don't like horror,
08:04 you have to give any Stephen King adaptation
08:07 at least an old college try.
08:09 Misery is a scary one, but also one of the very best.
08:13 - You did it, you did it, you did it, you did it,
08:18 you murdered my misery.
08:20 - Annie.
08:21 - More psychological thriller than horror,
08:25 Misery follows an author played by James Caan,
08:28 who ends up under the care of his number one fan,
08:31 Annie Wilkes, after a car accident.
08:33 The movie reflects a lot of King's own anxieties
08:36 about his fan base and the perils of fame,
08:39 all coming together in the terrifying portrayal of Annie.
08:42 - Annie for God's.
08:44 - Shh, darling, trust me.
08:47 - God's sake.
08:48 - It's for the best.
08:49 - Annie, please.
08:50 - Played by Kathy Bates,
08:51 who won an Oscar for her performance,
08:54 Annie is one of the scariest characters
08:56 in recent movie history.
