00:02 - Welcome to Hot Rod Garage.
00:24 This time we've got new tech for old Chevys and new ones.
00:28 We're gonna be putting a brand new fuel system
00:29 from Aeromotive into my 55 Bel Air.
00:32 And this is a blower kit from SLP for that 2010 Camaro.
00:36 And it's gonna take it from 420 horsepower
00:39 all the way to 575 ponies.
00:42 Right now, here's a quick tick from Lincoln Tech.
00:45 - Hi, I'm Corey Donaldson,
00:48 an instructor here at Lincoln Tech.
00:49 Today we're gonna talk to you about how to determine
00:51 whether a car has been refinished or repaired.
00:54 The first thing I wanna look at
00:55 when I'm determining whether a car's been repaired
00:57 or repainted is the difference in color mismatch
00:59 between adjacent panels.
01:01 Although the color may match perfectly,
01:03 you'll see a very definitive hard edge inside that jam
01:07 that tells you that the vehicle's been repainted before.
01:09 Once the tape's removed, it leaves a very distinctive edge.
01:12 You can feel it with your finger.
01:14 Another great way to tell if a car has been in an accident
01:17 and been repaired before
01:18 is to look for a misalignment in body panels.
01:20 Sometimes when they've been hit, they've been repaired,
01:23 the panels aren't gonna line up correctly.
01:25 One of the biggest giveaways
01:27 to the car's been refinished before
01:29 is mismanagement of over spray.
01:30 Take a look underneath the vehicle.
01:32 If a car hasn't been masked off correctly,
01:34 you could find a lot of telltale signs
01:37 like the leaf springs that are painted green here
01:39 or the inner fender wells
01:40 that have got a green paint on it as well.
01:42 - Lincoln Tech can teach you
01:44 how to have a career working with cars.

01:51 - Welcome to the second Roadkill Project Car Update.
01:54 This time around, we're working on my '55 Chevy.
01:57 Now, if you're fans of the Roadkill Show,
01:58 then you probably recognize this car.
02:00 This was nothing more than a body in a VIN number
02:02 that we drug all the way up to Oregon to Jim Meyer Racing
02:05 and slid one of his brand new gasser chassis underneath.
02:07 Basically, we've got a roller here.
02:09 It needs one of everything.
02:10 So today, we're gonna drop an Aeromotive Stealth fuel tank
02:13 in the back of this thing
02:15 and a whole lot of Earl's Plumbing
02:16 to get fuel from there to here.
02:20 Let's go.
02:21 There it is, brand new fuel tank.
02:24 It's powder coated, it's not gonna rust.
02:26 It's a stock style unit,
02:27 so it's gonna bolt right into my car with no mods.
02:30 Best of all, I don't have to weld a sump into this deal.
02:33 Aeromotive's already put a baffling system,
02:36 a fuel pump in there
02:37 that'll support up to a thousand horsepower.
02:39 Really, all I've gotta do is plumb three lines,
02:41 four wires, and this thing's ready to go in the car.
02:44 Your stock tank has got pickup tubes that are too small
02:46 to really support any kind of horsepower,
02:48 which is why this is a pretty cool deal.
02:50 I am just gonna thread on some -8 line
02:53 to the return, to the feed,
02:56 and then a vent line,
02:57 and that's all the plumbing we're gonna have to do
02:59 on this end of the fuel system.
03:02 (upbeat music)
03:04 Aeromotive was kind enough to provide a relay
03:12 to turn on the fuel pump
03:13 and all the connections you need to hook things up,
03:17 but I'm gonna use some of my own here
03:19 and some shrink tube to protect the connection
03:22 and keep any moisture out down the road
03:24 'cause I plan to drive this car.
03:26 Even when it rains.
03:27 (upbeat music)
03:29 All right, couple more zip ties here to secure the wires.
03:41 And this bad boy is ready to go in my car.
03:45 (car engine roaring)
03:48 - It's another Dupli-Color Minute,
03:53 but this time I actually had to go buy this thing
03:55 to save my bacon.
03:56 See, this is our brand new 2012 F-350 Super Duty,
04:01 and we use this truck off camera
04:02 when we wanna give the illusion
04:04 of being somewhat socially acceptable and reliable,
04:07 but then they loan it out to guys like me
04:09 and we destroy the thing.
04:10 I'm gonna fix that with this Dupli-Color Scratch Fix
04:14 all in one kit.
04:15 Thoroughly wipe down the surface
04:16 with a clean, lint-free cloth.
04:18 Handled, T-shirt.
04:19 Rub it down with isopropyl alcohol.
04:22 We're gonna prep it first with this abrasive tip
04:24 so that you don't need to buy any sandpaper.
04:26 Ugh, it's like fingernails on a chalkboard sound.
04:29 The next step is gonna be to put on the white color.
04:32 And by the way, this is a perfect factory color match.
04:34 When you go into the parts store,
04:36 you have to bring your paint code for your vehicle
04:38 and look it up.
04:39 It's right there on the label.
04:40 So this is Ford Oxford White,
04:42 which should be exactly what the factory color is.
04:45 I can go with the paint pen at the tip of this
04:47 that lets me have a really controlled flow,
04:49 or I can go all out with the brush.
04:51 After you put on a coat,
04:52 you have to let it dry for 30 minutes,
04:54 which by the magic of TV,
04:56 we will make seem like roughly one second.
04:59 (upbeat music)
05:01 Bam!
05:02 See, we're back.
05:03 Now I'm gonna go to the final step,
05:04 which is the clear coat.
05:06 You wanna paint it all in one direction.
05:09 It works pretty good.
05:10 It's not completely flawless,
05:11 but it no longer looks like somebody
05:12 went at the back of the truck with a steak knife either.
05:15 And here's one last tip.
05:16 If you're painting your older hot rod,
05:18 consider using a new OE paint,
05:21 because then you can always touch it up with Dupli-Color.
05:23 (upbeat music)
05:26 All right, tank is in.
05:39 We're now ready to start plumbing our way
05:41 to the front of the car.
05:43 Now, every fuel system needs a filter.
05:45 Ours is no different.
05:47 It is fuel injected though,
05:48 so it needs a really fine element
05:51 to keep the dirt out of the injectors.
05:53 This Aeromotive filter's got a 10 micron element
05:55 built into it.
05:56 I'm gonna mount it to the frame rail up here.
05:58 I'm also gonna run our fuel lines to the front of the car.
06:01 That's gonna involve a whole lot of drilling and tapping,
06:03 which is gonna eat up a bunch of time.
06:05 So while I'm doing that,
06:07 why don't you guys rock out with Weird Jeff
06:09 and the Hot Rod Garage Band.
06:11 Hit it.
06:12 (upbeat music)
06:14 (drilling)
06:17 Most of our fuel system will be plumbed
06:31 out of this half inch stainless steel hard line.
06:34 The rest of it though,
06:36 will be out of this soft braided line from Earl's.
06:38 First, wrap tape around the end of it,
06:41 cut it off with a death wheel to the right length,
06:44 put the collet on there, lube the threads,
06:47 then you'll shove the fitting into the collet,
06:49 start threading it by hand,
06:50 thread that deal into there,
06:52 and that is what it should look like when you're all done.
06:55 It's time to hard line the fuel system.
06:57 Got our half inch stainless here,
06:59 and a $20 conduit bender
07:02 that we got at the local hardware store.
07:04 Because I can't think of a better, easier, and cheaper way
07:09 to put a couple of bends in the steel
07:10 to get around the cross members in our chassis.
07:14 (whistling)
07:17 Check it out.
07:18 It's not mandrel bent, but it didn't kink it either.
07:22 That's all that matters.
07:23 Well, our fuel system install is almost done.
07:27 We've run soft line from the tank to the frame rail,
07:30 half inch hard line all the way up to the firewall.
07:33 We terminated that with compression fittings,
07:35 split it with a Y block,
07:37 and now we've got two dash six soft lines
07:40 feeding the front side of our rails going to our injectors.
07:43 That leads to the back end of the rails,
07:45 which split again,
07:46 and go right into our fuel pressure regulator.
07:49 Fuel pressure regulator bypasses the excess fuel
07:51 since it all the way back to the tank,
07:53 keeping everything cool and fuel pressure
07:55 exactly where we want it.
07:57 This piece of dash six line
07:59 represents the end of our journey here.
08:02 This is gonna connect the fuel rail
08:04 to our aero-motive regulator,
08:06 and then all that's left is to wire up a relay
08:07 to turn on the fuel pump.
08:09 And with that, we'll have a fuel system
08:11 that not only will feed this hillborne EFI system
08:14 with an engine that makes 700 horsepower,
08:16 but if we add nitrous to this thing
08:17 and bump it up to a thousand, we're good to go.
08:20 We have plenty of room for that.
08:22 And the best part about this whole deal
08:23 is that we didn't fabricate anything.
08:26 The tank bolted in place.
08:28 All we did was drill and tap some holes in the chassis,
08:30 little wiring, little plumbing, we're done.
08:34 It's just that easy.
08:36 (tires screeching)
08:39 - So this is Hot Rod Garage,
08:41 and pretty much everybody is asking,
08:43 is this the end of Roadkill?
08:44 Yes, we're done with that.
08:47 No? - Really?
08:48 - No, it's not the end of Roadkill.
08:53 No, we're still doing it.
08:54 This is just a extra show
08:55 that we're doing every single month.
08:57 You will still get Roadkill
08:58 on the Motor Trend channel every month,
09:00 until we're tired of it.
09:01 - Nobody watches Roadkill, why do we keep doing it?
09:03 - You didn't know that your mom
09:04 could hit refresh three million times, did you?
09:07 At the end of the last episode, during the credits,
09:09 you saw us zipping around the shop in these little things,
09:12 cutting donuts, wrecking the floor.
09:14 What are those things called?
09:15 - I think they're made by the company
09:15 that makes those Razor scooters.
09:17 - Oh, okay.
09:18 - I don't know what they're called, but they're awesome.
09:19 - I heard 'em called Crazy Karts.
09:20 I don't know if that's a brand name
09:21 or a sort of a generic thing.
09:23 - You won't see them again,
09:24 'cause we got into a lot of trouble
09:25 for ruining the shop floor with those tires.
09:27 - We did, and I nearly busted all my teeth out.
09:30 You can see there's one scene where I'm wearing the GoPro,
09:32 and I hit that concrete pole over there.
09:35 - You can't drive any of my cars.
09:36 - Yeah, I hurt myself enough on the show as it is.
09:38 Oh, people have been asking on the last episode,
09:40 when we did the Gearstar Trans Swap,
09:42 they show you putting the O2 sensor in the exhaust,
09:45 and people are flipping out,
09:47 going, "Why do you need an O2 sensor?
09:48 "Is it got EFI?"
09:49 No, it doesn't.
09:50 - No, it's actually carbureted,
09:52 but it has a fast wideband O2 sensor in it,
09:55 which I've been using to tune the carburetor
09:57 as I drive the car around, so.
09:59 - A lot of people don't realize that.
10:00 The little fast doohickey, or Holley makes one,
10:03 Innovate makes one, Auto Meter has them.
10:06 You read the O2 sensor, it gives you your air/fuel ratio,
10:09 and it really helps carb tuning, so.
10:11 - Yeah, and it does it in real time.
10:12 I mean, you can read spark plugs, you know,
10:15 at wide open throttle when you're drag racing, that's great,
10:17 but when you're just cruising down the road,
10:19 and the thing's running rich or lean, it's hard to tell.
10:21 You know, it sucks just to pull over
10:23 and yank a spark plug out,
10:24 but you look at the display in real time,
10:26 tells you what it's running at, and you can adjust.
10:28 - Somebody needs to make a tool
10:30 that gives you, for carb tuning,
10:31 O2, throttle position, and a vacuum gauge,
10:35 all together, with a readout.
10:38 I've given this suggestion both to Fast and to Holley,
10:41 and they, surprisingly, have not jumped on it,
10:43 but if you had those three bits of information,
10:45 you could become a expert carb tuner.
10:47 - See, why sell you one box with three things
10:50 when you could make them pay for three boxes?
10:52 - Because if they had any of them that would data log,
10:55 that would be good.
10:56 - Some of them data log.
10:58 - Yeah, the Fast one data logs,
11:00 but there's no smoothing of the curve,
11:03 so it just gives you the numbers really fast.
11:05 Do what I want, aftermarket.
11:07 That's the lesson here.
11:09 - I say keep on keeping on,
11:10 'cause you're getting rich selling me three things to buy,
11:12 instead of just one.
11:13 You're smarter than I am.
11:15 - Are we planning on working on the Ratsen on Hot Rod Garage?
11:18 That's the roadkill car that's a 240Z
11:20 that we threw a Chevy 4.3 liter V6
11:22 with a Ford Power Stroke diesel turbo,
11:25 and we went and raced the thing at Good Guy Show.
11:27 - I'd really like to, we have a cage for it.
11:29 I'd like to put the cage in it,
11:30 and I'd like to go do a standing mile event with it,
11:32 'cause what we learned at the autocross was,
11:35 by the time that turbo spools,
11:37 you're ready to brake for the next turn,
11:38 so it's not great on the autocross,
11:40 but we may have allegedly exceeded the speed limit
11:43 on the freeway by a lot.
11:44 - Allegedly.
11:45 - And there's a lot left in that car.
11:47 - It's true.
11:48 - In a wide open event, so Mojave Mile.
11:50 - Mojave Mile.
11:51 What power did that make at the wheel?
11:53 - On pump gas, it made 340 to the tire, I think.
11:56 - 340 to the tire?
11:57 It's good.
11:58 - Yeah.
11:59 - So yeah, maybe we will work on it.
12:00 There's a lot of Roadkill cars
12:01 that'll end up on Hot Rod Garage,
12:02 because we have a segment in every single episode
12:05 called the Roadkill Project Car Update.
12:07 So yeah, you'll see a lot of that garbage.
12:09 - Why is the transmission so expensive in the Elko?
12:12 Billet converter, carbon fiber bands, I mean,
12:16 the honest to God truth about that transmission is,
12:18 there is not a single used or rebuilt part in it.
12:21 They replace everything in those things,
12:23 including the wiring, so.
12:24 - The thing about Gearstar also is, they know us.
12:28 And when you call and go,
12:29 yeah, we've got 420 horsepower, they go, no.
12:32 - That's temporary.
12:33 - That's temporary.
12:34 And so we could have gotten the way cheaper transmission
12:37 from them for that swap that we did in episode one,
12:40 but they did that 'cause they know eventually
12:43 that thing's gonna have either a turbo,
12:44 or a big block, or nitrous, or something.
12:47 - Yeah, my wife wants all of that.
12:48 - Yeah.
12:49 - At the same time.
12:50 - But no paint job.
12:51 - Well, yeah, no, she doesn't want a paint job.
12:53 Not really, she says it,
12:54 but I don't think she really wants it.
12:56 - Women talk in code that way.
12:58 Paint job generally means more horsepower.
13:00 - Yeah, or shoes.
13:01 - Right.
13:01 - So what's the difference
13:02 between Hot Rod Garage and Roadkill?
13:05 Roadkill is our take on if somebody came to you
13:10 and said, here's a few thousand bucks,
13:12 here's three days off of work, go have fun with a car.
13:14 That's Roadkill.
13:15 We're gonna go on an adventure,
13:16 we're gonna do things people tell us they shouldn't do,
13:18 we're gonna challenge ourselves, that's Roadkill.
13:20 - Hurt ourselves.
13:21 - Yeah.
13:22 - Hot Rod Garage is, you know, working on cars.
13:25 In a garage, having fun, that's all it is.
13:27 There's no road trip.
13:29 Honest to God, a lot of the parts that we're using
13:31 were provided by sponsors that pay the bills
13:33 to put this show on.
13:35 And--
13:35 - There's a lot of demand for shows like this.
13:37 Look at 'em, they're all over the cable networks
13:40 and they're all, to my eye, pretty stale.
13:43 So Hot Rod Garage is us trying to have more fun
13:47 with sort of the more predictable show format
13:50 and getting paid to do it, honestly.
13:52 - Well, and we're not gonna reprint the instruction manual,
13:54 so all those parts where we speed up the footage
13:57 and play, you know, punk music is because
14:00 I'm not gonna show you how tab A goes in part B.
14:02 If you buy this, you're gonna go home
14:04 and you're gonna read the instruction manual, so.
14:06 Besides, the episode would be three days long
14:07 'cause that's how long it takes us to put in a transmission.
14:10 - Yeah, I mean, we'll show you the detail you need to know.
14:12 I think one thing we did learn from the first episode
14:14 is that you guys want more of the actual nitty gritty,
14:17 so we can do that.
14:18 - Yeah.
14:19 - Yep, this is us in a lot of cases,
14:21 not with the Roadkill cars,
14:23 but with the rest of the segments,
14:24 trying to do stuff not in the Roadkill fashion.
14:27 You see us hack stuff and zip tie it together
14:29 and booger weld it all the time.
14:31 On Garage--
14:32 - Because we only got three days to do it.
14:33 - Right, and on Garage, we only have three days,
14:36 but we're--
14:37 - We're only doing one thing.
14:38 - Making an attempt to do it more
14:39 like two regular guys would do it.
14:41 We have pros come in every once in a while,
14:43 teach us how to weld and things like that,
14:44 but we're trying to do stuff right.
14:47 At least I am, are you?
14:48 - Depends on how much beer you have.
14:50 - Depends on how much beer you bring and motivate me with.
14:52 (car engine revving)
14:56 We've got a 2010 Camaro that's too slow for me
14:58 and too slow for the chick that owns it.
15:00 So we're gonna install this SLP Stage 5 Supercharger Kit,
15:04 which fits on 2010 to 2014 1LE and SS Camaros
15:08 that have the V8.
15:09 It'll run you 67.95, and it's a lot of money,
15:12 it really is, but the kit is very complete.
15:15 The hoses are all pre-cut, the wires are pre-terminated,
15:17 you really don't have to hack up your car.
15:19 Best of all though, if you've got an automatic,
15:21 you're gonna have 550 horsepower at your disposal,
15:24 and if you've got a manual transmission,
15:26 you're gonna have 575 ponies.
15:28 You can do the install yourself,
15:30 but if you have an ASC certified technician
15:32 from Chevrolet install the kit,
15:34 this is actually warranted for three years or 36,000 miles,
15:37 and the drive train in your Camaro carries
15:40 the same warranty.
15:41 The wiring harness plugs in, the hoses are all pre-cut.
15:44 SLP says this can be done in about eight to 10 hours.
15:47 Unless you're us, then you just wanna double that time
15:50 'cause you're gonna have to factor in the trip to the ER,
15:52 that's probably gonna happen.
15:53 The heart of the system is SLP's TVS 2300 supercharger.
15:57 The guts of this are made by Eaton,
15:59 and it's a four lobe, twisted rotor design
16:01 that's super efficient and is much quieter
16:05 than the old Detroit root style blowers
16:06 that you're used to seeing.
16:07 One of the cooler features of this blower
16:09 are the high flow inlet and outlet ports.
16:11 They're very efficient at bringing air into the blower
16:14 and squeezing it out into the heat exchanger
16:16 that's built into the manifold.
16:17 Now the intake is just as cool as the blower.
16:20 All the mating surfaces are O-ringed,
16:21 just like a factory intake.
16:23 The injectors are installed at the same angle
16:25 as the stock ones, so they're firing right at the backside
16:27 of the valve for maximum efficiency.
16:30 And most importantly, there's a heat exchanger
16:32 built into this.
16:33 That is gonna work in concert
16:36 with this aluminum front mount intercooler.
16:38 Cold air is gonna pass through here,
16:39 cool the water inside of it,
16:41 which is gonna cool the water inside of the heat exchanger.
16:44 The heat exchanger is gonna drop the air temp
16:46 from the blower down to a level
16:47 where you can actually run this system in this car
16:50 on 91 octane crappy California gasoline
16:53 without the engine detonating or pinging.
16:55 You can't throw a bunch of air at an engine
16:57 and expect it to make more power.
16:59 You've gotta have more fuel.
17:00 SLP has taken care of that by speccing out
17:03 a brand new high flow set of injectors
17:05 and this awesome Diablo Sport touchscreen programmer.
17:09 You're gonna use this to drop in a custom tune
17:12 for this thing that is perfect in any gear.
17:14 This thing will not lag, this thing will not bog.
17:17 You can put it in first gear on an on-ramp
17:19 going straight up a hill in San Francisco
17:21 and this thing's not gonna lug and stall on you.
17:23 That's how good the tune is.
17:24 Everything you need to do the install
17:26 is right here in the box,
17:28 minus one hose you've gotta go
17:29 to your Chevy dealer to pick up.
17:31 The best part is, these are not parts
17:33 you're gonna cringe about putting on your car.
17:35 You're getting Gates belts and belt tensioner.
17:37 You're getting awesome wiring
17:39 that you don't have to cut up.
17:40 It's already got weather pack connectors on it.
17:42 The elbows are high flow, roto-molded plastic.
17:45 The blower kit actually comes in four boxes,
17:47 so there's a lot more than what you see right here,
17:49 but it's not that intimidating.
17:51 SLP says you can put this kit together
17:53 in about eight to 10 hours
17:54 and the only specialty tool you're gonna need
17:56 is a little tool to disconnect the hard lines
17:58 from the fuel system and that you can pick up
18:00 at your local auto parts store.
18:02 There's not a lot of modifications to do,
18:03 so we're gonna check out the car now
18:05 and we'll show you just the small things
18:06 you're gonna have to cut and move around
18:08 in the engine compartment to make this thing happen.
18:10 (engine revving)
18:13 (upbeat music)
18:16 This time on the Duplicolor Minute, it is custom wrap.
18:19 This is the vinyl spray-on peel-off coating
18:22 that you can use for all kinds of stuff.
18:24 I've always wanted to turn the Crusher Camaro
18:25 into sort of a 70s street machine,
18:27 so I've done this cheesy van era sort of logo here,
18:31 really poorly executed.
18:32 And so I'm gonna spray through with this
18:34 and see how I can make it look.
18:36 And while that's drying, we're gonna run around
18:38 and see what else this stuff will stick to
18:40 and more importantly, what it will or won't peel off of.
18:43 The Rotson, you've seen it on Roadkill.
18:46 You've been unimpressed by its paint job.
18:48 I've always wondered if the vinyl wrap stuff
18:51 will stick to rust and have it look okay,
18:54 which it probably won't, and peel off.
18:57 Likelihood of it coming off, minimal.
18:59 (upbeat music)
19:02 (laughing)
19:09 (upbeat music)
19:11 I can make this car look a lot better.
19:13 (upbeat music)
19:16 So here's the Rotson with its new racing stripe,
19:24 and now I get to find out if the custom wrap
19:26 is gonna come off of rusty crud,
19:30 or if it's gonna take most of the car with it.
19:32 Okay, well, I'm not gonna call this a complete fail,
19:35 but I am gonna say you're gonna have
19:36 a lot more work cut out for you
19:37 if you wanna custom wrap your complete garbage vehicle
19:41 as I just did.
19:42 And finally, back at the crusher.
19:43 Check it out.
19:44 My lettering was ugly, so it was a nice experiment,
19:47 but that's the cool thing about this coating
19:49 is that you can spray it on, wrap it off,
19:52 take chances, and then not have to go in public
19:54 with your mistake.
19:54 (upbeat music)
19:57 And that's it for this episode's Duplicolor Minute.
20:05 (upbeat music)
20:07 Got a piece in my mouth.
20:12 Best part of the show right here.
20:15 This is the segment where we show you stuff like that.
20:18 Just pure billet machine sexiness, man.
20:22 This is Brian Morland from CP Carrillo,
20:24 and he designs pistons like this for a living.
20:27 So as I understand it, that's a billet,
20:30 and that's a forging.
20:34 Visually, I can't tell the difference,
20:35 so explain it to me.
20:37 - Well, if you look closely,
20:38 you should be able to tell the difference
20:40 because this side over here,
20:42 you can see all the tool marks.
20:43 This one here basically was designed early on.
20:47 There was a tool that was made.
20:49 It was sent over to a forging house.
20:51 It was hit on a press.
20:52 It came in the building,
20:53 and it was already predetermined on the bottom side.
20:56 - So this one gets pressed into a shape
20:58 that's close to the final product.
21:00 - Yeah, and we have roughly 250 different shapes
21:03 that are available to us,
21:05 everything from very, very small bores
21:07 to very, very large,
21:08 and some with domes and some not.
21:10 This one here started off as a cylinder of aluminum,
21:16 and it was a free-form process
21:20 where I could just start with a blank slate
21:22 and come up with anything I decided to do.
21:24 - Okay, so that one, very expensive.
21:26 This one, not so much.
21:28 - Definitely.
21:29 This is one of our sportsman lines, the bullet line,
21:32 so this is more cost-efficient.
21:34 This is custom, custom, custom
21:35 from the very beginning to the very end.
21:38 The majority of the stuff that we do is 2618 aluminum,
21:41 and we do some 4032 stuff
21:44 for street applications as well.
21:46 - And if you're into NHRA drag racing
21:48 and you're into naturally aspirated engines
21:50 and all the technology that goes into them,
21:52 then you've heard of Pro Stock,
21:54 and for comparison,
21:56 Brian brought us a Pro Stock motorcycle piston
21:59 and the car counterpart to that,
22:01 and good God, man, that's a giant bore right there.
22:04 How big is this?
22:05 - This particular one is roughly 4710.
22:10 The range on that bore in that class
22:12 goes from 4680 to 4730.
22:15 Just depends on the combination of stroke
22:17 and bore that the engine builder prefers.
22:20 - And that's huge.
22:21 I mean, if you've got, say, a 540 or 572-inch Chevy at home,
22:25 you've got probably around a four-and-a-half-inch bore.
22:28 That's over 4700.
22:30 I mean, that's massive.
22:31 So these guys, I'm assuming,
22:32 are in order to fit that into a 500-inch package.
22:35 It's a very small stroke.
22:37 They're moving the valve placement.
22:39 All right, well, we've talked about the NHRA pistons,
22:41 Pro Stock specifically,
22:42 and now I wanna know, what else did you bring here?
22:44 What do we got up front here?
22:46 - This particular piston is a NASCAR OpenSpec piston.
22:50 It's also a billet.
22:52 They run such tight clearances
22:53 between the cylinder head and the piston
22:55 that they want it to touch evenly.
22:57 They call it shadowing.
22:59 - Wait, are you talking about the top of the piston
23:02 is touching the cylinder head?
23:03 - Yes.
23:03 - And why do they want it that tight?
23:05 - They're looking for everything they can get.
23:07 They're squeezing everything out of it they possibly can.
23:10 - This is my favorite.
23:11 Tell the folks at home what we have here.
23:14 - This is for Mike Finnegan's 711 twin turbocharged
23:19 Sonny Leonard Hemi Chevrolet.
23:22 - That is a man motor.
23:23 - Yeah.
23:24 - I'm actually afraid of it.
23:25 I've never even seen it yet.
23:26 I've been gathering parts for this.
23:27 I've never seen the thing.
23:28 In fact, that's the first time I've seen this piston.
23:31 - Yeah.
23:32 - It was a good time to have you on the show.
23:33 - It's gonna be interesting.
23:34 Gonna be interesting for sure.
23:35 The safety margin's high on that one.
23:37 - Yeah, yeah.
23:38 Are you gonna go for a ride with me afterwards?
23:39 - Of course.
23:40 - You're nuts.
23:41 All right.
23:42 Well, thank you for coming by
23:42 and thanks for bringing one of my eight pistons.
23:44 Are you gonna hold the other seven for a ransom?
23:47 - No, that's a spare.
23:48 You can hold onto that and put some paper under it.
23:52 - Cool, man.
23:52 All right, well, thank you very much for coming by.
23:54 - All right.
23:55 - We're out of here.
23:56 (car engine roaring)
23:59 - Here's a rundown on a few of the things
24:01 you're gonna have to move around in your Camaro
24:03 to fit this blower.
24:04 Don't worry though, none of these things are permanent.
24:06 You can't undo any of this should you trash your car
24:09 and wanna take the system to another Camaro.
24:11 First off, the heater hoses, the inlet and the outlet,
24:14 run along the passenger side fuel rail here.
24:18 If you've got a 2010 or 2011 Camaro,
24:20 you're gonna have to replace those hoses
24:22 with ones from a 2012 Camaro.
24:24 You're also gonna have to unbolt the EVAP solenoid
24:27 from the lower bolt hole on the passenger side cylinder head
24:29 and you're gonna have to bend the bracket a little bit
24:31 and move it up to make room
24:33 for your new Gates belt tensioner.
24:35 You're gonna be reusing the throttle body,
24:36 so you're gonna unbolt that,
24:37 save the gasket from your old intake manifold
24:40 and that's gonna bolt right onto the new front end
24:41 of the blower.
24:42 (blower blowing)
24:43 So we've got a positive displacement blower
24:44 cramming more air into the engine.
24:46 We've got bigger injectors capable of feeding it more fuel,
24:49 but the computer is not gonna know what to do
24:51 if it doesn't know the engine's under boost or in vacuum.
24:54 So that's where this new two bar map sensor comes in.
24:56 It's bolted right here to the front of the new intake.
24:59 If you've ever tried to suck through a straw
25:01 that's got a kink in it, you know that's no good for flow.
25:03 And that's why SLP provides this new clean air tube.
25:06 It's larger diameter than a stock piece
25:08 and it's gonna connect to either the factory air box
25:11 or you can always buy SLP's Blackwing air box,
25:14 which has a high flow filter
25:16 and a logo that looks just like my mustache.
25:18 And that's a hell of a good reason to buy it, right?
25:21 (upbeat music)
25:24 The last couple of things I'm gonna show you
25:26 will be the items that make
25:27 super anal Camaro lovers cringe.
25:31 'Cause it's about putting holes in your favorite car.
25:35 Over here, you've got the coolant pump for the intercooler
25:39 and bolting that to the frame rail
25:40 requires relocating the AC lines just a little bit
25:43 and drilling and tapping a hole to clamp them down.
25:45 But worse than that, you've gotta drill
25:49 two three inch holes here and here through the valance
25:52 for the lines to connect the pump to the intercooler
25:54 so that you can bolt this bad boy
25:56 right in front of the radiator.
25:59 Well, we've shown you what everything looks like.
26:00 We've told you what it costs.
26:02 Now we're gonna head to the drag strip
26:03 to find out how this car runs
26:05 with 575 horsepower under the hood.
26:08 (upbeat music)
26:10 All right, this is my favorite part of the show right here.
26:14 The install is done and we are ready to track test
26:17 our SLP blown Camaro here at Fontana Raceway.
26:20 (upbeat music)
26:23 Come on baby, let's go.
26:42 All right, the whole shot wasn't great
26:46 and the tire shook in second
26:48 and I smell a little more clutch.
26:49 Okay, all you Camaro guys, buy the SLP kit.
26:54 You probably should go get a new clutch for your car.
26:56 This one's got about 38,000 miles on it
27:00 and it wasn't happy with all the burnouts
27:03 with the drag radials.
27:05 So what does 6,700 bucks worth of blower get you?
27:08 Well, a whole bunch of power at the rear wheels
27:11 and a clutch that is no longer happy.
27:13 We barbecued this thing after three passes.
27:16 It ran mid 12s.
27:18 It'll beat the hell out of a stock Camaro
27:19 and it's got a warranty,
27:21 but it does need to go back to our shop
27:23 to have a little more work done
27:24 if we're gonna drive it anymore.
27:26 (car engine roaring)
27:29 Well, there it is.
27:30 Another episode of Hot Rod Garage
27:32 presented by Lincoln Tech in the can.
27:34 - And remember this car from the opener of the show?
27:36 Looked a whole lot different then
27:38 because during the whole filming of this episode
27:40 of Hot Rod Garage,
27:40 we've been working till like three in the morning
27:43 every single night with a bunch of friends
27:45 to get the Hemi 55 Chevy going,
27:47 but that's not the next episode of Hot Rod Garage.
27:49 It's the next Roadkill.
27:51 Check it out.
27:52 It's Roadkill episode 29
27:53 and you'll also see it in 30
27:55 if we can drive the thing all the way
27:56 to Charlotte, North Carolina.
27:57 - Yeah, we'll give it a shot.
27:59 If nothing else,
28:00 we'll see you next time on Hot Rod Garage.
28:02 (upbeat music)
28:05 (upbeat music)
28:07 (upbeat music)
28:10 (upbeat music)

29:01 - Bam!
