On this episode of Roadkill powered by Dodge
Transcript
00:00 This time on Roadkill, it's a nitrous on my Super B.
00:03 - Yeah, and we're rebuilding the Hemi in blasphemy.
00:06 - Over and over and over again.
00:09 And we're both racing to win at Roadkill Night.
00:11 (engine revving)
00:14 (tires screeching)
00:17 (upbeat music)
00:21 (upbeat music)
00:23 This is gonna be the Freiburger versus Finnegan
00:34 all Hemi showdown.
00:36 That's because we both own cars that are powered
00:39 by the legendary Mopar 426 Hemi.
00:42 But mine is a 484 and his is 535 cubic inches.
00:47 My car is a 1970 Dodge Super B
00:51 that I've owned since I was 15 years old.
00:54 In addition to that all iron Hemi,
00:56 I've got a Gearstar 727 transmission,
00:59 a Gear Vendors Overdrive,
01:01 and 373s in the Dana 60 from Strange out back.
01:05 And the car weighs about 4,000 pounds.
01:07 That means I probably don't stand a chance
01:10 against blasphemy, which is Finnegan's Gasser 55 Chevy
01:15 with that 535 supercharged EFI Hemi.
01:19 It's got an American powertrain T56 in it
01:22 and 430 gears out back.
01:24 And that car only weighs about 3,100 pounds.
01:27 So essentially I stand no chance, right?
01:30 Well, that's what we're here to find out
01:32 because I'm gonna stuff my car with nitrous
01:34 for the first time.
01:35 After we test both of our cars at the track,
01:37 we're gonna be heading to our biggest event,
01:39 Roadkill Nights in Pontiac, Michigan, powered by Dodge.
01:43 This is the deal where we shut down Woodward Avenue
01:46 for street racing and Finnegan and I
01:48 are gonna go heads up.
01:49 (upbeat music)
01:54 So we're here at Milan Dragway,
02:04 ready to do our test shots before Roadkill Nights
02:07 where we're gonna go race each other.
02:08 The 55 with the Hemi in it
02:10 versus the Super V with the Hemi in it.
02:11 Both of us are really stoked on this
02:13 and we actually prepared.
02:14 We've both been working on our cars,
02:16 but we both went to load them on the trailer.
02:18 Mine developed a misfire problem that comes and goes
02:21 and his apparently has a bunch of water in the oil.
02:23 - It's probably puked a head gasket
02:25 and has filled the engine full of water
02:28 and made chocolate milk.
02:30 - And so this has already gone roadkill
02:32 and we haven't even been down the track yet.
02:33 But I think I'm gonna take that bullet.
02:35 I'm gonna go first and find out just how bad my car is
02:38 so we can decide what we're gonna work on first.
02:40 (upbeat music)
02:43 (engine revving)
02:46 11.67 at 117.
03:08 That's not a bad pass for that car.
03:10 My hope today is to get into the tens on nitrous.
03:13 That's never gonna happen naturally aspirated.
03:16 11.67.
03:19 - Yeah, that looks pretty good.
03:20 - Pretty much what's expected.
03:21 - I didn't hear anything.
03:22 - No, it ran fine.
03:24 It's just slow.
03:25 But the problem is the steering wheel's not straight
03:27 and the tack stopped working.
03:28 So I was going off the EFI screen
03:30 and I couldn't see the tack on it.
03:32 So I was just shifting blind.
03:34 So I think I'd like to go one more time
03:36 just to make sure everything's good.
03:37 And then I'm okay going with my nitrous
03:39 or helping you or whatever needs to happen.
03:41 - Nice.
03:42 - All right.
03:43 (engine revving)
03:45 (engine revving)
03:48 - Sounds great.
04:07 (engine revving)
04:10 I believe that's the quickest it's ever gone.
04:14 11.53 at 118.
04:17 This isn't roadkill at all.
04:18 Two passes in a row,
04:19 all the way down the drag strip with no fire.
04:23 Wow.
04:23 (upbeat music)
04:26 So I'm pretty stoked with that.
04:29 That is the quickest this car's ever run
04:30 with this camshaft and rear end combination.
04:33 But the thing is I shift into third just before the lights.
04:36 The car doesn't have enough gear in it.
04:37 It would like to have like a 410 or something
04:39 or maybe even a 456 and it's got a 373.
04:42 But when we put the nitrous on it,
04:44 that's gonna solve that problem.
04:45 And because I'm all excited to do that,
04:47 we're gonna skip starting to work on Finnegan's car.
04:49 We're going straight to the nitrous right now
04:51 'cause we'd be much better off having my car broken
04:54 and his car broken at the same time.
04:56 (upbeat music)
04:58 I had the whole car actually set up for nitrous.
05:02 I've just never run it
05:03 because the car never really ran right before.
05:06 And I was worried about putting nitrous on something
05:08 that had a misfire problem.
05:09 But now I've got that dialed in with the new ignition box.
05:11 So I can finally use the stuff that's been on the car
05:14 for like four years.
05:15 All right, now that we have the nitrous actually functional,
05:19 we're ready to open the bottle for the first time,
05:21 which I'll do with the engine running
05:22 to make sure the nitrous solenoid doesn't leak.
05:24 And then I'll be ready to make a nitrous pass.
05:27 (engine revving)
05:31 All right, Rovo V's first nitrous hit.
05:42 (engine revving)
05:45 Oh, that looks faster.
05:48 Oh, there you go.
05:51 Okay, this is rocking.
05:54 Okay, that was a lot faster.
05:57 12 foot eight to one all the way down the track.
05:59 Perfect.
06:00 You just ran 10.53 at a buck 28.
06:04 Quickest pass ever for the car.
06:06 And I short shifted it.
06:07 It was 12 foot eight to one the whole way down the track.
06:11 Well, I achieved my goals.
06:12 Now the big question is,
06:13 can we actually get Finnegan's car running?
06:15 (upbeat music)
06:20 - There was a moment where I thought,
06:28 ah, we're gonna be all right.
06:29 It was just a plug wire not plugged in,
06:30 but then I drained the oil
06:32 and we've drained out probably eight or nine quarts
06:35 of brownish milkiest looking substance.
06:39 So I'm not convinced we haven't lost a head gasket here.
06:43 So, wanna hear it make noise?
06:47 Oh yeah.
06:48 Okay, on all eight.
06:49 (engine revving)
06:53 What we just saw is a whole bunch of water
07:01 spraying out of the header collector.
07:02 And what that means is there's a bunch of water
07:05 getting into a cylinder somewhere.
07:06 This is bad.
07:09 You wanna pull the plugs
07:10 and see if we can spot water on one of them?
07:12 - Sure.
07:13 - This is agony of defeat.
07:17 Yeah, this day is over.
07:18 So here's the question.
07:20 We still have this drag strip rented
07:21 for an hour and 20 minutes.
07:24 If we start working on this,
07:25 we're gonna blow all of that.
07:26 Should I try and make another pass in my car,
07:28 then we start working on this thing
07:30 once the track is unrented?
07:31 - Yeah, let's go be heroes in your car,
07:34 get some beer and take this apart tonight.
07:37 (engine revving)
07:39 - We got race fuel in it now.
07:40 I put two more degrees of timing in it.
07:42 And on that last pass,
07:43 'cause we were having that difficulty with the controller,
07:45 I had a little bit of a progressive ramp on the nitrous.
07:48 Now I've got none.
07:49 So, should go a little bit quicker.
07:51 (engine revving)
07:55 (tires screeching)
07:58 I am getting pumped up.
08:18 This thing is leaving hard on the nitrous,
08:20 but unfortunately it's also spinning the tires
08:23 and slowing me down.
08:24 I'm gonna go back and mess with
08:25 the progressive nitrous controller
08:27 and try and get that right,
08:28 because I am on the edge of the quickest pass
08:31 this car has ever made.
08:32 (engine revving)
08:36 And it says 10.43 at 130.
08:52 Still going the right direction.
08:55 130 miles an hour.
08:56 First time ever for the Super V going 130.
08:59 Mr. Freiburger's having a good day.
09:00 I am stoked.
09:03 Awesome day for me.
09:04 A lot of firsts.
09:06 Best ET ever at 10.43.
09:08 Fastest mile an hour ever at 130.
09:10 And my first wheel stand, both wheels about like this.
09:14 So I am completely pumped,
09:16 except for the fact that it is looking like, in fact,
09:18 there is a blown head gasket
09:19 or a cracked cylinder wall on Finnegan's car.
09:22 And so what we're gonna do is come back here
09:24 first thing tomorrow morning
09:25 and start sorting through all that.
09:26 We have three days now to get his junk running,
09:29 and I don't think we're gonna run the Super V again
09:31 until that happens or until we realize
09:33 that there's just no hope.
09:35 (metal clanging)
09:40 Well, if there was any doubt yesterday
09:43 as to the problem with Finnegan's Hemi,
09:45 it was removed when we woke up this morning,
09:47 drained the oil out of it,
09:48 and half the engine was full of water.
09:50 So we're gonna tear the whole thing apart right now,
09:52 and we're either gonna find a blown head gasket
09:54 or something far worse than that.
09:57 So ripping it apart starting now.
10:00 You ready for the header to come off?
10:01 - Sure.
10:02 This is one of my favorite parts of the car,
10:04 even if, you know, like you said,
10:07 Ray Charles welded it with his feet.
10:09 - Are you good? - Yeah.
10:16 Channeling my inner Tony Angelo.
10:19 - Yeah.
10:20 This is really bad.
10:21 Check it out, there's water and oil in the intake.
10:25 Not a good sign.
10:27 Lots of coolant in the lifter valley.
10:39 Oh, (beep)
10:46 - What just happened?
10:47 Did you drop something down the engine?
10:49 - I pulled the lifter and the guts of it
10:51 fell out down into the engine.
10:53 - Oh!
10:54 - It made it to the pan.
10:57 - I can't believe we're taking an oil pan off now.
10:59 - 'Cause the wheel is still there.
11:01 How did the, this is what happened.
11:02 I lifted it up, it got about this far,
11:04 and I heard it fall.
11:05 How does it come out as I'm lifting it up and go down?
11:08 - It's a solid lifter.
11:10 Why does it have moving parts?
11:12 Oh, that just added four hours.
11:16 I have never seen anything like that.
11:19 Oh!
11:24 I forgot about that.
11:28 - It's got to stay in the block.
11:29 - Do they now?
11:30 - You think so?
11:31 - Yeah.
11:32 - It's hitting the firewall.
11:34 - I think if we get the gasket to sit back down.
11:38 - So next up, we're going to have to rotate the engine,
11:45 move the piston down and look in that cylinder
11:46 and see if there's a crack in the block.
11:49 There.
11:50 - There it is.
11:52 - Oh no, really?
11:53 - It's on the wall, it's cracked.
11:54 - When you wipe the coolant off,
11:55 it just starts spraying back in.
11:56 - Oh man.
11:58 No doubt, the block is broken.
12:00 Cherry picker?
12:04 - Yep.
12:05 - I think the only chance you have is find a machine shop
12:07 that can put a sleeve in that hole.
12:09 That's extra bad.
12:10 Worst case scenario, just been realized.
12:14 Now we start calling people that know machine shops
12:16 that maybe we can beg, borrow, steal.
12:21 Please get us in today.
12:22 Hey, it's been a good,
12:25 can you call your machine shop buddy?
12:26 See if you can sleeve our block ASAP.
12:29 There's a pin hole in number seven.
12:33 I'll try Steve Atwell.
12:35 This turned out way worse than we thought.
12:41 We do in fact have a hole in that cylinder.
12:43 But the good news is that I called a buddy of mine in town,
12:45 Steve Atwell, and he has a 528 all aluminum short block
12:50 that all of our parts will bolt to.
12:52 Finnegan's gonna buy it from him.
12:54 Meanwhile, I'm working on getting the engine out of the car.
12:57 - You ready?
13:02 - Yeah.
13:03 We almost dropped it.
13:05 We almost dropped the Hemi.
13:08 If we were anywhere else in the world,
13:11 this wouldn't happen.
13:12 - No, that's pure luck.
13:13 - Literally would not happen anywhere else in the world.
13:16 - Everybody watching this show is gonna be like,
13:18 okay, let me get this straight.
13:19 You made one phone call and a buddy sold you
13:22 a aluminum 528 short block.
13:25 Sure.
13:26 - Only in Michigan.
13:26 - I know.
13:27 - Right?
13:28 This doesn't feel real.
13:29 Some alternate universe where all aluminum Hevis
13:32 just come out of nowhere with one phone call.
13:34 I could live in this universe.
13:37 I could be happy here.
13:41 (upbeat music)
13:44 Well, it turns out the drag strip wants to have
13:45 an actual event here in a couple of hours.
13:47 And so it's gonna be really loud and a lot of people and stuff
13:50 so we're gonna push the car instead down
13:51 in front of the concessions area.
13:53 - It's gonna be closer to the tacos and beer.
13:57 It's fine.
13:58 - Okay.
13:58 - That's why car guys don't have to go to the gym.
14:02 - Pushing cars.
14:03 - Pushing cars.
14:04 (upbeat music)
14:07 tada!
14:12 (engine revving)
14:14 (engine revving)
14:19 (upbeat music)
14:22 There we go.
14:36 Tada!
14:41 So this is a bronze bushing from American Powertrain.
14:44 It adapts the rear of the Hemi crankshaft
14:46 to a fortune Camaro pilot bearing.
14:48 And our puller will not pull this out.
14:51 And the old trick is to put grease in there,
14:54 drive a piece of bar stock in,
14:55 the grease hits the back of the bearing and forces it out.
14:58 We don't have any grease.
14:59 I'm gonna try bar soap.
15:00 Irish spring for my peeps.
15:03 We got a socket.
15:05 (upbeat music)
15:09 (hammering)
15:11 Look at that.
15:13 (laughing)
15:17 You know that wouldn't have worked with Dove.
15:19 It's beautiful.
15:22 The day's winding down here.
15:23 They're gonna throw us out of here in two hours.
15:25 We've got this Hemi pretty much stripped.
15:27 So we're gonna get as far as we can,
15:28 taking parts and cleaning them up
15:30 and moving them onto the aluminum block.
15:32 And then first thing in the morning,
15:33 we'll be throwing the new engine in.
15:35 (upbeat music)
15:38 (whooshing)
15:41 Happy morning.
15:44 I am enjoying assembling this thing on a picnic bench
15:46 as much as I'm gonna enjoy watching it go 999
15:49 first thing tomorrow morning.
15:51 Don't you think this is like one of the best times
15:53 we've had in a long time?
15:55 - There's no place I'd rather be.
15:56 The only way this gets any better
15:57 is if I had beer in my hands right now.
15:59 - Yeah.
16:00 You didn't even bring up dancing girls.
16:01 So I know you're having a good time.
16:03 - I think I've retired the dancing girls.
16:05 No one puts together all aluminum Hemis on a picnic bench.
16:08 It's what makes me great right now.
16:11 (upbeat music)
16:14 We got the bottom end all wrapped up
16:25 so we can flip the thing over now.
16:26 We're gonna put the clutch on
16:27 and then we're gonna throw it in the car
16:29 and do all the rest of the items later, right?
16:32 - We're getting close.
16:33 - I know.
16:33 (upbeat music)
16:36 - I now announce you husband and wife.
16:45 - Rut row.
16:49 Do you see what I see?
16:52 Real bad.
16:56 Okay, we just hit a major fail.
16:58 The studs that go through the lifter valley,
17:00 the boss is longer on the aluminum block
17:02 and the stud doesn't stick out
17:03 so we can't get a nut on it.
17:04 Did you notice how high we were and how far we fell?
17:08 - I don't mind not sleeping.
17:10 I don't, but this is, that's big.
17:13 - That stops everything.
17:14 - Yeah.
17:15 (upbeat music)
17:18 - I'm putting in the distributor drive gear
17:21 and realizing, wow, this cam has a whole lot
17:23 of monkey motion in it.
17:24 Realize the roller cam needs a cam button
17:27 that controls fore and aft thrust.
17:29 And this new setup doesn't have one.
17:31 So it's all coming back apart.
17:33 Boy, does that suck.
17:34 - Okay, stop.
17:42 Yes, in.
17:47 - Yep, there we go.
17:50 - Woo.
17:52 - That was a hassle.
17:54 - Look what I got, bolts.
17:57 These are awesome.
17:59 We can now take the heads off,
18:01 except we can't take the heads off
18:03 because we don't have the front motor plate on.
18:05 And the front motor plate's not on
18:07 because we don't have the timing cover on.
18:08 And the timing cover's not on
18:09 'cause we're missing the cam bushing,
18:11 which is still two hours away from getting here.
18:14 So we're gonna put wood under the oil pan,
18:16 get the hoist out of here, take the heads off,
18:18 put the bolts in, put the heads back on.
18:20 Maybe by then we'll have the other pieces we need
18:22 to finish the front of the motor.
18:24 And then, I don't know, spend the rest of the night
18:26 putting it back together, making it run.
18:27 (upbeat music)
18:30 - Dude, this is happening.
18:41 - Yeah.
18:42 - All of the hurdles.
18:43 - Don't, what?
18:45 - All of the hurdles we've had--
18:47 - Quit it. - Have been challenging.
18:49 - Quit it.
18:50 - I didn't say we've overcome them all.
18:51 I just said they were challenging.
18:52 - They were.
18:53 Well, it's daytime now.
18:56 Last time I saw you, it was night
18:59 and we were at the drag strip
18:59 and we were gonna work all night long
19:01 until the track needed to close and told us to move
19:03 and it took us an hour and a half to do that.
19:05 And then we pooped out and we woke up
19:08 at five o'clock this morning and started wrenching again
19:10 and overcame a whole bunch of obstacles like what?
19:14 - Broken bolts, missing bolts,
19:16 bolts that we just didn't have.
19:18 I mean, there were a lot of potential calamities
19:20 that we have overcome today.
19:22 And now we're to the point where we're putting the gas,
19:25 putting the intake, putting the blower on,
19:27 like the fun part.
19:29 - And then we will race it and it will go 999
19:31 and all will be well with the world.
19:33 Boink, that's what you needed.
19:36 Oh man, this feels like we finally accomplished something.
19:40 It's been back and forth and back and forth
19:42 for like 24 hours.
19:44 (grunts)
19:47 Ow, all right, that hurt.
19:49 It's installed though.
19:50 That's all that matters to me right now.
19:53 Oh, that looks much better.
19:55 - It feels better too.
19:56 - This is so three days ago.
19:57 It has been a thrash today and I'm kind of at my wits end.
20:00 I just want this thing to run.
20:02 But it turns out the problem was simple.
20:04 The throttle blades were shut all the way.
20:07 Turns out the adjustment on the idle
20:08 just tweaked itself a little bit
20:11 and kept the thing from running.
20:13 - I know what it is.
20:14 - What?
20:15 - It's not getting any air.
20:16 - Because?
20:18 - Because the throttle blades are shut.
20:21 This will just make it idle really fast
20:22 and then we'll idle it back down
20:23 once we get it figured out.
20:25 - So you're saying this is our moment?
20:28 - Oh, I think we're close to it.
20:29 - I believe not.
20:30 (engine starting)
20:30 (engine revving)
20:33 - The other problem is it's EFI
20:39 so you don't ever like pump the gas to get it started.
20:41 But if the throttle blades are shut completely,
20:43 it won't run.
20:44 (laughing)
20:46 - I would so like to have that feeling of overwhelming joy
20:49 that you know that, yeah!
20:50 - I know, it's running dude.
20:52 Let's put a radiator on it and time it
20:54 and actually run it.
20:55 This is...
20:55 (laughing)
20:58 - Okay, there you have it.
20:59 The junk runs.
21:00 (laughing)
21:01 (rock music)
21:03 (engine revving)
21:08 - You can't be serious.
21:17 - Brake fluid dude.
21:18 - This is a definite because roadkill moment.
21:21 He steps on the clutch,
21:22 clutch isn't disengaging, it won't go in gear.
21:24 - Great.
21:26 - You know how people are thrill seekers?
21:28 We're agony seekers.
21:29 We like to just go on that roller coaster of it runs,
21:32 it won't drive, it's fixed, it's not fast.
21:36 Now it's fast, then it broke.
21:38 - The only possibility is a clutch disc is backwards.
21:43 - So we've gotten the car to try
21:44 and just drive around the parking lot
21:45 and the clutch won't disengage
21:46 and it looks a whole lot like one of the discs
21:48 and the triple disc clutch is installed backwards.
21:51 So we're gonna be pulling the transmission
21:53 out of the car right now.
21:55 Right here?
21:55 - Yeah.
21:56 - That's a bummer.
21:57 - Yeah.
21:59 Could be worse.
22:01 We could be on fire.
22:03 - So the curved side of that spring
22:04 is touching the pressure plate like this, right?
22:06 Not the dig in side?
22:07 - Could be the dig in side.
22:08 - It's backwards.
22:09 - It's like 10 o'clock,
22:13 we pulled the trans out of the car.
22:15 It turns out I installed one
22:16 of the three Mantic clutch discs backwards
22:20 and that was the problem.
22:21 We've fixed the clutch,
22:22 now we're trying to stab the trans back in.
22:25 Sprinklers turned on here, that was great.
22:27 I'm now wet, sweaty, homeless looking
22:30 and about to drive into a rainstorm on slick tires.
22:33 It's gonna be a good night.
22:34 - So that was a thrash,
22:41 but finally we made it to Roadkill Nights, powered by Dodge.
22:45 This event is enormous and super bitchin'.
22:49 Basically we shut down M1 Concourse in Pontiac, Michigan
22:53 and Woodward Avenue right out front.
22:55 We've got drag racing on the street,
22:57 a huge car show and Dodge thrill rides
23:00 where they put people in brand new Vipers and Hellcats
23:03 and take them for the ride of their life,
23:05 sideways with tires smoking.
23:07 Dodge also set up this really cool celebrity showdown
23:10 in brand new SRT Charger and Challenger Hellcats.
23:14 It was gonna be a bunch of hosts from Motor Trend
23:17 and a couple of heroes from the NHRA.
23:20 We had top fuel driver Leah Pritchett
23:22 and funny car driver Matt Hagen.
23:24 In the final it ended up being Tony Angelo versus Matt Hagen
23:28 but it rained out and so those guys were able to split
23:31 Dodge's $10,000 prize that was gonna be awarded
23:34 to their favorite charity.
23:36 Now it's down to me and Finnegan.
23:37 We still have some wrenching to do
23:39 before we can go head to head on Woodward Avenue.
23:42 So last night we're ready to go.
23:43 We fixed the trans, the engine runs.
23:46 Right before we go to take off,
23:47 we decided to check the water level in the radiator
23:49 and this is what we found.
23:52 Milkshake in a radiator.
23:53 How do you even get motor oil in your radiator?
23:55 I've never seen this.
23:57 But that's a problem.
23:59 And my guess is that the head gasket didn't fully seat
24:03 and we need to retorque our cylinder head,
24:05 drop the fluids again and I think it will be fixed
24:08 but even if it's not, I'm still racing.
24:10 - So I'm pretty stoked we're actually gonna race.
24:12 I'm gonna put some spark plugs in this thing
24:14 and heat up a nitrous bottle
24:15 and that's probably just about it.
24:17 I'm good to go.
24:19 - Well, here's what we're thinking.
24:20 The cylinder head on this side
24:21 is not actually sitting flush on the block
24:23 so no amount of torque in the studs
24:25 is gonna compress the gasket and seal it.
24:27 And we had thought maybe we'll just run it
24:30 without water for one pass
24:31 but if there's a gap between the head and the block,
24:35 it could just turn it into a blowtorch
24:37 and burn the block and the head, ruining everything.
24:40 So under normal circumstances,
24:42 Freiburger and I would not even attempt
24:44 to R&R a cylinder head off of this thing right now
24:47 at this event.
24:48 There just isn't time.
24:49 But Dulcich is here, Tony's here, Lucky's here.
24:52 I've never been surrounded by this many qualified wrenches
24:55 so I see no reason why we can't fix this.
24:58 So we're going to.
24:59 (upbeat music)
25:01 (metal clanging)
25:09 - We need a smoking gun.
25:11 - So we think we found the problem.
25:12 Probably the valley studs were not tight enough
25:15 'cause see how the gasket is transferred here and not here?
25:19 And if you look at the gasket itself,
25:21 you can tell that it is embossed
25:23 like all of the passages on one side but not on the other.
25:27 So basically we're gonna have Tony gorilla
25:29 the valley studs and solve it.
25:31 (upbeat music)
25:33 (metal clanging)
25:36 - I need a towel.
25:49 - Yeah, you do.
25:50 That was like the worst injury we've ever had on Roadkill.
25:52 Tony was tightening one of those bolts and it slipped.
25:55 He punched Finnegan with the jack handle right in the eye
25:59 and cut him open.
26:00 But he's taken it well.
26:01 As a matter of fact, he doesn't even want to stop.
26:03 He's still lashing valves while dripping blood
26:05 on his header.
26:06 - Valves are lashed.
26:07 - Unfortunately, we've got responsibilities
26:09 at Roadkill Nights other than wrenching.
26:11 We needed to split and go sign autographs
26:14 for a whole bunch of fans, which is super cool.
26:16 But it meant that we needed to leave Dulcich
26:19 and David Newburn behind to wrap up the blasphemy for us.
26:23 - So there's no water in at all.
26:24 Are we running it without water right now?
26:26 Is that the plan?
26:27 - I think we gotta know.
26:29 - That's what I mean, like put water in
26:30 and then we'll collect it.
26:31 We got water?
26:32 - Dirty hand water, right?
26:34 - Ready?
26:35 You want me to just take out the oil pan drain plug
26:37 so this can go straight to the ground?
26:39 - I hate you.
26:41 (laughing)
26:42 I hate you.
26:43 - Is it the moment of truth?
26:44 - It's gonna work.
26:45 - It's gonna be perfect.
26:46 - You ready?
26:47 - Yes.
26:48 (engine revving)
27:02 - I think we're good to go.
27:03 - It's fixed.
27:03 - It's fixed.
27:04 - Woo!
27:06 - Let's go racing.
27:08 Thank God.
27:11 Here's the list of excuses.
27:12 We just put the motor back together for like the third time.
27:15 I have to race now.
27:16 I have about 100 feet of alley
27:18 that I can use to test my clutch and that's it.
27:21 I'm just going cold.
27:22 - This is roadkill ridiculous.
27:25 (engine revving)
27:29 (engine revving)
27:32 - Well, the clutch works.
27:36 That was the last thing that we needed to know.
27:38 We just changed the oil again, looked at it.
27:40 It looks flawless.
27:41 And he's gonna go break it in
27:43 by driving it around the pits here for like,
27:45 I don't know, 300 yards.
27:46 And then it's gonna be wide open throttle racing.
27:48 - First test was pretty good.
27:49 The clutch works.
27:51 The brakes are mushy now, which is strange.
27:53 And when I tried to use the line lock, it melted.
27:56 So I think the wire for the line lock
27:58 might've got pinched in the bolts
28:00 for the trans-sunnel cover last night
28:01 when we fixed the clutch in the dark.
28:04 - Boy, we're having to work for this.
28:06 - Dude, seriously.
28:07 I have no idea what this wire goes to.
28:09 But it's tagged into the line lock button.
28:13 Let's put the battery on and test the line lock again.
28:15 - Okay, ready?
28:16 - Yeah.
28:17 - Go.
28:17 No.
28:20 - Okay, hold on.
28:21 Nothing.
28:22 - It's not doing anything.
28:23 - Yeah, the line lock is dead.
28:27 Whatever was going into it, grounded out and melted,
28:30 which means whatever this is going to, the fuse is blown.
28:33 - Mm-hmm.
28:34 - Heart's beating.
28:36 Car's not right, but we're racing anyway.
28:40 (upbeat music)
28:44 Man, there's a lot of people here.
28:51 We've been waiting on this for a long time.
28:56 This is Roadkill Nights, biggest event we do every year.
28:59 Last year, we had 33,000 people.
29:04 Gotta be about the same this time.
29:06 Okay.
29:16 This is only what we've been waiting for
29:18 for like a year plus.
29:20 Finally get a chance to run our own cars at our own event.
29:23 (dramatic music)
29:26 Never raced on an organized street like this before
29:41 with like cones and lights and guardrails and McDonald's.
29:44 Right there is a sign that says South Business 24, South 75.
29:48 We're on Woodward Avenue.
29:50 Street racing, I hope.
29:52 (dramatic music)
29:54 Maybe behind the seat.
30:02 Okay, here we go.
30:08 Burnout time.
30:09 (car engine revving)
30:12 Putting on a show.
30:24 All right, good burnout.
30:27 (car engine revving)
30:33 (car engine revving)
30:36 I spun the tires pretty hard.
30:46 He also treed me pretty bad.
30:48 And I lost oil pressure decelerating.
30:51 Okay, I'm not gonna be able to hit it with too much nitrous.
30:53 I think he had a problem.
30:55 (upbeat music)
31:02 Everything okay?
31:04 - I think it's fine, it just goes left.
31:06 - Oh, why'd you lift?
31:07 - 'Cause I was gonna hit the wall.
31:08 - Oh, okay.
31:09 I figured out it's a pro tree, not a sportsman.
31:11 I should probably go now.
31:13 - Well, there's professionals here.
31:14 - I know, yeah, it's embarrassing, isn't it?
31:16 So I guess I'll turn my nitrous bottle on now.
31:19 - Okay.
31:20 - Some just fall off.
31:32 (upbeat music)
31:34 Blower belt fell off.
31:35 - Oh, is it shredded?
31:37 - No, but we thought we had a death rattle
31:40 and it was just the pulley moving.
31:41 - Oh, good.
31:42 - I was sitting there going, "No."
31:43 - Oh, good.
31:45 So is it gonna be handled?
31:47 - Yeah, they're running to go get the wrench right now.
31:50 (car engine revving)
31:53 (upbeat music)
31:56 - It starts for real.
32:20 (car engine revving)
32:23 - Oh, that was interesting.
32:42 He started to pass me and he lifted and then came back.
32:47 Oh, that was pretty good.
32:48 I got so sideways, I had to get out of the nitrous
32:51 for a second.
32:52 - Oh, I had him.
32:53 - Yee-haw!
32:55 Oh, that was fun.
32:58 I'm just glad his car's in one piece.
33:00 That was awesome.
33:02 That was a street race.
33:07 - Wow.
33:08 - That was full on, dude.
33:08 - Wow.
33:09 - How come you lifted?
33:11 - I didn't lift.
33:12 - Oh, really?
33:13 - I missed third and put in fifth.
33:14 - Oh, bummer.
33:15 - You were done, you were done.
33:17 - You were freight training me because, I mean,
33:19 let's just go for the play by play.
33:21 - You treed me.
33:22 - I was so sideways, I had to get off the button
33:24 and back on it and then you drove past me,
33:26 but then you fell on the face and I took the win.
33:28 - You treed me and I was like, uh-oh,
33:29 and then I drove past you, I was like, I got this.
33:32 Fifth gear.
33:32 - Oh, that was so street race.
33:35 I loved it.
33:36 - And it still runs.
33:37 - And they both still run.
33:39 - Still runs.
33:40 - And look at the crowd.
33:41 - That's bigger than last year.
33:42 - And--
33:43 - That's really hot.
33:44 - This is Roadkill Nights.
33:44 We raced our own cars and in a certain way,
33:47 we both won. - We both won.
33:48 - Roadkill won something here.
33:50 Finally.
33:50 - That's a bam.
33:52 I love this episode and not only because I got my car
33:56 to run quicker than ever, but because I had a great time
33:59 rebuilding a Hemi on a picnic bench on Finnegan's 55.
34:03 It felt just like hot rodding in the 60s.
34:06 And then we got to go street racing at our epic event,
34:09 Roadkill Nights in Pontiac, Michigan,
34:11 in front of 40,000 people.
34:14 We went racing and I won.
34:17 That's not really the point, but yes it is.
34:19 I won.
34:20 And that's important because after we wrapped filming,
34:23 Finnegan finally got Blast Me to run in the 940s.
34:27 Will I ever make my car that quick?
34:29 Will we ever go head to head again?
34:31 If we do, you'll see it on a future episode of Roadkill.
34:34 Support companies that support Roadkill.
34:40 Buy your speed parts at jegs.com.
34:43 Oh no, we made a bunch of mistakes over and over again.
34:46 We had to, because it's Roadkill Nights,
34:48 powered by Dodge, with the Hemi on Hemi shootout.
34:52 That was perfect.
34:54 [LAUGHING]
34:57 (whooshing)
